- Here is my 2016 Bobcat Toolcat 5600 demonstrating the Bobcat "Hydrostatic Traction Control" (HTC) that is on the 2014+ Toolcats (optional on 5600, standard on 5610). I specifically picked a worse case scenario for the toolcat; no weight/payload. slick ground (wet melting snow) and climbing a hill at an angle from a stop. I show the traction control on and off so you can see how it helps.
Skid Steers (with tires) are known for their poor mud/soft ground performance and the Toolcat is better but still not great. The toolcat's longer wheelbase helps spread the ground contact and also avoids the issue of the front tire building a hill for the rear tire to climb that happens on a skid steer. Another advantage of the toolcat is the 4 wheel steering that allows you to try to climb out the side of ruts if needed. However these typical skid steer/toolcat R4 tires are not he best for mud since they clog up easy and do not self clean well.
Older Toolcat generations had a mix of limited slip and locking diffs to aid traction in rough/slick conditions. These newer ones have limited slip front and rear diffs but they must be Torsen (gear) style that send a fixed torque bias from the low traction side to the high traction side but that only works if both tires have some level of traction. If one side has no or very little traction then the torsen effectively acts as an open diff. See more info about torsen here: auto.howstuffw...

Is yours an older generation? Supposedly all Toolcats 2014+ have traction control.

@@sidlinger 😂 Yeah from what I’ve read it’s a huge difference in traction. However I assume you paid a fraction of what they cost now $85k thanks to COVID…I mean inflation…I mean greed.
Bar tires suck in snow. Also wondering if a locking differential would help
Seems like a UTV and a skidsteer would be a better option or the right tools for the right jobs. I have a 2011 polaris ranger and it's pretty good at plowing...looking at a snow blowers today for it...there are a couple ranging from 2800 to about 5500 which is kind of high. If you factor in the price for this machine though, it's a drop in the bucket...a skid steer with a UTV might be a more viable option outside of creature comfort AC/HEAT. Good that it works for you, I don't have that kind of money to spend so I'll have to stay where I am...nice to watch though. Have you seen the new XP 1000 Polaris? Heated and cooled cab.....much more than there now than when I got mine....I just looked them up, pretty nice if you have the $$
This is a skidsteer and a UTV. It accept tracks and chains.
I just switched to a Titan turf tire (R3 vs R4 I believe) in 27x10.5x15 and it’s as if it’s reborn! My sod is much happier now, and the TC has far better traction in woods with moist dirt. Not sure how it will do the snow, but I have chains that I hope will make up for cold weather performance.
Nice! I think I would prefer turf tires but cant justify the switch over cost with good shape R4's.

I realize there is snow and ice...but that seemed to get stuck pretty easily. Does it get stuck like that pretty often? and if so, what kind of hills do they get stuck on?
This was a demonstration without the traction control. With it on it makes it up no problem (esp if you dont stop and dig holes to then climb out of first). I havent gotten stuck stuck yet with the toolcat. If you get stuck you can use the bucket to push/pull your way out.

So for all out traction I'm assuming the earlier machines with the limited slip would do a little better than the newer machines with traction control?
No, early machines at best had a locking rear diff and only in slow speed and 2 wheel steer mode. Newer with traction control is better. The worst are the newer machines (all independent suspension) without the optional traction control.
@@NaterTater Sorry, meant to say earlier machines with the locking diff. I can definitely we where traction control on 4 wheel steer would have its benefits though.

@@NaterTater I checked and it’s a $500 option on the UW series. What do you think it’s better a UW53 or a UW56? I saw your video using a box blade on your toolcat. I am wondering if you can implements on the 56 then what’s the point on getting the 53. What are your thoughts? Thank you.

Looks like the tomcat is only good for delivering flowers to your neighbor on a clear sunny day,, and traveling on clean & dry pavement.
I suppose that's one way to look at it. In reality its a very capable machine and I explain why and how I demonstrated this particular event got it stuck as well as showing how it can traverse this ditch with the traction control on.

I use ours to lift 2000# pallets. Feed round and big square bales. Spray. It's a very versatile machine.
