I have honestly never seen the connection to gen 1, but I think it's pretty interesting, especially with the Pokemon. I remember people constantly comparing gen 1 and 5 Pokemon, but not these guys (especially ralts). Gen 3 really feels like Pokemon settled it's its format from then on.
Yeah I love a lot of the Hoenn Pokémon but it’s hard for me to not compare most of them to their Gen 1 counterparts. At least they aren’t all like that
I remember comparing gen 1 and 3 as well. In fact I myself have never heard of gen 5 comparisons to gen 1 I'll be honest with ya, maybe it was true they "settled" on a style from them on, but gen 2 was not only much smaller than the previous one but felt extremely novel at the time. It may seem crazy seeing as there's so so sooo many gens now but even back then people were already saying stuff like "Game freak running out of ideas bleh bleh" TLDR: It was the third generation dude. There was not a lot to compare to so anything that was in any way similar was bound to stand out
I like how you not only talk about the games as if they just came out. But I also love how you let us know what was popular in the world at the time as well. Really puts a new perspective on the games for me.
Fun fact (and this also applies Emerald): As soon as you step foot into a new location with preset berries, if you ignore or miss them, there is a chance they will permanently delete themselves due to failing to "replant". So, it is advised to pick up berries whenever you see them so a type of berry plant doesn't go "extinct" in Hoenn. Sure, certain NPCs will give you a berry, yet that is only once per day. Plus, this is does not account for the cartridge battery running dry and needing to be replaced with a new one and the Berry Glitch in Ruby and Sapphire.
It's fun listening to how you considered yourself too old as a freshman and then DEFINATELY too old as a Junior because I had a similar but somewhat different experience. Gen 3 came out when I was in middle school and 4 hit when I was a Sophmore in Highschool. Gen 3, little 13 year old me was too old for Pokémon, but my sophomore year I had opened back up to more kiddish games because "fuck you, they're fun" and so dove right into Gen 4 when it came out.
Playing Sapphire when it was new was a very unique experience for me. I had just finished 4th grade at the time, and I distinctly remember Pokemon as a whole falling out of style around this time. While the first 2 gens were games I played alongside friends, gen 3 was more of a solo experience since Pokemon was seen as kind of a social faux pas. A lot of kids back then thought Gen 3 would be the last games because it just wasn't 'cool' to like Pokemon anymore. I actually suffered a bit of burnout around the time too, didn't really get back into the series until Platinum and HGSS.
Haha that immediately made me think of the one trainer in Morty’s gym on Gold/Silver who talks about how he and his Haunter trained through all of the seasons together.
Ruby was my first pokemon game. Tbh Pokemon didnt catch my attention until Gen 3 came out. Something about the designs just stood out to me. Tho Emerald is undoubtedly the GOAT of Gen 3.
I moved to Alaska (for a time) around the release of these games. Those sunny beaches and tropical environs kept me warm during those long cold winter nights... I also managed to carry my original team though each successive generation until finally returning home to Hoenn in the Gen VI remakes, that's where I ended up retiring from my own personal pokémon journey. Gen III Forever!
I've been playing Pokemon since Red and Blue. Until SwSh I ended up loving each generation of Pokemon. For the longest time I've never been able to single out a favorite but over the past couple of years my nostaglia for Sapphire and Ruby has really deepened and I'd say that Pokemon Sapphire is my favorite Pokemon game ever. I picked Pokemon Sapphire because sapphire is my birthstone. My top 5 Hoenn Pokemon are: Camerupt (I love it so much that it is my second most favorite Pokemon in the entire series), Grumpig, Claydol, Cacturne, and Banette. I distinctly remember when I first started the game being sorely disappointed that it did not have a day/night cycle like Crystal. I was even more disappointed when we couldn't go back to Kanto/Johto after beating the Elite 4. I love the music in this game so much. That legendary 7/10 that Gamespot gave it for too much water and too many trumpets feels like a personal attack against me. Hoenn's starters are ok. I don't have any strong feelings towards them and I don't have a favorite start among this trio like I do with others. They're all just super well designed. Sapphire is probably the Pokemon gmae I played the most and I will get into that more when we get to Platinum.
Even though the nostalgia for these games isn’t there for me, I think they’re still really fun games. It’s a nice middle era between classic Pokémon and the DS/3DS ones. Also, nice top 5 list. I always felt like I SHOULD like Banette more than I do.

