- You may have heard of Jason White, choir director for the Kanye West MAss choir, but what you may not know is that Jason White plays a mean piano. In fact, Jason's unique musical sound and style on the piano was a well-known and sought after some for gospel musicians on the West Coast and even throughout the gospel music industry.
In this video we react to a song Jason White plays on the piano called, 'Jesus, Jesus, there is something about that name.' He plays this song in the key of B, let's see if we can figure out the chords, unique voicings, and phrasing he uses for gospel musicians on the piano

Jason White is certainly a pioneer in contemporary gospel piano playing! Jason White - piano, Mike Bereal - organ, and the Neuble brothers on bass/drums was the credits for a lot of great gospel records (e.g. Judith Mcallister, Norman Hutchins, etc)

Jason was the best they ever had at West Angeles COGIC for 20+ years!...no one they have had since, has been more talented and more dedicated! A major mistake for Bishop Blake to have let him go...

@@CHASECOM3 there was some kind of falling out. Jason posted a long letter online explaining what happened, but I don't see it posted anymore. Hopefully he may post it again. Of course he's moved on now, and probably is in a better situation now, but I sure miss him and Mike Bereal being at WestA.

Jason White has been giving that west coast sound for a long time.... From his time with Carlton Pearson and live in Azusa, to Judy mccalister, Kurt Carr, Norman Hutchins old stuff..... West Angeles is missing out

He simply doesn’t get enough credit. I’m glad Kanye West saw the gift and elevated him to heights the church could not. Judith McAllister hasn’t had a hit since letting him go, and that West Angeles sound is as good as gone.

In that video, at 2:37, he goes ''and there is no doubt in my mind'' but when he sings the ''mind'' part, he plays this extremely mysterious & powerful chord that I cannot figure out or can wrap my head around! It's really a special chord!

Jason White was the 90's power with West Angeles but in fact really before Jason there was Tony Wilkins who was the 80's power from the Saints in Praise West Angeles albums of 1989, along with Patrick Henderson who was a notable in the 80's as well. Tony did West Angeles and LA Mass Choir albums that really pioneered the West Coast gospel sound and paved the way for Jason White in the 90's with Judy and Norman. Some people don't recognize West Angeles history prior to Jason White. Jason White was very much so a pioneer but not the original pioneer that Tony Wilkins was in West Angeles music history. Tony Wilkins was the 90's power with Church of the Harvest as well while Jason emerged as the 90's power with West Angeles. True History!!!

4:33 isn't really half diminished but more the sound of E major (4th degree) going onto E minor 6 (4th degree minor) (classical plagal cadence).... love your video man.
Depends on the root/inversion. Sean mentioned it also being a min6 there. That shape has a number of names: min6, 9th upper structure, half dim., Tristan chord, etc.
