  • So I purchased my first laser for my knife sharpening business and here is my latest update on how it's going.
    If you have been thinking about pulling the trigger on an LP4 today is a good day as it's on sale for Prime Day.

    Personal safety is often over looked with lasers but should not be. Laser light bounces off in unpredictable directions & will destroy your vision. Toxic smoke is also a real issue as you pointed out. Modifications to my laser cutter took weeks to design & build but there was no way I would even turn it on without these modifications. I designed an air intake system to interrupt laser light to deteriorate laser to tolerable levels. With all safety systems in place there is 6.5 mph air speed over the cutting surface. I still need to clean my mirrors & lenses often. If you have system design concerns I will do my best to help. The problem with glasses is if you turn around the light can bounce off the back side of the glass directly into your eye. Thanks for sharing, your tips are really helpful to me.

      When I do the tumblers I make sure I stay on the opposite side of the table I may just make some flat black panels to block the light. Agree you have to be safe when dealing with lasers.

    Hey Paul, I put a cup magnet on a 10° wood block I made. This lets me flatten the main bevel of the knife. I had an issue on my personal Spyderco Manix before I made the 10° block. It was a block lettering completely filled. The focus changed enough from the spine to the edge of the knife that the engraving went from dark grey/black to brown toward the edge.

    Cool, could you please share the settings you normally use for engraving stainless steel?

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  6 місяців тому +1

      These were powder coated so it was just removing the paint . Do you want the settings for black letters on stainless or what I used for these tumblers

      I was talking about those black Detective Kelemen engravings. They are pretty cool. But actually now that I watched it again I noticed you are using those laser engraving sprays. Are those sprays easy to use? Is it easy to clean the remaining paint from the knives? Don't you lose the polish from the knives?

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  6 місяців тому +1

      I don't use the sprays at all we just did a test on one knife. I use 100P 50 Depth and 4k on most knives gives me a nice black engraving pretty fast if it a super steel or I want it really deep 8k will give a very solid back that's deep but I generally use 4K On the Xtool laser I use 100 power 10 speed 300 LPI for deep black engravings

      The spray are super easy and wash off with water the only downside is they and expensive but the 2W 1064 at 4K and 8K on the Laser Pecker 4 gives great black engravings the sprays give a tiny bit more of a shiny black but are definitely not needed to get a good black engraving. The sprays also only work on the 450 NM laser so I was showing that mostly for people who have a LP model that does not have the 1064 2W IR built in to it@@danielricardomarin

    so a LaserPecker 4 or an Xtool F1 ? i chose the xtool f1 mainly cause of the enclosure.

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  7 місяців тому +1

      The enclosure is small and for knives it's not a big help I went to a much bigger enclosure for my LP4 I have a recent video on it. I also now have the Xtool S1 with the 1064 nm and the 40w lasers and it's fully enclosed. The Xtool F1 and the LP4 are almost the same exact thing. There are things I like about each that are a little different I very much like both machines. I like Xtool software a little more but I also love the simplicity and versatility of the LP4 - It's been great for engraving knives. The S1 is still pretty new for me but so far I really like it as well.

      LP4 just did a bunch of updates but some people have had issues with them so I’m holding off it’s supposed to go faster now after the update but I’m waiting till it’s been well tested because I use mine for business. I also own the XTool S1 40 Watt and can say they are far ahead of LP in the software development area. They have a new design software I’m BETA testing and it’s awesome. The are really #1 at the moment I got my LP4 for a great price because I was a kickstarter backer early on but if I was in the market now or if you are I would have to say go with XTool the are definitely the leader in great easy to use lasers with excellent software. Laser Pecker is still good to but the size of XTool shows in their ability to address issues fast. Many players getting into the game the one I would love to try is a WECREATE laser I have heard great things about them and their focus system is really innovative. Would love to see them get a 1064 module for metal.
