I'm old school. I still shoot with my Nikon D600 + 50mm 1.2 AI-s. All the latest cameras have the same iphone experience and similar digital output. At 65, it gets more emotional and less logical. You see there is not much sand left in the hour glass. The time has come to buy the Leica M10. In the end, we all want a Leica.

Just got myself a Leica M9. It’s been the best decision ever. My interest and love of photography has been piqued again. I’m loving the whole process without the EVF, no chimping, no extra and waffle getting in the way. The image quality is superb and I feel connected with the camera that I’ve not with any other.

Having used Canon and Fujifilm in the past (with a whole stable of lenses and accessories), I found paring down my kit to an M10-R and Q2 to be quite liberating. There's so much more with less clutter, and the shooting experience with the M10 is so satisfying.

Really enjoyed this video; related very closely with my own experience. The M8 is my first Leica, I typically shoot it or an X100s.
The X100s is the one that's always in my bag (it is tiny and so lightweight!) but I'm edging toward taking the M8 more often - the tactile and emotional connection that the M8 imbues indeed cannot be explained. Glad to have come across your channel, and looking forward to checking your other content and reading through the comments of your well-informed and passionate viewers.

I moved up to the M10 a few months ago after 9 years of shooting the M-E (type 220); no sensor issues at all. As much as I loved the M-E, the M10 is wonderful! I debated the M10 vs the M11 but after tons of comparisons I decided on the M10 as having exactly what I wanted, no more. I is the camera that gets me out to shoot as my buddy fumbles with settings and buttons on the back of his DSLR. It is a keeper!

Hello, I shoot with an M10r for similar reasons i.e lack of technical distractions and simplicity. I don’t think the experience is close to film though as the mindset for me is completely different. With film the limitations are far greater in regards to light changes (fixed iso) and your mindset when pressing the shutter - is it really worth a frame and is one frame enough. Cheers for the perspective.

Hard question to answer without knowing budget! Voigtlander make some awesome lenses! And maybe it’s better having a couple of those over one Leica lens
If I could only use one lens then probably a 35mm, f2 or f1.4 depending on budget I think it might be the most versatile
2 lenses then I love the 28mm and 50mm combo

Great description on feeling like you’re the only person in your family that can take a photo of your dog moving towards you with a Leica M. I understand this so much and the reason I got an M240 was because I love film photography and these systems bring you right back into that.
The draw towards rangefinder style is just because my nose is big and I could have my face resting on the side of the camera and I could open my left eye and see what else is coming into frame. Again, great video.

When I was young and later studying, I was always short on money. I always had to rethink every buy and most of the time logically sell one part of my gear to do a logical purchase of another one. Today, I luckily have a decent job and therefore stopped selling one logic. Once I had to sell my Canon 5D classic, which haunted me so long, that later on, i had to emotionally rebuy it again. :) And even, if I have a better camera, the 5D classic. The old one is everytime in reach and still gets used a lot.

Having owned alot of camera brands over the years, I think the Fuji came closest to Leica in terms of 'having a soul'. Yes I miss (a little) the latest fastest techno whizz camera features, but the experiences generally left me cold. I now use a Leica SL601 and Q2 which are amazing to use. I recommend everyone buy a used or rent a Leica camera just to experience the 'soul' they have and how they contribute to the photography experience. Great words and great video 👍👍👍

Never owned a Leica but I have owned lots of classic 35mm and Medium format film cameras. Due to the cost of Leicas (both digital and film) it's not something I'll be acquiring anytime soon. I can understand your decision though on why you bought your M10. I'll be sticking with my X-T2, X-E1 and Panasonic G9 all of which I'm really happy with. I still have 6 rolls of Kentmere Pan 100. Over the years I've had X-100s, X-Pro1,2 and 3! And I just couldn't get the images to look the way I liked! I wasn't happy with the Dynamic Range and image quality overall. They didn't excite me when I looked at them. Got my M10 around a year ago and I just love the files. I hardly have to touch in Lightroom to get the colours the way I want them, the images look gorgeous. The M10 isn't perfect though, very easy blow out the highlights, which you've mentioned. And I must say I do miss autofocus sometimes. Didn't think I would. The minimal focus distance of 0.7 metres also frustrates me from time to time. And trying to focus wide open in low light with the patch is a skill I've yet to master! LV and Focus Peaking not as good as on the Fujis either? I do love that massive OVF and the images when you get it right. Using Zone Focusing and Sunny 16 in Venice this year was amazing. I got some of my favourite shots ever. But you definitely have to work for them and it does have its limitations.

