Hi again Matt, I got one of those from fleabay, and also at the same time got the adaptor that fits the el cheapo cans, so you have a proper screw thread to fit the can to your stove. Obviously only useful for stoves that have a flexible stove to bottle connection. Tried both and they work well, much cheaper as you have said. I think I paid £3 for both from fleabay. Hope the move goes well and isn't too stressful. ATB Dave
Hi, we’ve been away so great to catch up on some videos! Great video as always, useful stuff and ideas😀👍👍👍
Cant believe you guys have been away somewhere that is soooooo unlike you LOL 😀👍
Great video .. can you tell me what adapter I need to transfer gas from the cheap canister to the Coleman 1lb canister number M1110
Well look forward to seeing your next fishing video as iv watched them all great watch seem like a great bunch of guys and know how to mix fishing with fun 10/10 for me hope your move goes well
Love watching your fishing vids great watch spot on as an angler!! Tight lines
Thank you very much Mike nice of you to say that, I need to get out on the bank but my moving home will prevent that for a few weeks, it will probably be well into November before i get a chance, thanks again Mike tight lines regards Matt 👍
Belting tip cheers maff, especially useful in summer for me as I use spirits or petrol in winter, top stuff 👍🏻
Me too Phil, but i get great pleasure refilling one of those canisters, I feel like i beat the system in a small way LOL
Many thanks for this! Here in the US it costs about $3.50 for that adapter. But worth it. :)
Top tip from Gordon :- If you put the one you what to fill into the freezer for 30 minutes, then warm up the new one in water for a few minutes it will completely empty. GORDON Nice tip and thanks :-)
good video for research thank you for posting it
If you over fill the cartridge it wont explode but the concave bottom will push out, thats why all pressured cans have that shaped bottom.
A very comprehensive guide.
What was the model of the larger Coleman cannister?
You mentioned the smaller was a C250, but didn't say on the other.
Thanks for uploading!
Very useful and even more a great way to safe cash.
Thanks a lot and good luck with the move.
Thanks very much 👍 We should get a moving date any time now one more signature from the buyers and away we go
you just made me laugh fella, better say to the missus you found your old one during the move hahaha
Well i'm in the crap now LOL I've kicked the arse right out of it this year but im looking forward to testing all this gear.... if i'm ever allowed out of the house to use it 👍
Hi Maff. Something for you to think on, but the pressure inside a gas canister that contains both a liquid and a gas depends on not how full it is, but on the type of gas, and it’s temperature. That is because every gas has its own saturated vapour pressure. So two butane canisters will be at the same pressure, irrespective of how much fuel they contain, providing they are at equal temperatures and some liquid still remains. What you are probably doing, without realising it, is connecting a gas bottle that is warmer, to one that is cooler. Or perhaps one has a slightly different gas mixture to the other. Propane, for example, has a higher vapour pressure than butane.
The other thing you will notice, is as one canister empties, it’s temperature starts to rapidly fall. That is because, the liquid is evaporating inside the canister. This is called the joule Thompson effect.
Overall, what you are doing will still work, providing you keep the filling canister warmer.
Oh, and the reason why you should never completely fill a canister is because liquid is basically incompressible. So if the temperature in the gas canister goes up and it’s full of liquid, the pressure can quickly increase to beyond the design pressure of the canister.
I don’t want to sound a smart arse, but I am a chemical engineer!
Not a smart arse when it’s all facts 👍
I pop the empty canister in the freezer for 5 minutes and the one I’m filling it from inside my jacket. Then bring them outside and start filling, checking regularly with a digital scales until I have about 90% of the original labelled gas capacity in the canister I’m filling.
*DrCarp*
Obliged for the technical explanation, which I'll try memorise, as there *is* always some smartarse that demands you prove the claim!
It'll be nice to be able to hit such a person with scientific facts.
😂😂😂
Very interesting mate its something I've never done.
I only use gas carping or camping in the summer but i get great pleasure in saving a few pounds now and then, thanks bud for the comment regards Matt 👍
Nice tips on saving a few dollars on those fuel canisters......Take care, Bluefin.
Can you advise me on how to put my Gas Can into the backpack?
Matt .. I’m here everyday checking for the latest video 😂😂 I feel like Iv watched them all 4/5 times .. I’ve tried watching other people but they just don’t compare.. hurry up hammocking .. hope your well
Cheers Myles was supposed to be out and about this weekend but work took over and put pay to that, we have now moved and currently in total chaos trying to fit all our gear....oops!....... i mean all my gear into our down sized bungalow :-) wont be long now and big thanks for the support mate, kind regards Matt
The canisters are a mix of propane and butane. If you’re filling it with just butane does rhat work ok? Does the mix concentration matter?
Propane and butane have different weights, I believe the Coleman canisters are 30/70 split of propane and butane, the CP250 carriages used to fill in this vid are only butane I think. If you take Calor bottles, the smaller ones are 3.9 kgs for propane and 4.5 kgs for butane. As mentioned by someone else, probably easier and more versatile to get the cartridge adaptor.
Pure butane performs better in warmer weather and gives off more energy/heat, whereas the mix, usually 80% butane/20% propane, performs better in colder temperatures and boils at - 6°C/21.2°F because it stays in the gas phase at lower temperatures.
Great info ,I refill to
When you think how much money these companies are making per tin of gas I somehow dont feel guilty at all :-) in fact puts a nice smile on my face for every refill 😀👍
Have you a link for the adapter or the name of it please
Can you tell me what adapter I need thanks and very helpful
Look on EBAY for "Gas Refill Adapter Camping Stove Cylinder Filling Butane Canister" that will do the trick dave and take you straight to them, regards Matt
Refill your vintage cider bottle😁.
Remember those blue French canisters? They had to be punctured and screwed on, sort of. Saw loads of them flying in my regular campsite times😨
They made good entertainment as we played gas canister roulette in the fire 👍 I wish i could find a vintage cider adapter to refilll my bottles for a fraction of the cost, now that would be amazing 😉

