    For some reason I was so disturbed with Olivia when she hugged Hugh, still looking at Steve. Nell clearly accepts Hugh into her arms but Olivia looks so unsatisfied with this sacrifice because she didn’t get all her kids to stay and I’m sure it was intended in case there would be a second season (even tho the director said there wouldn’t be). Anyway it made me feel suspicious cause it’s like she’d still haunt them anyway.

      You said it. She will haunt them. As will the House. When a family member dies they do haunt you. All the unresolved issues, all the things we didn't say, apologies we didn't get or didn't give - it stays with us. And a horror story turns the emotional ghosts into literal.

    The ending is so beautifully bittersweet but also frustrating because Hill House still won in the end. The Crain siblings didn't win at all. They just survived. The house still managed to manipulate someone, Hugh, into giving their life to it. Olivia, even as a ghost, is still under the influence of the House. Even Mrs. Dudley willingly fed herself to the house (and likely Mr. Dudley as well). The house still remains standing and victorious in some way by the time the last episode ends. That means any wandering visitor can fall victim to it. I doubt Steve will destroy the house because his family and others remain there (either by choice or not).
    I just hope season 2 focuses on a new cast because the Crains really deserve a break from all the horror, trauma, and tragedy. They deserve to be happy. So, I want a season 2 but at the same time I don't because it's just so masterfully depressing.

      Olivia, even as a ghost, is still under the influence of Hill House. I think Olivia staring at Steve is to express how she still desires to free her children from their "dream". She didn't let the kids go because she realized the truth. She only let them go because of the deal Hugh made with her/the house. A life for a life. It's very likely that the House still wants them, especially since Olivia still wants them. Even after Hugh's sacrifice, the kids are still leftovers. If there is a season 2, I hope it's not about the Crains anymore because they really need a rest from all the tragedy & trauma and they deserve to be happy and moved on.

    Theres something about the last scene where Steve is walking out that I cant get over... watching it the first time I was shaken. Just how perfectly its executed. It answers so much. The magnitude of the house's reach on the people that lived in it. But also Steve coming to terms with the reality of it all and accepting it all in that one shot. It's almost like everyone is looking up to him.. like hes the one that will protect them all.. while at the same time threatening him.. urging him to turn around. The people of hill house stand together... but the evil within will never cease to exist. It's my favorite scene of the entire show. While episode 6 is my favorite episode.

    Everyone hates Steve, but to me he's the sibling I understand and respect the most. As a first-born and older brother, I know what it's like to both (a) have to please your parents and (b) be a role model and protector for your younger sibling(s) - especially with the additional social pressures that come with being a guy (stay strong, show no emotion, be a provider, etc.). Steve and the rest of the family experienced extreme trauma (much of which Steve himself didn't directly see until adulthood), and he coped with it in the way he knew best: he attempted to rationalize it. In the same way we tell our younger siblings, "Don't worry, it was just a nightmare; everything is okay" Steve's authoring of books is an older version of that. Ghosts are unknown, but mental health issues aren't, and Steve's insistence that their family had psychiatric disorders (which, let's face it, they definitely did) was probably necessary. While Steve wasn't as emotionally vulnerable as some of the others, he did have his kind moments, such as giving Luke money. But in typical younger sibling fashion, everyone shat on him (but took his money anyway).
    And let's be frank: If you in real life knew a family that claimed to have seen ghosts, and you saw the toll it was taking on them, the *FIRST* person you'd side with would be the guy saying that these are serious mental health issues that need to be addressed ASAP (i.e., Steve).

    This was an unsatisfying ending for Nell. She has found peace (in a way), is no longer the “bent-neck lady,” saved all of her siblings, and is reunited with both of her parents. This seems all well and good, but she is still trapped forever in that dreary house with only her parents, Clara Dudley and her children, and the evil ghosts to keep her company. She will never see her husband again. She will never see any of her siblings again unless all of them happen to manage to get to the house right before they die, which seems unlikely. Maybe the good ghosts like Nell are able to create their own heaven in their minds within the house?

    • @rosesweetcharlotte
      @rosesweetcharlotte 3 роки тому +2

      Most of the ghosts aren't evil, just disturbed from being ghosts.
      Most of them just looked at the family. The only really malicious ones were Poppy and Olivia and even with them it's more that they were driven insane by the insane House.
      The sad thing is is that Nell and Hugh now get the fun job of distracting Olivia and Poppy for all of eternity.

    Beautifully symbolic. He fled the mansion and left Olivia to save the children and now, to save the children, he had to stay and be with Olivia. I suspect that's what he was hoping for. It's a win-win.
    He would've been fine just saving his kids again, but we see for 26 years that he had deluded himself into thinking Olivia is with him in spirit despite knowing full-well her spirit is bound to Hill House. He missed and loved her so very deeply. By promising to be with her forever, he not only saves his children, he gets to be with the woman he loves.

Hugh sacrificed all of that just for his kids.

    I loved this series and i loved bly manor, midnight mass and the midnight club, but i am yet to see another work from Flanagan that makes me feel the things I felt watching this show, the most close I've ever been with that has been midnight mass

      Yep I slowly watched the show awhile ago and it was so emotional..I rewatched it yesterday and man I feel even more feelings. The longing and loss really get you.

    Hugh was a great father. He never let the children know what their mother did that night. He buried the truth deep inside him and lived with it. In the end he sacrificed himself for his kids 😭😭😭 Had to go through so much pain.
