Best tarp I ever had was a two-layer silver/brown tarp from Costco. I still have one. It's 15 years old. The other one was kept outside more often and lasted about ten years before I got rid of it.

That UV test is pretty eye opening, it's amazing that most of the cords were disintegrating after only 9 months. Obviously given the time investment it takes that requires a lot of planning ahead on your part. I've never seen someone put so much effort into testing tools the way you do, so I shouldn't be surprised!

I have a roughly ten year old set of HDX straps, many of which were exposed to sunlight for approximately 6 hours a day in summer to about 4 hours a day in winter, for two years. Yes they faded and stretched but all of them still work and are still in use! Awesome video and more Staci reviews please!

Chem Ph.D. here, nice testing, as usual! We use a lot of EPDM in my job and I must say I'm surprised with the weathering seen on several of the EPDM labeled straps. I suspect the heavily cracked and weathered straps were either another elastomer or a blended one (SBR is half the price). The Amazing straps are the only one that behaved like true EPDM: this material is a common roofing cover, good for decades! In the US we often get "mislabled" products , PYREX of old (now Pyrex) is NOT actually borosilicate glass, and US Synthetic oil isnt :( caveat emptor.

    • @Reziac

As I observe above.... the difference seems to be in how well the rubber is cured/vulcanized, and in my experience only Made In USA rubber is done right. I have made-in-USA rubber bungees that were at full stretch in CA desert sun for 10 years and have neither stretched out nor cracked (I still use them, they are now over 20 years old and still like brand new). Yet none of the made-in-China lasted more than 6 months. I've also seen made-in-USA tires last over 50 years with no cracking (also in the desert, trailer so low miles but all sun exposure all the time) yet Chinese tires are on their way out at 5 years old. Guess which goes on my truck.

I have used rubber straps made by " Radiator Specialty " for at least 35 years and have never been disappointed with their strength and long life. I have used them for securing ladders, staging planks, etc. to cargo truck racks and always double them for security. Great job with everything you test , keep the videos coming!

The UV test was invaluable for me, and this was very timely! I keep losing bungee cords that are outside doing simple things like keeping a PTO shaft in place or keeping the backhoe stabilizers from dropping while it is in storage. They often disintegrate after just a couple of months, and was thinking last week that I need to experiment with different brands. Looks like you've already done it for me, and I just put some Nite Ize on order for those jobs.

As simple as "bungee" and "rubber" straps seem, they are a critical component in many of the tasks the average person performs. I myself go through bundles of straps each year! Sometimes the straps are securing crucial equipment on my motorcycle that I use searching for artifacts, fossils, interesting rocks etc, as a hobby. Using the best options to secure this equipment has just become easier. Thanks!!!

True story, my great uncle was using a black rubber bungee for moving. He straddled it to give it some extra pull, and the hook let go. It ripped right through his jeans, nut sack, and all. This was back in the day, so his mom sowed his nut sack closes on their dinner table after stuffing it all back in. He ended up having 6 kids in life. I wanna say he was around 17 or so when this happened. I never asked to see the scare, but I can't even imagine the pain. So I heard Todd say about not taking one on the chin I wince in pain.

I use bungees a lot around the house, but two specific outside uses are 1. to keep my trash can in place if it is windy and 2. to keep my fence gate open when I am bringing stuff in and out of my back yard. #1 faces mostly afternoon sun. #2 faces mostly morning and some afternoon sun, so the majority of the sun in a day. I have to replace bungee #1 every 4 months or so, as it breaks easily after a while as the elastic deteriorates. Bungee #2 is on season two now (including winters) and I may have to replace it next spring. I just went out to check where I got them (I pick them up when needed, or when I 'feel' I need more bungees)... Bungee #1 is from Harbor Freight (Hyper-Tough). Bungee #2 is HDX from Home Depot. So Todd, like your test today, my 'real life' experience is that the HDX lasts longer.

I've been using the Husky EPDM straps for at least a decade now. I primarily use them to strap down lumber being hauled on my short bed truck with the tail gate down. They stretch out perfectly to hold 2x4's, plywood, and more down securely without any sliding around. I do not leave them exposed to UV for more than a day or so at most. I also replace all my bungie cords every 2-3 years as I'm fearful of one rotting just enough to snap while pulling them tight and catching one in the head or worse. Awesome video!

I am glad you did this test for 2 reasons:
    1. I never planned on the straps lasting more than one trip, know I know that I was right for the most part.
    2. I do not have a chain hoist however I do have a lot of chain come a longs. Mostly Beebe, but some others as well with chain lengths from 3' to 25'. On occasion I tarp loads and use a lot rope and bungee straps. Generally bungee straps are ether too long to work well or too short to reach a tie point. I never thought of hooking up a chain come a long to a bungee to stretch it into place. Thanks for the tip.

That takes me back. About 20 years ago, I was helping my grandfather cover his boat for the winter, and we were going to attach the cover using bungee cords. He bought 2 boxes of the Harbor Freight plain black bungee cords for the job. We winterized the boat and pulled the cover over. After about 10 minutes of pulling the cover over and positioning it just right we opened the boxes of bungee cords. We untangle them and start putting them on. The first one gets hooked on and I start pulling...POP! The bungee cord breaks at about 1 inch of stretch. "What the hell", I mutter to myself so grandpa can't hear me and toss it aside. I grab another and start stretching and POP! it breaks too. We start pulling on all the cords and they all break around 1 inch of stretch. We laughed for a few minutes and then went in to town to buy more from a different brand. Someone must've forgotten one of the 12 herbs and spices in the factory in china where they were made.
    Good times.
