    I'd like to use this platform to thank the students of JNU for their exemplary courage and principles in standing up to repression and stifling of free speech. It is extremely heartening to see young people doing what in essence every single Indian should actually be doing - which is safeguarding democratic institutions. I can only thank you all on behalf of the country. You give me hope that the nation is in safe hands despite the atmosphere of terror which is being spread today. Keep up the good work folks!

PDP voters are considering Afzal Guru as a martyr . First let BJP leave the PDP alliance in J&K with the hard core anti nationalists.. Doctoring videos, photoshopping, manipulating through channels and making public against one of the prestigious universities in the country, BJP is taking lowest low and people who are supporting them now will soon leave them.

    With fearless analysis of the morphed antinational videos and pictures by ABP News, a letter from Barkha Dutt, a faceless speech from Ravish Kumar, this speech from P Sainath, and many other articles/reports, sections of the media are trying to bring sanity to the situation which demands everyone to wear their patriotism on their sleeves. Although this shows that we are still alive and awake as a nation, but the sadness, the anguish, the disappointment, the frustration, and hopelessness these express show that our national conscience is fast approaching its death. Poet Rabindranath Tagore, the author of our national anthem, also wrote, "Patriotism cannot be our final spiritual shelter; my refuge is humanity. I will not buy glass for the price of diamonds, and I will never allow patriotism to triumph over humanity as long as I live". We, as a nation, seem to have lost the consciousness that helps us distinguish between glass and diamond.

  • @masimomozini1

    Its a nice lecture. Different people have different interpretation about an incident. For P Sainath, conscious sloganeering "bharat ke barbadi taak jung rahegi jari" is only a way to express dissent but for many others (I know quite a few of them), its a way to disrespect and threaten the sovereignty of India, in short anti-nationalism. Each country and society has its own virtues and vices which are always discussed and debated for gradual improvement and rectification but should anti-nationalism be no criminalized? As per my understanding of IPC and constitutional provision of India, it is a crime.

    Just amazing lecture!
    I have a question & want anyone from the JNU to answer this.
    What is ur stand on anti-india slogans shouted? Does voice of dissent mean you can break India?
    I 100% agree that wealth is being accumulated in the hands of few. What is the solution to this?
    Sorry for being naive. I ask only because iam confused.

    • @NavneetVasistha
      @NavneetVasistha 8 років тому +3

      +James Randy I'm not from JNU but I don't see India having been broken despite these slogans. How can the BJP sit and form a govt with the likes of late Mufti Saeed and Sajjad Lone despite them having been secessionist in their pasts?
      The solution for your question is social justice (not the rule of law since law can be influenced). How can the govt. write off 1.14 lakh crores and make a hue and cry when writing off farmer debts? How is it made possible for people to stuff their money in Zurich, Ireland and other places while other people have not got enough to eat?
      How can you allow corporates to get away with polluting the soil, air and food and get away with murder?
      The answers have to come from public consciousness. Unfortunately this will not come if we are greedy and only look to fill our pockets and not worry about our workers and farmers and labourers.

    • @masimomozini1
      @masimomozini1 8 років тому

      +Navneet Vasistha Lets not digress from the core question. Question is not whether the slogans can break India or not? Question is the sloganeering "bharat ke barbadi taak jung rahegi jaari" is a punishable offence within the sovereign gambit of Indian law or not? Each country and society has its own virtues and vuces which are always discussed and debated for gradual rectification but the core question is can activities against the national sovereignty be allowed? If your answer is yes, then you have a very different understanding about the concept of a Nation. Thanks

    • @NavneetVasistha
      @NavneetVasistha 8 років тому

      No one has shied away from condemning those statements but the sovereignty of a nation is best followed by following the rule of its law. Try them in a court and by the law of the land. But you know as well as I know that these accusations won't stand in court. Is that then why goondaism is considered nationalism? How is airing alleged doctored videos without clarification nationalism. Let's have a debate on nationalism if you want. Let's have scholars from all angles give their views on a public platform without threat to anyones life.
      We can't afford to be so divided that a minor incident like this allows people to break the law with gumption and senior ministers like Rajnath Singh look foolish.
      I hope you see my point. There is space in my heart for your sentiments but let's debate and solve this. Let us not drive a wedge through this great nation.