I heard of some bright spark, back in the day, who used asbestos sheets as a windbreak and one of the sheets exploded, sending shards all round the camp.
That, when I heard the story, seemed all too plausible, unlike the horrific injuries suffered by everyone, from in-and-out wounds to pierced eyeballs, etc.
Some folk over-egg a good story. 😂
Great video. Do you put it in the freezer first before transfer ?
I can only suggest you read boyles law.
If you fill it at a low altitide, and take it to a higher altitude the gas in the cylinder will expand.
Conversly if you fill at high altitude, and bring it down to lower altitude there will be less gas.
For every 10 meters of altitude or depth the gas will either increase by 1/3 attmospheres or decrease by the sa.e amount.
Be carefull it can be dangerious doing tbat.
I don't generally use gas stoves because of the noise they make, but this is a great tip! Thank you.

I had the great good fortune to observe badger and fox parents keeping a watchful eye, as their young wrestled with each other, as twilight settled in.
I'd get there early enough and settle in to watch the show, before moving on at it's conclusion.

I know my question is unusual but does the valve/adapter go both ways?
It just happens I have more than a dozen of the expensive one but I regularly use the cheaper one for my portable heater, and would like to transfer the gas the other way around.
I will answer this tonight when i get home and try but i'm going to say yes for now as i dont see why it would not work
Well the answer is yes with a BUT! if it wasn't for the fact of having a load of the expensive ones in abundance you simply would not do that as you would just buy more cheap ones however in your case, go for it. TOP TIP put the can to be filled in the freezer for a short period to lower the pressure for the refill and keep the one to be emptied at room temp make sure the one to be filled is on the bottom. regards Matt
@@MaffTUK Much obliged Matt. Indeed money-wise it makes no sense but to anyone who's reading this I should again stress I got those screw-valve ones for free. An old time friend dumped them on me but the only propane device I have is a portable gas heater, which requires the cheaper type of canister, hence the question. My plan is to keep a couple empty cheaper canisters and refill each of them a few times before disposal. I do not think it is safe to refill the same canister over and over but just a few times of partial refill, say 80%, should be good enough.
@@mtssman
Good point, Tommy!
The cheaper cannisters are liable to leak or even burst at the seam, much sooner, over time.
I have a question. If i used the canister and then its getting empty. . Cam i refill it agaim and use ir again?
Night it is
Why does it weight more then the off the shelf weight when I weight it? So how do I determine when it’s full?
If you have bought it , never used it and it weighs more than the weight stated its because they are not including the gross weight of the container just telling you the gas weight , this is why it is higher,
to ensure you never overfill the canister write the overall gross weight on the underside of the canister from new and use that overall weight to as a guide to avoid overfilling in future, hope that helps, regards Matt
If you keep refilling the same cylinder, it will eventually get water condensing inside, which can rust the cylinder from the inside. There have been cases of the cylinder then exploding in use. Obviously not a good situation when you’re on your own up a hillside or in the woods at night!
Very good that Matt - right up my street. I recycle these canisters but now it appears you don't have to although you will be left with some empties on the other side. Still good if dodging the price. Nice one. Mark
I seen this on another youtube vid some time ago and thought Yep I can do that...Ive spent that much money on gear this summer i need to save now LOL
@@WyeExplorer
I re-use just three times, four at most, then hand them in for recycling, in case the seal leaks or ruptures.
I was just wondering if your cans your filling up say “do not fill up” on it as I bought an attachment and my bottle says “do not fill” but I don’t know what to do. Thanks
@@haydenchilds1790
They all advise not to refill.
As Maff says, he ignores that, as do many of us (because the manufacturers are bound by law to adhere to safety regulations to ensure public safety, but also, as you heard in the vid, they don't want us using a cheaper method to obtain gas, as that eats into their profits) but takes precautions to lessen the chance of accidents, such as using the correct adaptor and *not* overfilling beyond the cannister's stated capacity!
I use cannisters three or four times and have done for a few decades, then get rid of them and I'm still here to tell the tale.
As long as you keep focused there shouldn't be a problem.
The can has a weight.
Don't fill it over that weight.
Use scales, if it makes you feel better.
If you accidently do, then release the excess gas.
If the aerosol is 197g, then you know it will fit safely into a 220g canister.
Unless you plan a prolong stay outdoors, then maybe carry a spare aerosol.
I have a butane 240g. And also an empty. Butane 400g. Is ok if i refill or transfer to cannister 400g? Ty
yes Nick, no problem if you have the compatable valves curious as to why you would want to though unless the 400 is for a spacific burner , regards Matt

