I lived in Honolulu when I was in college and would grab a couple custard malasadas from Leonard’s every week. I’m now back on the mainland but I can’t stop thinking about them. I’m definitely giving this a try. Thank you🙏🏼

I'm really curious about the vinegar in the dough, because I've never seen vinegar added to like a bread recipe before. Thank you for the recipe though! ♥️♥️♥️
I've made this twice but I couldn't achieve the same fluffy malasada. They came out more like andagi. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong because I watched the video multiple times before starting. Also, the sugar didn't stick very well either. I tried dipping them after they were cool and while they were still hot. Any advice?
I've been wanting to update this recipe with a few more tips, keep an eye out for a new video on this some time soon :) I'll address those problems that you brought up in that new video. Thank you for asking.
Most of the Portuguese immigrants to Hawaii (late 19th century to early 20th) came from the Madeira islands. Maybe the Hawaiian version was a variation of Madeira style malasadas.
The difference is that bread flour has more protein than all purpose. It means the bread will rise higher, but if you use all purpose flour, it will still rise fine.
Hahaha hey its for a very fluffy malasada, nah jk the correction is supposed to be 1 11/2 tsp. I wish UA-cam allowed me to reupload the correction, but I left a card addressing it 🤣😂😅
Ono Hawaiian Recipes oh okay sorry I didn’t see the correction. Glad you’re aware and you’re welcome :) they came out delicious though! Just like Leonard’s!
There is a mistake, when you say 1 1/2 teaspoons of yeast in the ingredient part of the video and below the video, on the screen when you show yourself putting in the yeast in the bowl, it says “1 1/2 CUPS YEAST” Just want to make sure nobody puts 1 1/2 CUPS! No worries though 😉 🤙🤙
Ahhhh thanks for pointing that out! That was a mistake, it should’ve said 1 1/2 TSP. Thats a lot of yeast hahaha I’ll add a card to the video to correct that. Sadly UA-cam doesn’t allow reuploads 😅
Funky right? I've seen other recipes use vinegar as well. What the vinegar does is make the malasadas lighter and springier. If the dough is sticker keep adding in about a tablespoon of flour as you knead it. It depends on your location. For example I'm in a drier place, so I would add in less flour. If you're in a more humid place, add more flour to the dough. Hope that helps ☺️
I was just in Hawaii and had some of these with the filling. They were delicious! Thank you for sharing this recipe.
I remember plenty of times chasing down the Malasada truck on Oahu. Can't wait to try this recipe, thanks for posting.

A favorite of a certain grandson of a Kahuna of the Alola Region POKEMON!
😂😂😂
Since there's no Leonard's out here in Oregon, homemade malasadas will have to do 😉❤
Hehehe it'll taste ono! 🤤
Pre covid I'd get them at Uwajimaya in Beaverton on the weekend, haven't been there in a while.
Leonard"s malasadas are the best ...I miss them, so thank you for this recipe, I may try to make it some day
Me: How many malasadas do you want?
Hau: yes
69 likes. NICE.
🤣😂🤣😂
how many you got?
That’s exactly why I’m here
Yea, same here! XD

@@OnoHawaiianRecipes That, and Sun and Moon both feature malasadas. And there's a character from said games who loves eating them.

@@baselsalam they haven't put one up yet. I've checked periodically here and on the website.
I will try this..
Not gonna lie, this looks more appetizing than regular donuts
Can you use whole-wheat flour?
This is different than how my mom makes hers. I’m from Portugal. I guess this is a unique Hawaiian way. Looks good though.
Most of the Portuguese immigrants to Hawaii (late 19th century to early 20th) came from the Madeira islands. Maybe the Hawaiian version was a variation of Madeira style malasadas.
what's the vinegar for?
Aloha? Alola Alola Region!
can we use a stand mixer?
What kind of vinegar do you add to the dough?
Nice
What is bread flour? My local store only has plain and self rising which
one can I use?
The difference is that bread flour has more protein than all purpose. It means the bread will rise higher, but if you use all purpose flour, it will still rise fine.
Ono Hawaiian Recipes rajahs! fank yoo
What is the name you are putting inside the malasada? May I know I want to learn.
Haupia is what they were saying its like a coconut custard in Hawaii.
My mom put a piece of banana inside sometimes! Yum
Ohhh that sounds wonderful!
could I made with a stand mixer? I need this
You probably can. I havent tried though.
Can I swap the vinegar with apple cider vinegar?
*Hau taking notes from this*
... so after you said, add in the yeast, the little box bottom left says 1 1/2 cup Yeast😲

Wow 👀 Happiness Is Possible Malasadas Delites
I just did I video how to make malasadas too! Yours turned out a lot better than mine haha!
Ohhh I'll still check out your video! 😁
How many malasadas turn out for this recipe
It can yield up to 12-15 malasadas depending on how big/small you make them 😊
Make sure you fix the measurement on the yeast because it says 1 1/2 CUP when pouring it in the bowl.
Yup I made a card pop up to say there was a correction. Sadly I can't reupload a corrected video but thank you for letting me know 😉
Ono Hawaiian Recipes oh okay sorry I didn’t see the correction. Glad you’re aware and you’re welcome :) they came out delicious though! Just like Leonard’s!
1 1/2 cup yeast????
Howcome it’s saying 1 1/2 cup yeast but the ingredients is saying tsp?
Anyone know how this recipe compares to Leonard’s?
Too dry. The order of how the ingredients are mixed is not the same.
Can this be done with an air fryer?
Possibly. I havent tried it personally.
What oil do you use?
I used vegetable oil because it has a relative high smoking point.
10/30 !!! LOL
lol their is a correction on the top right corner where u find the Haupia pudding recipe
Thank you! I wish I could go back and edit that part haha...you definitely don't want to add in a cup of yeast!
Why do you have ingredients left over? Are your measurements are off ?
In the video it says 1 1/2 tsp of yeast and then in the demonstration it says 1 1/2 cup of yeast... is it 1 1/2 tsp??
Ahhhh thanks for pointing that out! That was a mistake, it should’ve said 1 1/2 TSP. Thats a lot of yeast hahaha I’ll add a card to the video to correct that. Sadly UA-cam doesn’t allow reuploads 😅
