Excellent video! Something that the internet cant seem to find a decent version of is spray bottles! They all seem to have some weakness, whether it be to soaps, alcohols, oils, or even mild solvents, and the trigger jams up, etc. I think it would make for a fantastic video for those of us who use spray bottles in the shop! (possibly even compare some of the bottles from existing products like windex/bleach/etc)

I will nominate Solo's excellent 1L (418) and 2L (418-2L) hand-pumped spray bottles w/the round reservoir: excellent adjustability; quick pump action; outstanding durability - and 100% rebuildable. Cheap enough you can own one for each type of chemical use, plus always one for water.

I'd like to see a tolerances video on sockets and ratchets. Like what precision they are machined to. I find that most stuff is strong enough fore,.but if it isn't machined well it strips bolt heads.

@@josephroach9793 That'd be a neat video. Den of Tools has one on wrenches from different brands. From that video, you only have to really worry about the cheapest of the cheap. My Crescent brand combo wrenches are comparable to the newer Taiwan brand Craftman ones.

@@justsomeguy5470 he probably makes 6gs from the videos, so he probably gives away the extra tools to friends or family and returns others he doesn't want to keep. Also, if I were him, then I'd buy warranty on the tools and take them in for warranty replacement. You'll have a brand new tool after that.

I ended up buying some "Rocket socket" look-a-likes based on your original recommendations.
Those types of sockets are so good at removing rounded nuts.
I'm honestly amazed at the level of torque they can hold without losing grip. It's honestly one of the best tools to have when working on old rusty cars :D

yea but they quickly loose their edge, and you cant always heat up the broken stud (too close to oil seals, 0 rings, gaskets etc). atleast for the salty outboards i work on. but agree... they are very good. have piles of em'

I don't know about painters caulking but I do know if it has to be waterproof then I always use 3M below the waterline sealant. It ain't cheap but it don't leak. Silicone kinda sucks in my experience with it.
@@1pcfred I think the "below the waterline" is an adhesive.. Silicone is a great product but it's messy and it doesn't take a paint..
@@ProjectFarm Painters caulk would be interesting.. If you do it,, I might suggest that you try clear, white and colors.. The clear turns brown more than colors and I've read that if you use your finger to spread it, the oils from your skin cause bacteria which molds faster... I have no idea what the truth is but you always find out for us.. THANKS for all you hard (FUN) work...

Those locking vice grips from Irwin are awesome for removing stuck brake lines, power steering hoses and a/c fittings that nothing else can grab and are in a class of their own in my opinion. I have a old set from about 30 years ago that has saved my bacon countless times so I am thrilled to see they are making them again.

I like to use a small pipe wrench for that.
Back in my country I've been using a tool of my own design(kinda like that duratech, but very aggressive and strong) that was able to grip to completely round things and maintain a very strong hold, it's sad I can't make a new one here(cuz I don't have access to factory machinery).
Vice grips for damaged nuts/bolts, I don’t care if it chews them up, I can always replace them. But if I can’t undo them … !
@@CrimeVid Vice grips are no match to a pipe wrench though. A pipe wrench will either chew the nut into nothing, or open it. Vice grips will only round the nut as they don't provide proportional gripping force to the turning force.
Those are probably American made.
Great testing again Todd. Like some others I have had set of Metrinch wrenches and sockets for over 25years. I have picked up a set of Knipex Pliers Wrench and have found it does a much better job than any adjustable wrenches that I have found. Would be good to keep in mind if you do a similar test again. Keep up the great work.

I’m so glad you tested that Swedish pipe wrench, that thing saved my life when other bolt extractors didn’t work. And as a matter of fact, it not only grabbed a completely rounded bolt but got enough torque to snap it (which still worked out for me).

I wrench for a living and that exact tool is my Get Out of Jail Free card. Siezed tie-rods. Easy. Rounded bleeder valves. No sweat. Basically anything rounded to oblivion. This tool will move it around. And HF sold it to me for 11 bucks. The thing rocks.

They are very similar to a stillson wrench. Which is my go to on rounded bolts.