    • @masimomozini1
      @masimomozini1 8 років тому

      Doctored video???? SO, you mean to say the court could not take cognizance of the video of 09th Feb, 2016 or you also think that those guys have been booked based upon 11th Feb, 2016 video. What to debate ?

    • @NavneetVasistha
      @NavneetVasistha 8 років тому

      +Masi Masi Stop beating about the bush and confusing yourself. On what basis has Kanhaiya Kumar been arrested? Is it not the 11th Feb video? Have aspersions not been cast over the versions run by Zee and Times Now?
      As for the 9th Feb protest, it is condemn-able and the government should take action as per law. But sedition? Seriously?
      As for the debate, let's have a Oxford Union style debate about differing ideas of nationalism, the role of the flag, the national anthem and other state symbols. Let it include Akhand Bharat and also the left-liberal view. I'd even pay to watch that.
      Does this government feel confident enough to have it? They are happy to trade Kamlesh Tiwari for muslim votes just as the Congress did and then call out everyone for their 'pseudo-secular' stance.

    While Sainath's work over the decades for rural societies in general and farmers in particular is appreciable, his insinuation that all their are somehow because of the present government is ridiculous. The saturation of rural poverty and thriving of crony capitalism in this country are the result of policy indifference since the reign of the first prime minister of the country. It is fine to sensitize impressionable students to the issues of inequality and political corruption, but to somehow put the entire blame on a government which has been in office for less than two years smacks of his own agenda.

    It is shocking to see that celebrated journalists like P.Sainath use the issue to propagate their personal views on politics and economics. It is the duty of people like P.Sainath, to mentor the students to select the right frame work of protest and argument rather than a parody of BJP, RSS, VHP, Bajarang Dal,Capitalists, Wealth, Greed and Beef amongst others. Someone might be accused of stealing a cow or a frail octogenarian trying to kill policemen, but that has no relation with students chanting the demise of India.

    i would have wanted to agree with Sainath but such a partisan analysis of the administration without bringing out even a single positive and constantly uttering names of castes and religions, makes me doubt the ingenuity of this speech. It is more a case of sour grapes accumulated by Sainathji over the years especially after being mowed down by his own magazine few decades ago.

    You wont let industry to develop and you wont allow liberalization of the economy. That takes away your moral right to comment on the income of rural population. Because of the irresponsible actions and statements of the people like you Mr. Sainath, common people are misguided and they are being hidden from the true reasons for their poverty.