The intro to ruby/sapphire is so nostalgic that my finger twitched to go press A to skip the intro and load my save. There are a lot of fun things to learn about this gen from listening to the creator's interviews. For example, he really wanted this game to feel completely new and refreshed since people apparently complained that gold/silver was too similar to red/blue. The only reason we see any of the old pokemon is for balancing reasons; there wasn't enough variation in the new stock to justify a complete separation from the oldies.
@@Paraspectre Parallels are definitely there! It was meant to be the red/blue of the new times, new tech, new graphics. If everything went as planned, there wouldn't even have been trading from the previous games into ruby/sapphire because it was meant to be it's own soft reset. Many of the designs reflect this too as he tried to make pokemon that pushed a humanoid form and made people question what could be a pokemon. It's all very fun stuff to look into if you're interested, especially the thoughts behind torchic's evolution line.
I do feel bad for having negative feelings towards the Hoenn region. I was 16 in 2002 and that was an extremely difficult year for me as my grandmother painfully and suddenly passed away, when Ruby and Sapphire released it felt like I was denied something sentimental since I couldn’t trade the Pokémon I had caught and raised while she was alive. I was resentful until I was able to inject those original cartridge saves over the 3DS eShop copies. Lately I’ve been trying to give RSE a second chance.
I can see that being difficult to get into the games if you’re going through a hard time too. I feel like my childhood mons are forever stuck on Stadium 2
As someone who was a kid during gen3 I do have the nostalgia for this generation. I appreciate the take of someone who was around during the original pokemania. Nice videos dude I hope you blow up in subscriber's just one will have to do for now through.

Yes! Another Gardevoir fan! Gardevoir is my favorite Pokémon because of how elegant yet mysterious it looked as well as being a powerhouse. I did not find out what the internet did with Gardevoir until almost a decade after first encountering and having it as my favorite. It is saddening and darkly sweet yet disturbing that it will attempt to create what is essentially a black hole to save its trainer. Yet, Mewtwo, which should technically be more powerful, does not have its powers exaggerated to that degree.
Ah Ruby, my first game. I still revisit Ruby and Sapphire often, and I ended up taking up Emerald speedrunning during lockdown. :) It's nice to take a look at it from the perspective of a younger self again.
I skipped Ruby and Saphire at first as well, until a friend of mine and I started playing the original Red/Blue because we wanted to be cool like the kids in Megaman NT Warriors (yeah). Then the remakes came out and that kickstarted Phase 2 of my Pokémon love and I went back to Ruby/Saphire.

Yeah I would agree with that but I’m not sure why. I will say that when I was getting the Groudon art to show, it’s literally the exact same pose. Crystal’s pose of Suicune is unique to that cover.
Nah, they had a decent excuse back then. The Pokémon were programmed so differently between Gen 2 and 3, it would've been a major hassle to faithfully translate all the data over.

