  • "Male Greater Roadrunners bring twigs to the female, which she fashions into a compact platform with a nest cup about 4 inches deep. A male that pauses for too long in his stick-gathering may get reminded with a whining call from his partner, prompting him to get back to work. The finished nest can reach over 17 inches in diameter and 8 inches high, lined with leaves, grasses, feathers, smaller sticks, snakeskin, and flakes of cattle and horse manure. The parents may continue to work on the nest during incubation and build up the sides of the nest as the chicks grow. Pairs sometimes reuse a nest from a previous year.

Had a nest, 4 chicks. Two adults. One adult vanished leaving other to collect food. The single adult ended up first eating two, than the other two chicks. Blood & feathers remained. Conjecture: two much work finding food ie 1 adult. We were heartbroken as had.watched, made photo journal, and loved the family. 🌑

Roadrunners are the chickens of the desert. Very friendly and tame. Smart and affectionate with an amazing vocabulary

Cuckoo birds! Roadrunners are really funny to watch and interact with. Though the ones in our property aren't as "tame" as yours.

We see a few of these mainly in late summer months here in Southeastern Ozarks. Never sure if they migrate or what

i always wondered how the babies ate dried up lizards. now i know why the parents leave their beak in the baby so long, because i saw water running out while the lizard was in baby's mouth. i learned something today. thank you...btw, now i know they make MANY different sounds. i THINK they are mimicking other birds....doves, quail, and others.
