I'm quite a new white belt. I watch BJJ videos on youtube quite obsessively and this is by far the best white belt advice I've come across. I learn a lot from your rolling videos as well. Keep up the good job!
Very new to bjj couple weeks in. Bit old to the game at 63 but I’m having fun. As an man after 43 years of working a bit stiff for bjj but able to move pretty well. Learning how the game is played and how to do it safely. Would like to roll as long as it takes to be a good training partner. Guys have been helping.
Wonderful advice. Thank you. At 48, I’m definitely early to class and warming up. I’m going into this journey with patience yet an eagerness to learn. This channel is very helpful.
Awesome content! Newly promoted 45 yr old blue belt here - I learned that sometimes you have to face your fear and actually pick someone aggressive. This experience will get you ready for different types of sparring partners. I don’t do it too often, but next time you are traveling/visiting a gym, you don’t get blindsided and hence avoid getting injured because your body is familiar with this type of stress. Everyone stay healthy!
Good stuff, my friend. Really love what you're putting out. As a late 40's blue belt, I would love to see your advice similar to this video, but for older blue belts.
Really great advice, thank you for sharing. As you know i am over 50, just started BJJ a few months ago coming from a Wing Chun background, so i found this video very useful, thank you.🙏
Loved this. I’ve watched almost all of your rolls and you’re one of my favourite channels. Glad to see you doing some sitdown content too and growing your channel in new ways. Good luck with it and thanks again!
Love your videos man. I started Jiu Jitsu at 28 years old after recovering from a multitude of shoulder surgeries from years of playing Rugby. You videos have been fantastic in showing me how to roll correctly with measured pace and intensity. Would love to see more videos of you rolling particularly in Gi with larger opponents. Have a great day!
Thank you! I had a couple of terrible shoulder injuries early on. That is what made my focus turn to injury prevention while still being effective. Did you see this video? ua-cam.com/video/AHjh9MVUDb8/v-deo.html
I was sneaking it in there. lol. Thank you. Avoidance is about putting our ego's aside and avoiding certain partners. Especially the ones with that overly competitive, "win at all costs" vibe.
@Jitsover50 nothing is obvious for a white belt like me. Your chanel is one of my favorites. I'm 40 with a lot of injuries (because of my old work) and my goal is to be like you, chilled, technician, less effort more thinking...oss sir.
Duly noted! Thank you very much! I really enjoy the philosophy, the way you explain and the pace of your video. If one day you wanted to explain the basics move, escape and submission, that would be perfect for me but that may not be what you have in mind for your channel. Anyway, a Big thank you from France for all your videos!
Thanks so much for this! I"m 50 yo white belt two years into the journey and these were absolutely fantastic. Much appreciated! I wonder if you and Rick Ellis could ever do a collaboration?
Thank Dan. I can't find your other comment. BUT. Most of my opinions by default, are from an over 50 perspective. I hope people realize anyone can benefit their journey from my channel.
#3 is very interesting. Everybody purple and up at my gym is super chill. It's always the fresh whites and blues that are the hyper aggressive, dangerous partners hahaha. Great advice regardless of partner attitude though.
Great points, I'm working of the breathing control, 53, 5'6", having survived a heart attack several years ago I tend to go into panic mode when getting smashed
Due to Heart attacks and strokes I emphasize not going really hard. When on bottom just learn proper framing so you can avoid having your partner go chest to chest aka getting smashed
I made sure to do a lot of cardio training and strength and conditioning (kick boxing, person training) before I started BJJ, but I will say that the cardio for rolling is very different than any other. But yes, I tap early and often and have found a lot of value in framing. Thanks for your reply, much appreciated!@@Jitsover50
Agreed but the problem with only training with chill partners is you could move away from more natural, untrained reactions. I try to train with chill people 60% of the time. More competitive partners 30% and super competitive meatheads and new students 10%. Lol. We need to feel all levels of resistance.
I would argue that the hire belts generally have much better control and understanding of how to roll with newer jujitsu players. I actually preferred to roll with purple and hire when I was new. White and blue belts (especially younger guys) had a lot to prove and were way more aggressive.
Spam americanas is commandment number 1 :D Women are actually really good for technique. I have found a lot of success with higher belts in terms of not getting intense rolls.
This is a great piece of informantion for me as a white belt. May I ask your oppinion on youtube learning? Would you recommend to apply some of youtube techniques during class? I am trying to be as delicate with my mates in gym as posible, not to harm them on accident , so I am afraid to exercise something, that our teacher didn't show us.
Jiu Jitsu has so much material to learn we need to break it down into pieces. White belts need to work on defense. There are different aspects to defense. Guard retention, frames and escapes. Decide what you want to work on then watch videos about that specifically. Also learn to execute movements with as little effort and pressure as possible. Always do just enough. Also just match your opponents energy or less.
I'm still in my first month but one thing I've struggled with is knowing when I'm in danger and should be tapping vs just in a bad position. A few times I've had people tell me I should be tapping early and not making them hurt me but I'm not trying to fight through it. I just can't tell when I'm in a hold and should be tapping or if they're just controlling and putting pressure on me.
Great points! This is exactly what I mean! We need to teach white belts when to tap on all the basic submissions. Don't worry about tapping early. Especially as a beginner. I roll with white and blue belts without submitting them all the time. It is not because I can't. I would rather control the position and experiment with new forms of control. I may have to make a video about this! Thank you for watching and the idea!
Thanks for video!! Just out of curiosity do you still work in wall street ? In my spare time when I'm not doing BJJ I'm learning about investing/trading myself.
So because of your personal experience you think that negates the value of all belts? Belts aren't just about who can tap who. They signify your devotion to the art as well as loyalty to a school. True they are NOT a direct measurement of skill. They are much more. Blue belt is still a beginner belt. btw
@@Jitsover50 I still think they are silly and so do many of my friends who hold higher ranking belts. There are many schools that award a black belt in just a couple years and many that award a black belt in a decade or longer. I don't understand this logic. I know a couple brown belts that have their way with guys that have held black belts for decades. They just possess more skill even though they've dedicated less time to the art. Its just pieces of fabric after all.
Hey coach! What's your position or opinion on individuals who are on performance enhancement drugs and or roads and then go to class and spar with younger weaker opponent just like you recommend to try to choose someone smaller but it's just overall a true question I've been dwelling
I don't mind training with someone on those drugs. Especially someone that I trust. I wouldn't want to compete against someone who was on them. That is partially why I haven't competed. I do jiu jitsu to be healthy. Not to be jacked up on roids. Someone who is on performance enhancers looking for younger weaker opponents will not help them improve their BJJ. They will only "win" when they go against someone who is weaker. I hope I answered your question properly.

Thank you! That is good to hear. Eagerness to learn is key!
Good common sense here. I think we, as over 50's, should already know this stuff automatically but it's a good reminder.
Thank you from an older white belt. Been following your channel for a little while now. I owe you a coffee!
Haha. I appreciate you. I hope it’s been helping your journey!

Thanks for sharing this. I think the - having a mentor - commandment is huge for LIFE and BJJ.
Yes I’ve had mentors my entire life in every skill pursuit!

I appreciate you sir. I enjoy the rolls and the intelligent commentary. I want someone like you at my gym. Maybe I'll be that guy eventually.

Great list of suggestions. I would also add washing all your gear (including belt) after every class. Trim your nails and use good mat discipline.
True but I didn't want to baby everyone with hygiene. I don't wash my belt after every class. btw. Plus I only had Ten Commandments.
