    Here is what I don't understand. Why would 0W-30 ever be a bad idea to run in an engine that recommends 5w-30 or 10w-30? Why wouldn't it always be better? Cause as far as my understanding goes.he W just means the viscosity in cold temperatures, it's "winter weight" or it's viscosity on start up. Since the oil will warm up rather quickly and become 30 weight, why wouldn't you want it as low viscosity as you can get on the start up to get that oil lubricating as fast as possible. Disclaimer: Yes I know, I still use the recommended oil type in my cars, I never go against Manufacturers instructions. I just want to understand the logic. But I am human and sometimes just do what you're told doesn't sit well, I need more information on the why!

    • @VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
      @VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM 4 роки тому +1

      Because in order to get the oil to 0w it has to have a lot of additives added to it. Those additives cause the oil to break down faster and not last as long. A straight 30 oil would have no additives to it. Which would last the longest but wouldn't be good for start ups. So additives are added, but they have some drawbacks. I use a 10w-30 on my old high millage truck because I only change the oil every year or sometimes year and a half. I don't put on a lot of miles but it goes long periods before a change so I need the oil to last a long time and not break down. I can get away with that though because it doesn't get super cold here on the West coast. I also don't change the oil any less than 10,000 miles (or a year or so, whichever is first). With the 10w-30 I can go 10,000 miles between changes because the oil is not breaking down as fast. My truck has probably 270,000 miles on it (odometer broke though so have to guess now), and runs like a champ using synthetic oil.

    • @rclv428
      @rclv428 4 роки тому +1

      @@VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM so wouldn't that mean that the additives molecules are breakng down and not the oil molecules? If the additives break down then wouldn't that just turn the oil back into 30 weight?

    • @Resistculturaldecline
      @Resistculturaldecline 21 день тому

      @@rclv428 Great question.
      For example 0w16, 0w20, 0w30, etc. are all 0w oils by birth. That's their true DNA identity, so to speak. It requires viscosity index modifiers to get them to flow like a 16, 20, 30 viscosity oil. Those additives break down with usage, and the oil is slowly returning itself back to its birth viscosity.
      The larger the spread between the 0 celsius and 100 celsius viscosity numbers (0w30 vs 10w30), the lower the film strength because of the viscosity modifiers requires to alter its flow behavior. A 0w30 for example, flows like a 30 @ 100c (more or less) but it doesn't have the film strength of a true born 30 oil.
      Given usage, mileage, and mechanical sheering of the molecules a 0w30 will eventually return itself to a 0w, while a 10w30 won't sheer below a 10. And all the while during those miles, the 10w30 still had a more robust film strength.

    It seems like you would want 0w-30 over 5w-30 no matter what climate. Obviously it's more beneficial in colder temps but you want that oil to flow asap, and both heat up to 30 weight.
    0w30>5w30 in every way?

    • @mgoogyi
      @mgoogyi 5 років тому +9

      No. Depends on your climate. 0w and 5w is about "in how cold can I start my car" and it's only important in very cold temps. In a country where -20 celsius is the lowest temp for 2 days in a year then you have no advantage from 0w. Furthermore at 0 celsius a thin 5w-30(ACEA A5 or C2) can beat a thick 0w-30 (ACEA A3/B3 or C3) easily.
      This test was at a very low temp where a thick 30 weighted (high cst at 100 celsius) 5w-30 was fighting a thin 30 weighted 0w-30. This 0w-30 beats this 5w-30 any temp from 100 celsius to -35 celsius. But for example a Motul eco-clean 5w-30 ACEA C2 would be very close to this mobil 1 0w-30.

      @@andriusra7398 You are wrong. 0w,5w,10w,etc. is about cranking and pumping viscosity at low temps like -35 and -30 celsius degree.
      It is about which is the lowest temp you can start your car.
      Every oil has a certain viscosity on 100 celsius which gives it a rating like 20,30,40,50,etc. This viscosity will be more and more as temp goes down. A 0w40 can be about 13 cst on 100 celsius, a thin 5w30 can be about 10 cst on 100 celsius. It is very likely that at 0 celsius still this 5w will have lower cst which means better cold start at 0 celsius.

    You definitely need it for Winnipeg's cold, dank climate. I have a relative who was brought up there (Irish immigrant) but then she moved to Squamish near Vancouver as an adult. She told me it was due in part to Winnipeg always being cold and damp and she found it dreary. People from here constantly blame the weather on their mood. I blame ourselves, ie. if only we let the weather depress us, it will. Here in Ireland, it's always raining so I think it's just cold and damp here, that's Ireland!

      I am currently using 0w30 for my honda city car here in the philippines, and suddenly from 5w30 changing to 0w30 after a year my cylinder head gasket fails. The mechanic told me that my 0w30 oil can handle too much heat and destroy my cylinder head gasket causing leaks of engine oil to my radiator .
      So my conclusion in this video, if the place is too cold the 0w30 wins over 5w30 but if the temperature rises upto 40 c .. its time for 5w30 do its role.

    Is 0w-30 okay to use in Southern California? We rarely have temperatures bellow 50 degrees fahrenheit but often average in the high 80s to 100 during the summer months? My car recommends 5w-30 but i put in Mobil 1 0w-30 two weeks ago as its "winter" and I wanted to see if the mileage actually improved... So far I am seeing about 1.5-2 mpg better which seems pretty good and saves me about a gallon or $3 per fill up.

      How will it destroy the engine if it only acts as a 0w oil in extreme cold? But I do agree that in his climate he should stick with at least the 5w30 year round recommendation or even 10w30 as most vehicles that recommend 5w30 their owners manuals usually say and/or show on a chart how 10w30 can be used if the temps will be above 0 degrees F. Since 0w30 is synthetic and a name brand it isn't cheap. Can probably save money on the oily buying another brand that should have 5w30 or 10w30 even synthetic.

    Hey man! I have a question for you. You have extremely cold weather where you live. How come your doors don't jam and your locks stop working? Do you use any kind of sprays and oils for the locks and for the rubber strips that are around the doors?

      volvosweden Hmm.. I have a Volvo XC70(2014) and doors and rubber lists get jammed.. Specially the right passenger door. That sometimes does not open and sometimes when it's open the lock does not lock the door so it's like being open... But after some time it starts working again normally. I think I have to get oil for the locks and some type of lubricant for the rubber lists... I'm so disappointed it's a pretty new car and this problems already.. And it's only like -5 Celsius right now here in Sweden where I live and the door gets jammed like that. Do you have any tip of what lubricant and oils that's the best for the locks and the rubber strips(seals)?

      The problem is it can be accomplished two ways, with a good base stock synthetic or by a less quality base stock and a lot of viscosity improvers. Oils using lots of viscosity improvers wear out faster. So some types of 0w30 could actually not perform as a 30 weight at operating temperature with fewer engine hours/miles/kms than a 5 or 10w30.

    First number is the viscosity for cold temp. Second number is viscosity at operating temperature. for warmer climates like the mid-west we rarely see temps lower than -10 F. So 5w30, 5w20,0w20 all are going to be acceptable. Remember the main reason of newer model vehicles "requiring" 0-20 was for CAFE regulations...not flow. Research EPA and CAFE oil regulations.
    Its always about the $$$.