I’ve been shooting with an M7 for 5 years now and, after bouncing between Nikon and Sony for digital, I finally sold my A7iii to buy an M240. From the moment I picked it up, it felt familiar. Unlike the Sony, it makes me want to pick it up and use it every single day. I know one day I’ll get a Leica M it’s just a matter of time I do love the simplicity of them. I have an M4 and an M246. The M246 is as close as I get to "film" while still using digital. However, the M4 is a lot more fun to use, since there is a much more direct connection between pushing the button and taking the photo. THe M246 needs some time to start up, and when you push the shutter button the effect is not instant.

I think you are on to something when comparing the M10 experience with that of shooting film. If you refrain from constantly checking your liveview and just go out and shoot, the actual experience is very similar to analog photography. You become far more present in the situation you're trying to capture, and it is a much more rewarding experience - to the extend where you might find yourself not missing the film photography at all.. That happened to me - until I somewhat contradictory decided, that I have to own an M3. Now I have to shoot a film or two a year to justify if, but just looking at the two cameras together is all worth it ;-) The M10 is such an enjoyable camera to use. Ergonomics are great, the tactile feel ditto, and it's not just a retro look - it simply is a very functional design incorporating experience and feedback over more than a century. The functional also shows remarkeable tendency to look stunning too

I now have two Leicas. I got a used M10 this spring and a used M10M this week. As long as I'm extremely careful with exposure, I can get great results from both. I wouldn't want to pay much more than $5000 for either of them though. That's a fair price in my opinion. They both blow highlights while the camera is telling you that the exposure is correct. This obviously complicates the process of getting a good exposure. These cameras are for serious enthusiasts, because casual shooters wouldn't tolerate these kinds of issues in a Sony or Canon mirrorless camera.

Another aspect related to buying M cameras is that if do the purchase closed to the bottom of the depreciation curve, you will not lose money when selling them. So shooting Leica might be one of the best free things in life - sounds strange, I know.

Congratulations on the M10. Today when driving I heard a programme on the return of vinyl and an interview with the owner of Rega. I think there is definitely a connection and this desire to be close to the mechanics and the process, for the experience. I also think that the quest for perfection is also an interesting one as so often perfection is boring and interesting cameras and interesting lenses can lead to a different look. For me one of the images that pleased me most was a shot taken using a Helios 44-2 on a Leica M. I worked out the camera body cost me 270 times the Len’s, but the look was great… and yes I could have no doubt achieved the same look mounting the lens on an A7.

You put it so well . I totally get it . In my own case I fought against the logic of a full frame camera for a MFT camera . The why was simple enough ; I wanted small, light , go anywhere camera that was fun to use and provided very useable images for my photo books . The sad irony of all this logic is that I never feel the same emotional attachment to photos taken with my phone , but they are as useable and as satisfying in the books as Those taken on the camera with a great lens .
We should not over complicate why we like using a particular piece of gear and should focus more on the creative juices we have to produce a body of work that is initially gratifying to us and secondly to others .
There is no perfect camera we all know; but it does not stop us aspiring to there being one ha ha.

After all that previous painstaking logic you came down on the side of the Fujifilm and you bought a Leica anyway. Now you're free to make your art because its your free spirit making it. Don't get me wrong. Logic is not a dirty word. We still need logic. Without obeying the dogmatic rules of science we'd never find our freedom to fly to the moon or drive a car. Without obeying the dogmatic rules of physics we'd never find our freedom to be able to build a camera to make art with in the first place. Fuji sells re-labeled Gold at a retail price of much less than Portra and I managed to pick up large quantities of that emulsion fresh at a lower than retail price in bulk from a local store.

You end up just using it like any other mirrorless camera. “Why I use Leica” is an impossible question to answer on UA-cam. I just hope you don’t get too many trolls. We shouldn’t justify why we shoot leica. If someone doesn’t get it then fine. Get a Sony or whatever. I don’t care what anyone shoots. But the Leica M10R is my only camera. I take it everywhere. I’ve never used any camera more.
Also, I’ve found the Leica community is so nice. Not the Leica collectors, but the photographers. They just love photography and they’re not obsessed with gear. I found the Fuji people to be obsessed with gear and the brand and it’s pretty toxic.
