Wilkinson sword blades are so underrated. I’ve used them for years and had no issues. They cut nicely and provide a comfortable shave. They don’t irritate the skin and are well manufactured. All of their packs feature a sharps disposable section at the bottom too. Yes, they aren’t the most razor sharp blades in the world but they are damn consistent, you can easily go for three shaves and won’t notice a drop off like you will with a feather or Russian blade.

I have to give you kudos, your advice has been extremely helpful. After 35 year using cartridges razors. With your advice I purchased a Merkur 34C and Asta blades. Your advice lead to a great first shave experience, I'll try some other type of blades. But the Merkur 34C absolutely gave an amazing shave. Now I just need to find a very good shaving soap. i can tell it definitely is not Van der Hagen shaving soap! Thank you for all your excellent videos they've been a great help and afford me a great first experience!

Got recently Gilette Platinum in Merkur 34 C. Absolutely the smoothest shave experience. I shave my head and face and I go by the smoothness of the whole experience. Astras are a bit aggressive and leave a bit of rash. Voskhods are smooth and sharp. However, Gilette Platinum is a great combination of smoothness and sharpness. I get two shaves of beard and head with it. The best blade for anyone with tough stubble and sensitive skin. Anyone interested in my spare Astras, I will send them to you.

I’ve never really liked the Feather blade , but my best shaves are with the Astra platinum, Gillette Silver Blue and the Voskhod. I also use and like all the razors you mentioned. Of course I shave every day and heartily agree with your assessment of the Astra.

I dare to ask - why a lot of foreigners prefer Voskhod blades ? In my opinion, it's soft, thin and in last years it hasn's teflon coating (which was their important technology) and they are very cheap in Russia (0,15 $ per pack of 5 blades, 5-10 times cheaper than Astra or Silver blue) and made for one-time use. "Mostochlegmash" manufacturer has a big model line - three Rapira blades (Platinum lux, Swedish supersteel, Classic supersteel), Ladas and finally Voskhod. So, why Voskhod ? Thanks in advice !

    • @Lstanfield
      @Lstanfield 27 днів тому

@@nikita_a_s I get three shaves per blade and throw the blade away. I don’t know about any coating; I just appreciate the results. I always use a pre shave. Sometimes it’s the Edwin Jagger , sometimes Proraso , and sometimes Taconic oil. I usually face lather, but occasionally bowl lather. I prefer a Merkur 37c or Edwin Jagger 3one6 razor.

I returned to DE shaving more than 15 years ago. I remember going to the local Walgreens then to buy more cartridges and (once again) I couldn't remember what system I had so I wound up buying a new razor. This was at the time when more and more blades were appearing in cartridges, and it all seemed ridiculous. I went online and bought a Merkur Barber Pole and a bunch of different blades and never looked back.
Although I enjoyed the hobby of shaving I have to admit that for many years I have just shaved. Recently, I have once again become more serious and I'm happily surprised at all of the new DE razors as well as an even greater selection of blades for US consumers. For fun, I picked up a King Gilette razor and was surprised at its quality. I'm also trying a couple of blade brands that I had never used before.
It is interesting to hear an individual's blade choices. It does seem very dependent on beard type, skill level, and the razor used. I can't stand many of the blades that others love, for instance, Feather and Shark. They don't cut my face, but they feel like they are ripping through it with each pass. My beard is more soft and fine, perhaps that is the reason I can enjoy blades like Personna. I just ran out of my massive supply of them (I used them for years) which prompted me to re-ignite my hobby as I started to look on Amazon and eBay for some DE blade options. Thanks for the video!

💯 on hair type and skill level. Just because a blade or razor works for me and you doesn't mean it will work for everyone else. That's why I like the Rockwell sixes because you have three different plates that you can interchange the blades with and I haven't found one that doesn't work in this razor having six different razors in one. Thanks for your comment. Very informative.

Great video and nice camera when you were zooming in. I came back to wet shaving this year after more than 30 years give or take and I am enjoying it greatly.
I experienced with tons of razor blades except Voskhod and Perma in your video. My beard is med coarse less coarse than yours. I use Viking adjustable Emperor, and I may buy an open comb to treat myself. I currently use boar and Black badger brushes and Sterling shave soap, and Col Conk.
    My favourites are:
Feather, persona, Bic chrome, 7'oclock the yellow, and Treet Carbon.
My worst that gave me Nick's cuts and irritations are :
    Treet Platinum, RK,
And the not so great that didnt cut it for me are Astra both green and blue and All of Derby.
    Thanks again

What a great video! Thanks for sharing. Astra used to make great blades and the ones made in the new Indian factory are not as good. I don't mean to say all Indian blades are bad, but comparing Astra Russia vs Astra India it is an totally different blade, and the new ones are not that good. Feather has been a learning challenge for me, but they do make great blades. As a newer DE shaver, I have found Wilkinson Sword to be a solid choice as well as 7 o'clock green, nancet, Perma Sharp, Ladas, and Gillette Blue. Going international...Shark, Treet and Derby are also solid choices.

