He was basically bi. The confusion comes from a combination of him getting really into character for all of his personas, him not caring too much for labels, and him getting tired of having to answer the same question over and over again. He called himself bi most of the time though, and he had relationships with people of all genders so it’s not as confusing as it might seem out of context lol
Also the fact that “bi” wasn’t a super well-known label in the 70s, so lots of men interested in men called themselves gay even if they also liked women