Check in comments.
Someone else called _Atube Viewer_ asked the same question and Maff provided a link.
As I read it, it's posted above your question, right now, but UA-cam has a habit of shuffling the comments.
Is it possible to over fill them? How do you kno when it’s full?
yes it is possible to overfill the canisters, due to the gasses expanding in warmer climate so the warmer the external temperature the more room the gas needs which is why they are never full from new.
As Maff has said in the vid, never fill beyond the off the shelf weight.
To be even safer, never fill beyond the stated content, as that will have allowed for a certain amount of gas expansion.
I would have thought you would need a few of the cheepo canisters on the go each time... As once the pressure has reached its equilibrium it would stop filling.
If you put the one you what to fill into the freezer for 30 minutes, then warm up the new one in water for a few minutes it will completely empty. GORDON
Looks like Gordon beat me to it but i must admit i haven't had to do that and I was quite surprised at how little remained in the refill can but i did think on the same lines as your good self and thought i would end up with two half full tins but is doesnt work like that ......some how .?....LOL
Perhaps I'm being a bit thick (not for the first time) - once you've half filled the target canister and therefore half emptied the source, isn't the pressure the same so no more gas will go in? You'll be left with hundreds of half empty ones, surely? :)
Now then firstly that is not a thick question and has been put top me before, there is a point where your filling can stops filling the other, but its all down to liquids and gases and a little help from the freezer. I'm not going to pretend I'm a scientist and try to baffle you but although the theory of equal pressure should come into play ...it doesn't and the filling can will unload a minimum of 85 to 90% of its content into the filled can. You can help this by keeping your filling can nice and warm and cooling the can to be filled in the freezer for 30 minutes before you fill. This alone will make a massive difference. I think (and think it is) that because your can is upside down you are pushing out liquid instead of gas and this then acts like any aerosol so the pressure drops a lot less rapidly until you start trying to empty the last bits and you start getting the gas. Now I could be talking utter rubbish but the system works even if the cans are not different temperatures. 🤷♀️ so i hope that sort of explains what i think is going on. regards Matt👍
@@MaffTUK You are correct. The reason the pressure drops while cold is because you’re lowering the BOILING POINT.
Alternatively, you can add just a little gas to the can being filled, leave it five minutes, then release the gas, producing a cold can.
Wasteful, yes, but handy, if you're out in the field or in a rush for whatever reason. 😉
Hi Matt I’ve heard you should put the bottle your filling into the freezer to liquify the gas. To make it not equalise the gas your filling from. Any logic or truth in this mate?
Aye, scientific logic, as it happens.
There's a comment from a DrCarp posted.

I set my teeshirt on fire and after filling with lingering gas, so beware
It's a gas, in the form of a flammable liquid.
If you are not careful droplets escape and will cling and saturate nearby surfaces.
It's a task better done outdoors.
Just buy the gas cartridage head converter for your stove that allows you to us the the non threaded canisters on your threaded head you don't have to transfer any gas then and in the process you don't risk blowing you head off lol
yep you can do that to LOL 👍
Do you have a reliable one to suggest? Thank you.
Have used the very cheap non threaded 4 pack butane/propane cartridges for at least 5 years in conjunction with a threaded adaptor (bought off ebay for just pence, but the metal capped ones like I have for about £10 are better tbh) I have a Bulin T4 stove which has an 18" hose. Like you say Maff, "what I do" (thus I'm in no way advocating you follow suit, wink wink) is my way to brew in the cold... I hold the canister 6" above the flame for no more than 10 seconds gently shaking it WHILE THE STOVE IS RUNNING to warm the gas, the cannister would explode if it was separate as there would be nowhere for the expanded gas to go, but with the cannister connected and the stove valve OPEN and running, it escapes at higher pressure, and as you'll soon discover the gas becomes turbo charged to boil the kettle in no time, (especially so, on the coldest of days... ) I have done it like this for years, my eyebrows are still bushy. No need for a Coleman petrol stove if you know this little trick, just something you can't advocate, so I wouldn't ever publicly say to do it... cough cough! Good luck for your 2019 campaigns and great Farlows video btw...
James, An 18 inch hose..... see that is so simple and of course something either you or I could not condone in any way shape or form 😉 but it works ...of course it works its heating itself up! brilliant and simple great comment and cheers mate
not great for cookers that sit on top of the cartridge as the cheap tall butane canisters arent very stable