One thing I would've liked to see with the extractor wrench sets is to see if a smaller wrench could get a grip on the rounded bolt if it is too small.
Yep, was going to comment the same, it's worked for me before with helical sockets on heads that were too rounded off and or rusted away, it also helps to have both an SAE and Metric set to have a better spread of sizes. You have to hammer them on, but if you can get one to go on they'll usually have the bite. You'll have a hard time getting the bolt out afterwards though without a vise. But it was nice to see some wrench type tools tested, there isn't always room to hammer a socket on, but when there is, that's my go to, those helical sockets work great. Pipe wrenches usually do well too, but often times those are too big/bulky to get in there as well.
The vise grip ones are game changers for when you need a line/flare nut wrench. Nothing beats them...I have the full set of 3 sizes and although I don't use them often, they are irreplaceable on tough fittings where you need an open end.

Came in a set I bought from Mac years ago. Only use the needle nose vise grip one more. Great on any round stock also.
So your pipe wrenches dont have an open end? I cant see why you need the locking feature for that, and when you dont need locking a pipe wrench is the tool to use.
@@pflaffik Just stripped a few 14m bolt heads on wife’s Jeep. Had to cut slide pins to remove whole caliber. Ended up locking in vise, heat, and large pipe wrench to break free. They end up being the end game loads of time but are harder to get in places. How sharpe the teeth matter also. I had 2 grind 2 flats spots on one as to get better purchase. If I had to do all over I would of just ordered 4 new calibers from Amazon.

Would be neat to see a box fan comparison. I've been through a few of em and I think there's a lot of variability in that market that would make some stand out more than others. Brands like Hurricane and Lasko would be cool to see em go at it in a CFM, decibel, air speed, and wattage test!

My Vise-Grip Locking wrench saved my butt one weekend working on a brake caliper with a severely frozen pin. It was the one tool I could get it to even budge, but eventually got it out and continued with the rebuild with having to buy a whole new caliper!

If you ever do this again it would be interesting to see how Knipex parallel jaw pliers would have fared. I have a 12" version and it's one of my favorite and most useful tools of its type. Also, while much more of a 1-trick-pony is the "LICHAMP 23-IN-1 Adjustable Universal Wrench", which I've used to remove some truly stuck nuts.

When an oil filter is stuck on real good hammer a big screwdriver through it. Then you'll be really motivated to remove it.

I've had a good experience with the Oemtools 25101 3-jaw oil filter wrench where others failed. I was too chicken to try the screwdriver through the filter method.

Absolutely love your very professional approach to testing tools in real world scenarios. I've made more than one purchase based on your channel, as is the case this time. I rebuild and restore cars and trucks from the late 19s to the mid-eighties and these tools are a must have on these projects.
A small critique, if you will. I'm a retired broadcaster and we use the "um" test, simply counting the number of pauses (ums) in a timed period. I might suggest that you apply this to "and". Super video as always and please keep 'em coming. Cheers!

I currently own a set of Metrinch tools. I have had them for over 25 years. I LOVE those tools. Not overly fond of the open end on the wrenches, but they have their moments. The sockets and ratchet have been my go-to since new. They have been abused like it was my mission in life and have held up better than any brand I’ve owned. I ride Japanese motorcycle and grew up driving GM cars, so I needed both metric and standard, so metrinch made sense and never let me down. I would HIGHLY recommend.

I don't think these Vise Grips were made in USA. Yeah no Irwin are Rice Grips. When is says. "The Original" it ain't. I'm not sure if Peterson ever made parrot beak pliers. I have them in American Tool. Which was the first outfit that bought the company.

@@waterloo123100 yeah the old Peterson factory shut down last year. It was being run by Malco and they made Eagle Grips there. A pair cost over $50. Todd tested them and they were the best but not enough were willing to pay that much.

Another great set of tests! When it comes to removing damaged fasteners, I don’t mind a bit of damage as long as the bolt can be removed and replaced. Making things worse and *not* removing the bolt is worst case!

If space is no issue, my favorite is a giant pair of vice grips with sharp teeth and a crazy oversized tightening screw that acts as long handle. In the past I used a pipe for more leverage, but with the giant long thumb screw it's a complete (although crazy looking) tool.