    Afzal Guru, from what I read, had joined a terrorist group in POK with an intent to liberate Kashmir, surrendered to BSF, got a second lease of life and worked as an area manager for some pharmaceutical company, then gets caught with proofs of conspiring a terrorist attack on Indian parliament, punished after some 12 years which I think is disgraceful for the judiciary system. I hate the system, I hate it for the time it took when they believed they had solid evidence. That said, I am not in a position to actually judge Afzal Guru because I dont know what actually happened, I dont have any of my own intelligence team to find if it was a mistake, lets say he may have dialled the attackers no. randomly as a marketing call part of his job or he was framed, may be intelligence picked up from chits of a lakh names, and I am pretty sure these slogan shouters, I wont generalize them as JNU students because not all share the same sentiment, don't have an intelligence system in place either to find that out. Still, lets say their very own in-house James Bond figured out that Afzal Guru was picked up randomly. But then I have some doubts and confusions, how is it that there have been no such attacks in Pakistan and China? How is it that Kashmiris who want to be liberated do not go shout slogans, or plan attacks in these two countries? Have they forgotten that what Pakistan and China has is also Kashmir or they have accepted that they cannot get it back? How is it that the attacks always happen in India and gets planned in Pakistan? Why was a wide spread hatred orchestrated among Kashmiri Muslims to clear out Kashmiri Pandits? Where they not Kashmiris? Why is the voice of Kashmiri Pandits and a large section of Kashmiri Muslims not even considered the voice of Kashmiris? Why are the students, political groups, the human rights activists not shouting slogans in Pakistan or against Pakistan protesting their occupation of Kashmir? Why no one came out in support of Kashmiri Pandits when they were massacred? Can the slogan shouters assure that these section of Kashmiris wont be massacred again? Can they assure Pakistan and China wont take over Kashmir if Indian forces leave the state? Let’s say it’s not India’s problem after it lets go off Kashmir. But can they assure that Pakistan would not try to penetrate Himachal and come up with POH? Would these slogan shouters be safe if the Indian Army pulls out? Would these slogan shouters have raised a voice if one of their family members got killed in the parliament attack? 15 died for the respect of this country. Why are they not condemning their death? Why is the Parliament attack not protested against? Were they not humans or these so called human rights activists believe that getting killed was part of their job? Even if I keep all this aside I do not understand. How are the slogans Destruction of India & Partition of India & hail Pakistan not an act of treason? The whole episode is being manipulated to sound as sedition. Its sad to see how much politics of this country has fallen that they have to play such a low level of politics. This wasn’t even the government when Afzal Guru was hanged. But an attempt at sedition can be tolerated. Everybody wants to rule, everyone wants power. But I fail to see how is this not anti-national? These people are challenging the existence of India not the government. It’s pathetic to see how political parties have made mockery of the situation and allowed the real problem to be shadowed out. One attacking, the accuse other condemning it, it’s a joke. As for separatist, we already have so many problems with the two countries that got created and mind you there’s nothing good that’s happening there either. It’s not that they lived happily ever after. Two new countries only allowed for two extra PMs, some more political parties to be created, some more to become leaders who may have never got a chance otherwise, some more scams, some more getting a chance to earn that extra money. General people who live there face almost the same problems that we face, actually its worse over there. Number of Bangladeshi refugees we have is an open example of this. Division based on religion or language is only to fuel the political motive of a group of people who are as much hungry for power as the one they are fighting against. Over 90% population in these two partitioned countries practice one common religion, but they eventually figured out not everyone shared the same thoughts. People and groups with problems will always have problems. And these problems will always be manipulated by power hungry groups to use to their cause. History is a proof to that. For people who stays out of these problems never have one. Pakistan was created for the want of this power by some men, not every Muslim wanted the partition not every Muslim left. Everyone wants to lead, everyone wants power and one of the classic lessons taught by the British "Divide and Rule" always works.

      +Raunaq Sahay Appreciate you agree with me. Its not out of sentiments. Its analysis. How many really gain out of this? If you see its mostly the people you see in the picture and people around them. People shout slogans for farmers, question is how many really help them? If these political parties really cared to help, their members got enough money in their bank accounts to spend 100s of crores in their campaign, which is enough for atleast some of the things they claim to do after their party wins.

    Sabse badi problem jo basic problem hoti hai woh hai .. Why uneducated are ruling Educated ? Who are giving certificates to these MLA and MP, why not there is any written and Objective test for them ?

    not said anything new.These are being in writings and slogans for sometime now in all anti establishment sections.one reads and knows.I knew them. however he found time to discuss these in JNU(which already knows all ) is welcome.I felt Hindu is hated word in Hindustan.Every other word is welcome.One can not overlook the fact that the it is hindu mentality that made gandhi a hero and the chela Nehru kept a distance while fully milking the Hindu psychology then. If Rahul becomes PM it will be due to this very psychological inclination of hindus. Anyway What he said about hindi language i said that to a friend about 16 years back or so. I was held anti national.

    I have very high regards for you Sir & have always applauded all your speeches. Having said this, let me ask, is this very speech a justification for slogans like 'Bharat ki barbadi tak jung rahegi' ? How can any speech glorifying the drawbacks of the country or the Government be a justification for acts that clearly show disregard for the NATION. I stand for dissent, I stand for variance on ideologies, I stand for democracy, I firmly stand for freedom of expression. But I don't stand with JNU on this. No freedom is absolute, there are reasonable restrictions on Freedom of expression as well.You can curse the Government, you can curse a political party; it is totally okay. But venomous statements like 'Bharat tere tukde honge' 'Bharat teri barbadi tak jung rahegi' is anti-nationalism. Sir, are you trying to say that it is okay to shout out such statements in a public platform?

    With due respect and considering the concerns of Mr. P Sainath, I just wonder where he was in the 10-year-long congress regime. The points he is raising are all valid and need to be looked at, but do they really have any connection with the BJP? India does have problems but that doesn't make a bunch of terrorists worthy of creating havoc in the peaceful environment of a prestigious university. The JNU protest is in support of the likes of Umar Khalid, Kanhaiya Kumar who in my thought are not even worthy of being called students. How do I convince myself to stand with JNU on such a foolish premise?
