Kitesurfing hydrofoiling vs IMOCA 60
Whilst in Cozumel, Mexico on a Slingshot hydrofoil photoshoot we met up with Alex Thomson Racing to set up a race, kite alongside the boat and go for a sail. We didn't get that much wind but we had loads of fun!
Big thanks to Delille Sports for helping make this happen.

The boards are really cool for sure...but that boat! The sheer power is just awesome. What a monster.
I saw that boat in Portsmouth, UK last year. She was about 50 meters aways from our boat in the marina so I took the dingy and paddled up to it.. But only when I got close to it about 10ft I understood how special that boat is: state of the art coms/electronics (visible from the back), HUGE sails, carbon fibre all over, and the size... BIG! Just breathtaking..
It's a very impressive machine, every last detail is thought about and made out of carbon
Ace! The power to weight advantage on a foil Kite is obvious, but very entertaining to watch, good sports all! 🤟
Fred killed it. Awesome content Sam. My two favorite sports together.
Nice to see the Slingshot Rally’s being the weapon of choice. Only just started foiling with mine.
Simply AWESOME!!
TOTALLY INCREDIBLE !!!
how can you not love Alex Thompson?
Impressive, Well done.
Amazing!
Very exciting!
:-D that was fun to watch ! Great clip.
Looks like guerrilla warfare to me.
Greetings from Bodrum Turkey
Awesome footage your video
1:24 , that neat camera switch !
Some real skill seen here by everyone involved.
Gracias por visitar a las playa de Cozumel Mexico
Yes! Go Fred!
Underwater the slingshot foilboard looks like a Hammerhead shark !
awesome video!
sick! I loved the spot!
Cool video
I would give my right nut to sail on that yacht (as long as it can be safely reattached later).
Please do a round 2 in above 25knts!
🙏
What is the purpose of those lateral "booms" in the Imoca 60?
If you're asking about the things attached to the base of the mast: they are spreaders or the equivalent thereof. IMOCA's have rotating masts and traditional spreaders wouldn't work.
красавцы!!
Christ... i got into the WRONG line of work. I can't imagine THIS being my office & daily grind (pun intended).
Here i sit, behind a big desk and 3-monitors, doing production-control, purchasing, materials & capacity planning for an oil & gas service company, while you all get to "work" on the water everyday.
I really went the wrong direction with my career. Weeps.
Awesome video! Is it possible to know who plays the soundtrack? It's a pretty cool song! Thanks in advance
I wouldn't risk getting so close to those deadly foils sticking so far out of the hull. If he fell off the board, he would be cut in half.
Kiteboards win easily! As I expected, no contest at all - the big zillion dollar yacht is still tons of mass and even with the tilting keels and foils it is dragging a huge amount of surface area through the water. I predict a few of these foiled ocean racers will sink or founder at sea after the foils break off.
Well, let's try that race again over the atlantic. This whole race is a joke. You are comparing a Porsche to a Volkswagen.
@@jessicalouissaint122 well said. I mean it’s more of a F1 v Hyundai. Ones designed for a day fun the others designed to beat down 20-30 foot swells in the Southern Ocean in 50 - 60+ Knt winds regularly. Moronic really!
Like they said with higher wind the boat would beat them every day especially in the waves of the southern ocean. Also during a Vendee Globe a few years ago this exact boat had the starboard foil break off and it still came in second so the Imoca 60 can actually sail just fine without foils also it is slower of course.
I don’t understand how Alex Thomson. Can single hand such a beast
How is it even possible to single-hand a boat that big at speed? It is set up for a crew of 8-10.
@@epistte IMOCA 60's are designed to be sailed short handed on long distance races. They can be comfortably sailed by a crew of 2/3, however to sail one solo you definitely need to know what you are doing.
@epistte Alex Thomson did the Vendee globe single handed on that. Got some amazing fast legs in.
That´s why the boat is black, every point to hot to rest
@@SailingSquib The new one is black/pink, whats your explanation for the pink parts? xD
nice mate!
The size of Fred’s foilboard?
3'6 Slingshot Dwaft Craft Micro
Ist das ein geiles Boot.
Is this ther new or old Hugo Boss?
It's the current Hugo Boss, the new one comes out this summer
Really like the boss could keep up with a foiling kite. How about a sailgp F50 cat?
I am up for the racing a F50 cat :D
@@SamLight Me to! Now that would be a race :)
windpower: it works
I swear I used to ser giant sails in the long island sound
I would not want to get my kite caught in his mast.
Need to compete The Maxi Edmond de Rothschild
These boats are to different to race together. It really depends of the weather. If you do the same race in the ocean with 3 meters of waves and 30 kt of wind Alex Thomson and his crews would win.
Shits not foiling tho not enough wind.
I´d like to see you do the Vendee Globe on you aqua skateboard..... Nice toy though
Hahaha, yea it would be tricky to sleep on my aqua skateboard. They are both fun toys made for very different adventures..
Only 50 knots of wind? That man is a sailing giant. I simply don't see 50 knots in this video.
Am i the only one to notice the epic fail at 2:36 ?
Wtf so jello
great video, but kitefoil will be always faster than boats.
I enjoyed this but why does all the footage from the drone look computer generated with ‘real’ footage superimposed. Are you using some kind of filter cause to me this all looked fake.
Fickle Phunk I think your hardware might be the reason
My hardware is an iPad Pro. As it’s one of apples most advanced peices of hardware I doubt that’s the problem
@@ficklemedia8733 Might have OK (ish) specs for a tablet but it's hardly a powerhouse or cutting edge video tech, the footage looks OK to me on a high spec desktop PC and decent monitor.
popuptoaster complete bollocks. This whole sequence with the race is fake. Strange that the maker of the film hasn’t replied to my comment.
Sorry FP but I gotta side with the others, footage looks fine on my sony tv and my HP desk top monitor. Maybe that ole gray mare ain't what she used to be.