I've made high end tools and when you buy one you're also buying the other 9 that got scrapped during manufacturing too. So that's why the best tools cost ten times as much.

@@dogbreath6974 why not? Maybe you think we only made one thing? That was not the case. Every different part needs to be setup and checked. Our flagship product had dozens of parts with each requiring dozens of machining operations. That's a lot of latitude for mistakes to be made. But when it happens we just scrap the part and keep going. That's the job.

I imagine a regular pair of vise-grips would have out-performed all of those wrenches at a much lower price. A vintage Petersen Vice Grip would probably outperform the "new" one but there are some other tool manufacturers who make locking pliers that might be better than the current "vice grip"

It would be awesome to see coolers. Best temp holding, best sealed from outside dirt and grime. Over all durability from being slid around asphalt and gravel or dropped out of a truck bed. Is yeti worth the money? arctic? Ozark trail? Igloo? Metal style Colmans that seem to be making an comeback? There are channels that do this already, but I really want the Project Farm version!
I sometimes use a small pipe wrench similar to the magic wrench for rounded nuts/bolts. I believe if you have flipped the wrench over, it would have clamped on better. Thank you as always for all your hard work. ~ Chuck

Amazing video with a lot of high quality work and testing!! However, I’m just curious when testing the wrench at 7:20 would it have been at all possible to use a size smaller and tap it onto the bolt or was that not an option?
Going into the store to buy a set of these tools is like going into the store and buying a toilet plunger. Everyone knows you're having a really bad day and you really, really want this tool to work. I had my bad day 3 days ago. After rounding a 10mm bolt while taking apart my turbo, I watched this shootout and went for the MichaelPro wrenches. The 10MM closed end wrench made short work of that rounded bolt. 30 seconds and my day got a lot better. Thanks to Project Farm for giving me the info to help me not waste my time and money!

That stanley locking adjustable wrench is great. I never even thought about using it on damaged bolts being that it’s an adjustable wrench, but I love it.
I’ve had it for probably 10 years now and it’s one of my go-to tools for field work

He installed the bolt and then ground the edges off.
My grandfather bought me a full Metrinch socket and wrench set for my birthday more than 2 decades ago. They were made in Russia back then even though it's the same design. I still use the set nearly every week if not every day. For all round use and having a full set with only a few pieces you can take anywhere that you also don't have to guess metric or SAE I still believe it's the best set you can find. Though I like the socket set much better than the wrenches which do have clearance issues sometimes. Great video, thanks!

It would be great to have a showdown between the Japanese Vampliers (or Engineer) screw extractors and other premium brand pliers like Knipex.
Also, another idea could be to compare different food grade vacuum sealers and vacuum chambers. You can include water displacement method!

I liked the idea of the DuraTech and actually bought an identical “Husky” branded wrench from Home Depot; I don’t think I’ve used it effectively a single time as like the other Husky adjustable wrenches I’ve used the adjustment just keeps opening up while you’re using it causing you to constantly have to re-tighten the wrenches every time you change positions. In a pinch it’s hard to beat a simple pair of Vise-Grips as they can looses and tighten things, and you can always replace a bolt/nut after words when you have access to better tools.
Love the videos as views are actually independent and as scientific as they need to be; this isn’t very common on UA-cam were most other content providers are just about selling product or just can’t be honest as products are either cherry picked and/or provided for free.

So I have a question. On the wrenches that 'there wasn't enough surface area on the rounded bolt' did you try going down a size to see if they would do anything? I'd be curious to see if that would make a difference.
Seems like kinda an oversight, obviously the bolt is no longer the same size it came in
I'm curious how the Knipex pliers wrench and cobra pliers would do, although I suspect that'd be partially depended on which size you get.

I just bought two off market ignition coils for smaller dirt bikes that came in as duds, next one I got was a dud too and that was from a different vendor. Then I went to get another which was good, and thought "I'd love to buy a bunch of these and do reviews of what to buy and what to keep away from."

30 years of rust belt auto tech experience mirrors your tests almost exactly. Sometimes, welding a new nut on top of whats left, or a sacrficial socket welded to whats left, (think locking lug nut) is what works best. Yard sales are good for those. Great vid !
