You are a good representation of a Jiu Jitsu student! I always say "The only time I would ever get hurt was rolling with an over zealous White belt. Never got hurt rolling with a higher belt".
I'm a 43 year old white belt, have been training for almost two years but only 5 months of rolling twice a week. Almost got discouraged but not giving up yet! Thank you for the inspiration!
44 year old white belt with a few months of twice a week- I know the feeling! I try to focus on learning technique over aggro-rolling to avoid injury and not putting false expectations on my progress
I apologize for my late response as I am still catching up with the responses. I think twice a week for a new student is fine for the first 6 months. If your schedule allows add a third class. Thank you for watching!
I've got to tell you, I'm brown belt that's 54, and what you said, "it's funny how well jiu jitsu works on people that don't do it," is what keeps me going. That's what I enjoy about your channel.
This is just like my current club - they're so good. Really generous guys and gals. Have just been back after three years out, and it's been wonderful. I never liked the "let them overcommit their strength and then complain behind their back" approach. You show wonderful patience - I'd train with you any day. And good on Chris for letting you post this. That shows real humility.
There are some white belts where trying to explain things to them is like bouncing things off a stone wall... The more physically gifted they are the worse it is. I told one guy today 5 times to relax... calm down. I tried explaining to him that if he just slowed down he'd see all the holes I was giving him. He wasn't listening at all... I ended up telling him that I didn't want to roll with him any more - more because I was annoyed at how pig headed he was being. But on reflection I wonder if I should just crush the hell out of him mercilessly and forget trying to get through to him. I can handle him fine but I'm somewhat worried that he'll do something daft like try backstepping out of a locked half guard and screw up his knees... or do something spazzy with me. Like you, I'm older - my primary focus is on my own longevity of practice.
Thank you for commenting! Yes great points! Athleticly gifted creates issues. I’m still going to work with him to try and get him to slow down. You summed it up perfectly!
@@Jitsover50 Farther away. But this isn't so bad,I think it's good to know what to expect. I played disc golf for 20 years without learning anything and after watching UA-cam I learned so much of it. I'm also 50. :D

Great video. If theres one thing I try to share with brand new white belts is just slow down, control your resting and energy. I also like to give them something nibble on by suggesting that they try and hit just one move per class during rolling. Just one per class and go from there.
Thank you! Yes I try to teach during the roll and point out glaring structure or principle based mistakes. As a matter of fact in my video debuting tomorrow I do EXACTLY that with a new white belt.
A good one to teach him is the 2 in, 2 out rule, lol. Triangle after triangle after triangle. The 2 in, 2 out rule was drilled into me very early in my Jiu-jitsu journey, before I even knew how to triangle. Looking back I think it was great because I rarely ever get caught in a triangle or armbar as a white belt because of such drilling.
I’m a white belt that started a month ago. I have fighting experience in boxing in my past as well as young dumb street fights and it’s incredibly difficult to be able to slow myself down and relax to be more effective. In my untrained dumb head over powering and exerting a lot of energy feels like it works better but it never does lol.
I have a similar background and I also couldn't slow myself down because it felt good! You are correct it doesn't work. It feels like it is working but it is preventing us from learning actual technique. lol. Happy New Year!
I’m an older blue belt and I have a tough time with brand new white belts like that. I really enjoy playing the chess match sort of game, but when there’s no strategy or goal in mind from my opponent, it kind of throws my brain for a loop.
i just did my very 1st roll, i have no xp in any martial art, and i was like chris, not sure what i was doing, i just wanted to challange myself and start something new aswell, i managed to pass guard(was probally given to me) and from there i had no idea what to do lol, so i ended up getting rag dolled , but it gave me a starting point on where i need to work more on, i had fun but now the work begins
Wow you did your first roll and found my channel at a similar time! The perfect match. In the beginning just focus on defense. Once you can defend a guard pass, you can initiate one.
@Jitsover50 I just had my 2nd roll, I took your advice on focusing on defending and surviving the rounds, and I impressed myself....by delaying my partner submitting me, I was able to see how I need to conserve energy at some points and be explosive at others. I'm going to continue to focus on defending/escapes as I kept putting myself in give away positions...the learning continues
In the beginning we inly usually only have moral victories. Such as defending the submission. Or forcing a blue belt to take an extra 30 seconds to pass your guard. Then analyze those movements. When you develop good submission defense you won't be as worried about getting your guard passed@@Pzest_Titan
Very nice, I always found for people significantly below your level, like this, spilt the roll into halves. First half do what is happening here, the second half you stop the teaching side and tap them more. It is very important in Jits (well in most things really) that people learn through mistakes (safely) as I used to say you aren't a proper BJJ practitioner until you know the number of light fixtures in the dojo, learning to defend and not do stupid mistakes is in fact the first thing you should learn. Nice stuff.
Just came across your channel. Am 49 yr old White belt. Started 2 months ago. Have became bit by the bjj bug. Really want this to work but am one of if not the oldest there. And some classes just not getting it. Not flexible. And getting that old dog feeling. Guess am looking for advice.
It takes years to develop a Jiu-jitsu IQ. In the beginning you have no idea about the concepts and principles. As your knowledge expends and deepens it allows you to learn at a faster rate. In the beginning you have to go through the slow learning to develop that acumen. Eventually you will pick things up on first glance. As for flexibility you have to research what it truly is and what stretches are needed to improve. Also remember to ALWAYS warm up before stretching by jumping rope or jogging.
as a zero stripe white belt, an unfamiliar blue belt asked me to roll last class, and I wasn't sure how to start the roll. Do we stand up, do we discuss terms, what is the common etiquette? anyway, always appreciate the content!
Good question! I would recommend starting seated if you have no grappling experience. Eventually start on the feet with someone you trust. Seek a blue or purple belt mentor. Thank you for the kind words!
@Jitsover50: Why is separating the elbow from the knee important? (I'm assuming that you are referring to the opponent's elbow and the opponent's knee, right?)
Good question. I am new to this and need to realize when to dive into things more deeply. The answer is it creates a structurally weak position that is by nature easier to manipulate. The best part of my frames are when my knee goes beyond my elbow. It is impossible to get knee on belly from side control when that fence is up. It always makes things easier when passing the guard to separate these two joints.
Nice vid, I pretty much do the same thing as you with the new people and as they develop more I point out the mistakes they make during the roll and sometimes let them run it back.
Thank you. That is very cool. I had a friend who was a chess master. He would let me take back any move and still win. lol. New students shouldn't be getting smashed by experienced players. imo
I agree no point in smashing new people. I do however go a bit harder if there in "white belt rage mode" but they soon calm down after been tapped. @@Jitsover50
Good question. Knee and elbow connection are key for him to fend off my submissions. It also prevents my ability to get to knee on belly. The further I get his knee and elbow away from each other the more vulnerable he becomes. His muscles can no longer function in a supportive manner. I hope this helps.
I can see these young muscular athletic guys who think they can just out muscle an older fellow but then realize all that strength and energy they put out doesn't work or gets easily nullified by technique and skill.
Yes and I think at those academies they are making a mistake. In my opinion. When I first started the higher belts would just beat us up with no mercy and no teaching.
@@Jitsover50 We have different viewpoints on this. The instructor's job is to teach them and put them with applicable training partners more than likely blue belts. But much Respect to you.
Brand new white belts need to be given the feeling of helplessness. One time a rock-climbing, strong, UFC-watching newcomer came to the gym for a trial class and he was only paired to roll with white and blue belts smaller than him and he was unfortunately able to avoid being tapped in his first class. A great shame
