Nice one, man - That was a great synopsis of all the important points of filter set up. In industry every waste water treatment plant will be set up coarse, medium and fine mechanical filtration, biological media then chemical adjustment (if needed) so there is no reason that an aquarium filter or a pond filter would be any different. Industrial processes are set up to be as efficient as possible so an aquarium should be the same - it always baffles me how so many big channels still can't see the logic in proper filter set up so I hope this video gets good exposure. Keep up the good work.
Shootout to pondguru for helping us all to see this information way back when!!! I learned so much about filtration and engineering of them by being able to visually see many different filters and how they arrive/operate. Awesome video Bentley!! It's a great addendum video to your flow series. "How to filter setup"
I'm glad you find the videos useful. It's been a very expensive and time consuming series of videos to make (and I'm still going with it) so any time anyone appreciates the effort it is great. It's amazing how many people still never think about how the water flows through a filter or how the contents can be upgraded to make it much more efficient so I'm glad that Bentley has put forward the information in a more eloquent way than I've ever done, lol
I have an Aquael Hypermax 4500. I went a step further with this. This is a beast of a filter with two inlets and outlets and a pre-filter. I did originally use the Pre-filter (sponge) and put sponges in the bottom tray. The rest was bio media. I have just installed separate pre-filters/boosters on both inlets. The cheap Sun Sun HW 603's. I had to mess around with the tubing connections as the Hypermax and Sun Sun are different diameters but got there in the end! I used two of the stock Sun Sun sponges and added my own fine sponge and some filter floss. It slows down the overall flow a bit. But the Hypermax is such a beast it's still overfiltering the tank. The Hypermax is now filled with Sera Siporax, Matrix, Substrat Pro and Maxspect Bio-spheres. I even put some Siporax I had left over in the Hypermax's large pre-filter compartment. But not too much in there as I want good flow as the water enters the main filter. I am planning on cleaning the small Sun Sun Boosters every two weeks or so. Hopefully the Hypermax will only need to be opened two or three times a year. We shall see...
Have the Oase 850. Pre filter 45 ppi and the internal compartment filled with the coarse foam. Only service/clean the pre filter every few months … NEVER clean the coarse. Water is crystal clear and remains so x 3 years. Great filter, tons of bio, low maintenance.
Ended up my experiments with eheim classic 600 full of Sera siporax and Sera prefilter attached to it. Inlet is eheim prefilter which I clean once a week during water change. Sera prefilter probably once a few months. I find my zen of filtration. :)
I recently got a Oase 250 pro after my fluval 406 started leaking from the main head unit. Yes I changed the casket with not one but two new seals. It kept on leaking water, and yes I assure if was seal correctly.
Thank you, Bentley, I was able to understand that. I use a HOB filter but I do not use the filter cartridges. I cut filter media to fit the canister of the HOB. What would be the best choice of media to use? I can not afford to replace the HOBs with the type of filters you are talking about in this video.
Is there a reasonably affordable option of big foam sheets? I do not have a canister filter, but I do have a sump on my 125 and I would like to be able to put at least a few sponges in series vertically before my ceramic (and other) media. But every time I price it it's like a $200 thing, so I don't bother.
Rather than filling chambers with the larger upright pads. Try using filter batting in the zones between Chambers to catch all your particulates like this: amzn.to/4aQvroi
I have the Fluval 407. It has a different configuration than these ones shown here. With the coarse and medium sponges all along the intake, would you still put the additional sponges on the bottom?
You can put an additional sponge in the bottom tray, but I think they already provide one and with the way that the '07 series in general is designed, it usually doesn't need more sponge than what it comes with as long as you're servicing it at a reasonable rate.
I also have a fluval, the 307 the bottom tray, has the black course sponge and floss on top, it has three trays and my middle tray and top tray have ceramics, but I also put some floss on the top tray, is this a good method, if not what would you change, great video by the way.
@@BentleyPascoe Tbh I juice it up with Purigen. Top tray of my Fluval 407 with one 5.5 ounce Chemi-pur Green pouch + one 100 ml Purigen bag in each of the two compartments.
Hey Bentley, I recently saw your talk on idiot rainbowfishes and I was wondering if a single out of place rainbowfish would have a significant impact on the single species effect you were talking about. Suppose you have 20 praecox and a single rhadinocentrus ornatus
One of your best instructional videos, Bentley... keep them coming... excellent! Whenever I need a chuckle I re-watch your Flourish Sucks video.... classic Bentley! ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=bentley+flourish+

This was a great, simple refresher.

I love the 45ppi prefilters. Switched to them a while back
Love my Oase thermo.
It's all about understanding the flow of your filter, same for a HOB any power filter really. Thanks for sharing your experience and wisdom with us.
Thanks, just started using my first canister today 😊❤

Thank you for always honest explaining,
But I have question about oase biomaster air issue problem, how I can solve it.
Thank you
@@ahmadsaidi8996 you mean the air purging often from canister or when you go to service the prefilters?
From the canister
@@ahmadsaidi8996 regular maintenance has minimized it for me, but not completely stopped
Very helpful. Is the logic the same for HOBs: follow the water flow?
Precisely!

I just got Oase 250 biomaster i used food grade plumbing lube on seals, but you could try petroleum jelly.

What’s this about not using charcoal in a planted tank? I’ve been using Chemi-Pur Green and I’m pretty happy with it.
If you like it, use it. I choose not to. Just my choice