Yeah, gen 3 was when Pokémania was truly over and it shows. Didn't play them at all, honestly. Just played Emerald when I was 27 or so. The connection to gen 1 is interesting, it felt as if gen 2 was basically gen 1+, but gen 3 was the 1st time Game Freak made a game to stand on its own feet similar to gen 5 later.
You _would_ like Blaizeken Blaizeken started the trend of furry starters. Starter pokemon who evolve to look _exactly_ like a person wearing a suit. Its out of control! That grass kitty from Paldea, who evolves into a dirty furry, it broke my heart. I wanted a giant, leaf cat so bad. I blame blaizeken for all of it! Blaizeken was so popular, the pokemon execs went "wow, kids really love these stupid, furry-looking pokemon, who are basically just a person in a costume, clucking like a chicken. We need to have _way_ more of these. Anthropomorphic starter pokemon in every generation!" We need a cleansing fire 🔥 😫
Here to remind everyone that TamashiHiroka claimed that Gen III told a story about Japanese politics when it merely took creative influence from those ideas. The game did not make a political statement or tell stories about real Japan.

Yeah I would agree with that but I’m not sure why. I will say that when I was getting the Groudon art to show, it’s literally the exact same pose. Crystal’s pose of Suicune is unique to that cover.
What’s everyone’s home console and why?
I herd yu liek Mudkips
A real movie buff nice!
The edgelord chooses for the fav 10 pokemon LOL. idk if any are on my top 10 lol. glad u like them tho
great stuff!
:-)
I'm sure game freak intentionally did not allow gen 2 to 3 connectivity because they already planned fire red and leaf green.
Nah, they had a decent excuse back then. The Pokémon were programmed so differently between Gen 2 and 3, it would've been a major hassle to faithfully translate all the data over.
@@lilylopnco I felt the same at first, but after I saw Goppier make a home device and did the transfer by himself proves it's possible. This is what I watched. ua-cam.com/video/inMbtwmVlKQ/v-deo.html
@@RudyGGames Well sure but at this point we have 20+ years of the games existing, with hindsight and newly accessible technology to aid making a transferring process possible
I wouldn't doubt if Game Freak had to decide between adding features and put the time and effort together to hack together an adapter
@@lilylopnco I feel like randomizing stuff like abilitites, EVs, IVs, etc. wouldn't have been that difficult. But I don't know anything about programming so maybe not
hey, do you need an editor? i find your videos, specifically the writing, intresting and worthwhile, but you seem to be struggling with some of technical aspects of video editing and presentation.
if you're open to it, id like to experiment in working together.
I’ll be the first to admit that there’s plenty I still don’t know about editing since I’m basically self taught, but I’d still prefer to handle it all myself at my pace. I feel like I could absolutely use some help with the audio portion of it. That stuff doesn’t click with me.
I will not stand for absol slander
Did I slander it? I don’t even remember what I said. I like Absol though…
Thank you
*too much water*
I was waiting for this!
No love for my boy Wailord
Wailord eh? I’d say I’m neutral on it.
What about the shiny version? Big pink?
He looks so happy to be there.
7.8/10

26:35 - Your favourite pokemon is... Sandshrew... not Parasect...
new here? welcome to the channel!
its a mascot, not his favorite lol
I had a handful of name/logo ideas when I started this of Pokémon I like and Parasect was the one I chose to go with ☺️
Yeah, gen 3 was when Pokémania was truly over and it shows.
NOICE
Even as a kid, I couldn't understand why types were still restricted to physical or special in gen 3. The limits of the old system were so staggering.
I assumed the game internally classifies moves based on their name/assumed category 😂 Didn't matter anyway during in-game battles.
You _would_ like Blaizeken
Blaizeken started the trend of furry starters.
Anthropomorphic starter pokemon in every generation!"
We need a cleansing fire 🔥 😫
Blaziken is cool but nowhere near a favorite Pokémon of mine
Very 2016 comment
@djason338 the problem has gotten much worse since then
Gamefreak knows that they get more "fan art" if the starters become Furries.
No Absol as a top contender??? Interesting...
I would personally put Absol in a B tier. It’s good.
@@Paraspectre it's strong and have an amazing design and lore and surprisingly no evolution or baby/pre Evo either
Best gen pog
Here to remind everyone that TamashiHiroka claimed that Gen III told a story about Japanese politics when it merely took creative influence from those ideas. The game did not make a political statement or tell stories about real Japan.
