  • A group of Massachusetts hospitals will no longer report babies born with drugs in their system to state welfare agencies. Why? Because substance abuse disorders “disproportionately affect black people.” This is absurd-let’s talk about it.

When they pass laws and policy like this, for everyone paying attention it’s essentially re-firming stereotypes. “what you thought about these people is correct, we are just going to render the metric that allows you to accurately observe the unsightly statistic to prove the stereotype true totally unusable.”

I have so many health problems, I've been on methadone since I was 4. My health, life, destroyed. I'm sorry you went through it too. I don't know your story but people like us need to speak up. I was a neonatal nurse for 47 years and I took care of my share of addicted babies. If the powers-that-be saw how utterly miserable these poor babies were in the postnatal period, they’d sing a different tune. The babies had feeding difficulties, sleeping issues, and they required drugs themselves to wean them down from what was already in their systems. Very sad situation indeed.

Always when I read or hear anyone saying people of color/colour (whatever the heck is right) or "black people" I can't help myself but asking "why?"
First of all we're neither black nor white. We're at max beige and brown. Both colors are on the same spectrum. And guess what...its the same fricking color. The difference is the brightness level, isn't it? So correctly mentioning would be lighter/brighter and darker.
And did you see what I did there? Since the difference isn't the color, it's not only dumb to speak of people of colors, while meaning only people with darker skin tone, it's also misleading because white, or correctly beige, is a color too you know?! And why is it relevant at all? Why don't you or us all just speak of people? That's what's so wrong with Wokeness actually. They speak of white comfort etc. and make themselves guilty of racism right away with that words and thoughts. They say men are toxic and make themselves guilty of sexism as well.
I've said it years ago: Wokeness is nothing but revenge. That's it.
Think about the judiciary, have you ever seen that the traumatized victim of whatever crime you can think of - Determined about the offenders sentence, itself?!
Why the heck are we allowing it then to society and culture/popculture?!
I'm so sorry, I know that part doesn't really fit here in that topic, but I had to say/write it.
Just to make it clear...about the rest I'm with you there. I had a way bigger comment ready when I accidentally hit the wrong spot on my phone and everything disappeared, stupid youtube comment functions...
Anyway, that's why the comment might appear now somewhat...lose or fragmented.😅
Good luck there overseas. Hopefully you will solve your problems soon. I don't even know why I care so much, never really liked the USA as the world's leader. But I can't keep watching the downfall while seeing the rise of China..or even Russia. I wish people all over the world would finally realize in what shape the world is right now.

After working in a Neonatal ICU as a RN for 15+ years, I have unfortunately seen too many babies suffer through maternally induced drug withdrawal after birth. These babies would cry inconsolably, shake and tremor till sores formed on their skin, sweat for no reason, vomit and horrific diarrhea for weeks, as well as many other things that aren’t externally visible. The pain and suffering they endured is 100% preventable. These mothers, regardless of race, age or social economic status need to be identified, followed and supported for the best infant outcomes. Taking care of a newborn is indescribably hard at times for post-partum women without a substance abuse problem; this is a set up for future tragic events for these children.

In the state of Massachusetts, if a child is found to have been exposed to drugs either by evidencing drug withdrawal after birth or by positive toxic screens the hospital has to report this to the child protection agency through a report called a 51A. This is state law. I worked in OB/GYN at BMC for over 25 years so am very familiar with the law so Mass General cannot ignore what they are mandated to do. They cannot pick and choose who they decide to report to drug test either. They are not doing babies any favors by letting them go home to families where moms are using drugs. Additionally those kids might grow up not knowing why they have the issues they do. If they know maybe they can get help - but that's much harder without a diagnosis.
I say this because I know couples who have adopted babies that had fetal alcohol syndrome that caused at lot of issues. Had they had that diagnosis from the start they might have gotten more help when they really needed it.

I’m pulling out my hair. As a retired medical social worker in the OB Department. Craziness.

I was a young mom and I wouldn't even take Tylenol when pregnant. Moms should give their child the best start.

Lets not protect innocent babies just in case we hurt the feelings of full grown adults 🫠

At this point they may as well not call them babies but "failed abortions".

Ridiculous times we live in. In the UK two newborn babies were dumped outside in bags in freezing temperatures and instead of going after them for neglect and attempted murder they said they were concerned for the mother and could she please get herseld checked out. Also saw a podcast where a rape victim kept her baby and told pro choice woman that using rape victims to make her point can be hurtful. The woman said she was disgusted that she kept the rape baby and she should have killed it. Now babies who are born in hospitals are also being targeted. Why does society now view babies as less than a child or adult? It just seems today people don't value the most vulnerable anymore. I think it says alot about a society by how they value the children.
