actually, besides "Mr Excitement",Wilson was called "Black Elvis".When a reporter asked Elvis about it,he said "Well i guess that makes me White Jackie"
Interestingly, another brilliant talent was also dubbed "The Black Elvis." Namely Jimi Hendrix, due to his gyrating, electrifying stage act in his early years, especially 1967-68. But Hendrix tired of that routine fast. He was influenced a lot by Elvis, but not in terms of his sound or vocal style or his stage moves. Chuck Berry, T-Bone Walker, and others factored into Hendrix's "act" and guitar style. What impacted Hendrix the most about Elvis was the energy that he saw Elvis create and how Elvis was energized by his audience. Hendrix saw that power as a teenager and it really stuck with him. But Hendrix took it way beyond Elvis, and all but abandoned his tried and true stage routine by 1969, much of which he acquired from oberving the r&b greats he toured with as a backup man on the Chitilin' Circuit, including the likes of the Isleys, Jackie Wilson, Wilson Pickett, Motown acts, and so many others. In place of this routine he delved deeper and deeper into the music, and his entire aura and aesthetic gave him even greater power to touch his audience and his listeners. He took it places that Elvis and the r&b greats could never dream of. Maybe John Coltrane, Roland Kirk, Charles Parker, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon or Miles Davis et al from the jazz world laid the groundwork and had an inkling, but Jimi was an Afrofuturist before the term was even coined, connecting the lines from the slave ship to the space ship. These connections are often ignored, but they give us a deeper appreciation for the arist and their cultural productions.
I saw a lengthy interview with him here on You Tube and he said Elvis helped him early in his career by announcing Jackie's appearance at an LA night club to draw a crowd. They remained friends. Jackie had a lot of respect for him. It might have been the 20/20 interview .
I just love this performance of Jackie Wilson. Red suit, rocking beat, vibrant dance, soulful singing! Just the whole darn package. A complete artist and entertainer was he. Jackie (the man) Wilson! I love him.
Would love to see a Biopic of Jackie Wilson. It's an interesting tale and would shine the spotlight on him once again. Such an influential man should not be forgotten.
Sixty years ago when I was nine years old, my favorite singers were Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Roy Orbison, and Smokey Robinson. They still are but over the years, Jackie's supplanted Sam at #1. Can't nobody sing like Jackie Wilson!
My mother and father spent a night with him at the old Cave Club on the east side in Vancouver, BC, Canada. A guy insulted my mother, so my dad made "quick work of him," and knocked him out. Jackie had just finished performing and saw my dad 'knuckle' this guy out. He took a liking to my father and invited my mother and father to join him and his entourage at his table where he bought them drinks and acted like a real gentleman. His music is great. Iong live Jackie.
Those of us who were teens in the 60's were so privileged to have some of the best entertainers and music of the century. I remember him well as an extremely talented man, who unfortunately suffered a severe heart attack while doing his high energy act at the old Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in 1975. He suffered major brain damage and lived in a semi comatose state till his passing in 1984.
I remember seeing Jackie Wilson on TV doing this he was just fantastic no one could ever take his place he had so much talent and rhythm you couldn't stop watching this man he had everything going for him it's a shame his love affairs almost got him killed some woman shot him in the stomach some place on Broadway in New York City it's so sad how he wound up in a hospital probably with any money before he died but I'll tell you his music lives on forever you always want to listen to it I have all his CDs and DVDs to listen to just an amazing person I give him five stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐💯👍❤️❤️❤️
Saw Jackie Wilson many times at the old Regal Theater, at 47th St. and South Park Ave (now M L King Drive), in Chicago. He was truly "Mr Excitement" -- the man simply radiated energy and he drove the crowds wild. He was always the final act because, of course, who could follow that?
I love that tidbit about my home town. I miss growing up in Chicago. They moved the Regal to off Stony Island by that White Castle before Regal it closed some years back. I always heard it was in a different location at first but I didn’t know it was 47th and King Drive.
@@ladyt_ismyname6643 Ms. Favray -- I"m glad my comment reminded you of the old days in Chicago, and at the old Regal Theater. When I was going there frequently (1964 - 1968), it was on South Park Ave, renamed ML King drive in '68 or '69. As I recall, at some time the Regal moved into the old Avalon Theater bldg, but I'm not positive on this. By the way: I am white, and the crowds, as you might imagine, were -- well, there were often 2000 people in the audience, but I was never made to feel unwelcome, or even looked at funny. The whole thing seemed to be, "If you're here for the music, then that's the only credential you need" -- I was just one of the thousands who came for one of the finest musical experiences on earth.
Jackie Wilson is one of my favorite singers. First time I heard him was in 1961 singing, (lonely teardrops). He puts on a show that no one wants it to end. I was very sad the day he passed away. He was better than Michael Jackson. And that says a lot about him.
Absolutely fantastic! He inspired Michael Jackson to sing and dance during his whole carrier, ... and MJ always thanked him all his life ... What a great performers!!! :-)
This man Jackie Wilson what a great dancer. His son looks just like him. Saw his son in a concert a couple of years ago. So good looking just like his dad. Yea for the 60's.
Between Jackie and James Brown most particularly, we can see quite clearly from where Michael Jackson found inspiration for many of his dance moves and stage antics.
yes, you can see a little bit of MJ in him. The same smooth natural silk thread that you just can't explain. James was a little more raw/rugged and deliberate in his movement. Michael Jackson is unique in that he absorbed influences from so many greats. Some we don't even know.
Happy birthday to the best vocalist of the modern era mr.Jackie Wilson, man I listen to your music almost everyday, I keep this legend alive in my heart man
I Love and Cherish The Music of Mr. Jackie Wilson and Elvis Presley immensely. Both had the undefinable Performance knack in truckloads. And leave Musical Legacies well worth studying.🎤🎸🎹🎼❤🌹B.W.
Amen! I understand he had been in a coma (after heart attack) for some time before death. Was financially troubled at the end. MJ paid for the funeral.
So I had the privilege of seeing this video back before there was a UA-cam, heck before the internet was a household thing on PBS and recorded on a VHS tape. I am so glad that youtube came along and that I didn't order the complete set of digitally remastered discs for a donation of $129
Its 2019 I didn't know who Jackie Willson was , my favorite song was nightshift by the commadors that this time. I knew who Marvin Gaye was. I am so glad the commadors leaded me down this road.
one of the top 5 voices of all time. This guy is in a class by himself. This video is circa 1971. Check him out when he was a young man singing Danny Boy. None betta
I thank the lord right now today. For people like this that kept use together as a people a unit through songs and messages like this. Thank you soooo much jackie Wilson and god bless your family.

The live performances from the 1960s and 1970s are the best quality you'll ever get from now and forward.
Michael made it no secret that Jackie Wilson and James Brown were his greatest influences.
The man with the moves and the voice, love him.

Yeah, that would be tough though

love to see his son Bobby Brooks Wilson make a movie about his father and be extremely interesting very enjoyable
Bruno Mars in the lead.
Staring Bruno Mars.
No performer today could pull this off. Notice that he is actually singing while executing spectacular moves.
What a man. RIP.
His son Bobby is also talented
Sorry, but that's not true

What do you think about Bruno Mars in the lead in his biopic?

Jackie Wilson is INCOMPARABLE!!!!!!!!!! There is no one before or since that can compare to this dynamic, soulful singer--PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!
I can say the same of Elvis
Its a fact that Elvis and Jackie were very best of Friends.
@@debioberster8781Elvis was a damn thief who ripped off black talent. Please