My most used razors are a 37c, slim adjustable and a 6c #4 plate. The Gillette slim adjustable just does not like nacet blades, it tugs and is no bueno, but it works fine in the other two. This is a really fantastic tutorial video. I agree with some of your thoughts and disagree with others. But that is AOK but cause that is what wet shaving is all about. But you are absolutely spot on about how different razors and different blades and different beard types and different growth all are significant factors on how the razor/blade combo will perform on the shave. The more we share our experiences with one another the more new wet shavers will learn the tips and tricks to keep on shaving. Wilkinson, Asta, and Vostok are great for me as well. I have sensitive skin and really tough beard. Those may not be the sharpest of all the blades out there but man do they get the job done for me. Really great video brother keep up to good work.

I love watching reviewers on DE blades. It amazes me to hear reviews on blades that don't even make it on my top 20. Astra and Pol Silver are near the bottom of my rank order. The Nacet is in 2nd place, with Persona Platinum (Israeli Red) and Gillette 7 O'clock Sharp Edge (Yellows) tied for first.
I have exclusively been using the Rex Ambassador razor as my daily driver. I am tempted to add the Rex Konsol to my collection, but I fear the shave experience won't justify the cost. I am sure the Konsol is excellent, but how much greater can it be compared to the Ambassador?

  • @snowdogthewolf

I must have similar tastes. My favorite DE razors are Voskhod, Astra and Gillette 7 O'clock (in that order). I still shave with a straight about twice a week on average, but when I don't have the prep time, I'll skip straight to a safety razor. I couldn't believe how inexpensive DE razors were, so I kinda stocked up when I found my favorites. I must have well over a hundred various 100-razor sleeves of DE razors, most being of those three.
As close of a shave that I get from a safety razor, for the life of me I cannot understand why anyone would spend $25+ for a mere 4 (!!!) replacement cartridges for their multi-blade disposables when $8 gets you 100 DE razors (Astra).

I was originally gifted a 1967 Gilette Super Speed in 2016, bought 100 Astra Greens, tried a few shaves, and promptly left them both in a drawer for years. Recently, I started using them, simply because I owned them, and going through multiple disposable razor cartridges a week was exepnsive. After running out of the Astra Greens, I bought/tried Gilette Platinums, and have discovered some of what I thought was an issue with using a DE safety razor, was just the Astra Greens.

It’s too aggressive to use every day and you have to take your time, be careful, and respect it’s sharpness. For every day shaving…I use Nacet, Astra SP, and Voskhod. Nice review. It's always interesting how wet shavers differ on their favorite blades. My daily driver is the Rockwell 6S. The three blades I use the most are Nacet, Astra SP, and Wilkinson Sword (Saloon Pack India). Those 3 blades give me BBS shaves in 3 passes with no irritation. A wild card blade for me is the Wilkinson Sword made in Germany. But I haven't used it as often as my 3 favorites. The one blade that is overrated IMO is the Feather. While it is probably the sharpest I've used, it isn't as sharp or smooth on the 2nd and 3rd shaves. I've actually tested a Nacet blade for more than 6 shaves with no degradation in sharpness or smoothness. There's no way a Feather can match that for me. Anyway, we all shave with the blades that work best for our faces and beards. YMMV is the way it should be.

Can you do a worst blade video?
I have only used Astra based on a couple of your videos, unfortunately have since learned that they are part of the Gillett family. I have since bought Personna white wrapper based on you.
I have bought Wilkinson plastic DE razors to give away and my go kit; I have the metal one too and works well. I used Astra blades in both and no nicks. The plastic one still leaves a few stublies but definitely good to show friends that it’s better than a cartridge system.
I put a Wilkinson blade into the plastic one and OMG it completely destroyed my face. 5 nicks and when I put the alum block to my face it was on fire.
I haven’t nicked my face in 2 weeks ever since using the bloom water and a good soap, Proraso sensitive, no matter what DE razor I used with the Astra blade. The Wilkinson soap is garbage. The only time I nicked myself with an Astra blade, in my Henson AL13, was with the Wilkinson Soap, there is no silkiness with that soap.
I’m planning on charting how many shaves I get per blade thru the AL13 with the different blades I have; Astra red and blue, Persona platinum and white paper, Feather, RK, Phoenix, Gillett nacet and minora, Bic platinum, Treet, Derby, Zorrik, Shark, Wilkinson too as I’m a sucker for punishment. All with the same routine, soap and growth. I’ll post my results here if you’d like
So I hope you can to a video on your worst blades thru your journey. I think this would help everyone.

For a perfect lather you don't have to do that much. Just start with no water and gradually add more while lathering in your bowl or on your face.

I find the carbon blades from Treet to be both smoother and more efficient than stainless - namely Falcon and "Black Beauty". I live in the very humid SE USA and have never experienced any rust, whatsoever. If you are one to use a blade more than once, expect one less shave with a carbon example.

Yes Treet Carbon is nice but good for max of two shaves one on either side. I experience some irritation though
