I like how Freya claims she understands she made mistakes by robbing baldur of his feeling but the moment kratos and atreus undo her 'mistake' she's distraught shouting "NOOOOO!"
Yeah, that's sadly what breaks Freya's likeability/moral justifications for me. She says she's made mistakes but clearly doesn't mean it, else she would have broken the spell. Even seeing that Baldur is still miserable a century after she imposed the spell on him, she continues to insist that she knows better and does everything she can to prolong the source of his suffering. By trying to save Baldur she creates his intense hatred for her, which is what leads to Kratos killing him.
@@drasilisk2895 It’s difficult. Wanting to protect your child, especially one destined to die is completely understandable and justified. I just realized that when the World Serpent said Atreus seemed familiar is because Atreus is Loki and Loki is the father of Fenrir, Jörmungandr, and Hel. Jörmungandr is the World Serpent.
Loki creates the world serpent through an act of magic, either turns Kratos into the serpent or creates it from his rage. Why else do you think the serpent has light skin and has a beard? Also has red patterns.
When I noticed the design similarities between the serpent and Kratos when they first showed it I started wondering about this kind of thing, it's been in the back of my mind this whole playthrough, now there's finally a possible explanation behind it :0 so cool!
Fucking hell you are a genius Literally it makes very much sense, even when mimir says that when the serpent clashed with Thor and went back in time before it's birth. Wow, I'm mind blown.
Just realised that when Baldur said:"i thought your kind was supossed to be so enlightened,so much better than us",he wasn't refering to kratos as a god,but as a giant. Most likely Odin wanted to eradicate the gaints once and for all and he sent Bladur to finish the job
however, baldur said he didn't want to fight kratos he just wanted to know how to lift his curse if kratos had that information and gave it to him he would've left kratos alone
@@CrypticKnight985Thor already fought Faye and the same thing happened when Thor fought Kratos in their first fight, they stalemated and created the frozen lightning bolt. Odin probably figured Baldur would do better.

"When doom befalls the indestructible." Baldur was indestructible, and now he's dead, doom befalled him, then immediatly after he died snow started falling, thus the start of Ragnarok.
39:25 i think the reason Baldur was so confused in this part was because its his first time actually FEELING Kratos's Spartan Rage. In their previous battles, Kratos used it, but he couldn't tell the difference. At most, he probably felt the impact knocking him back slightly more, but since everything is numb, he couldn't feel the difference in power Now though, he's actually realizing how much strength Kratos gains when he stops holding back
@@revthescatman137 oh good point. but by that I meant like, he felt himself getting knocked back more strongly. there's no way he doesn't any impact at all, considering he grunts and reacts to kratos's punches. at most, maybe he feels like a numb touch everytime he gets hit, but he's not completely devoid of "feeling", otherwise there'd be no reaction from him at all
at 19:02 Atreus: *I’ve never been in a Giant’s belly either* A little foreshadowing, we later find out that it’s actually Atreus’s second time in a Giant’s belly, since Faye was a Giant and she gave birth to him.
I love how during Baldur's fight they let Atreus shine (when they were fighting on the giant's chisel). He went from barely being able to kill an elk to being able to shoot upside down MID AIR.
And the fact that Jormungandr responded immedietly after Atreus asked for help, seems to show that Jormungandr's familiarity with the boy activated his instincts, following his father's command instantaneously and unconditionally
Yeah well I'm pretty sure Loki is a pretty good father in the mythos as well. The whole reason Ragnarok happened is because Odin feared Loki's children and trapped them all to try and avoid ragnarok, which only led to Loki and his children being pissed and Loki protecting his children and wife.
“Only the serpent and the guardian remain” -Faye was the last jotnar guardian in Midgard “When doom befalls the indestructible” -Baldur who was previously invulnerable, is killed by Atreus and Kratos “only then shall the guardian return” -Faye is returning to Jotunheim (her original home) except she’s returning as ashes “We will wait for word that gods grow good” -Atreus and Kratos are trying to be better than those who came before. They are trying to be good gods *The writing in the this game is on point
the whole "while i still have strength" thing, that's not kratos dying. have y'all actually seen any nighttime in this game? have they eaten or slept? no. he meant he's tired, cause he's just been on this bigass journey
"You changed somthing" Well magni and modi were supposed to survive ragnarok and they didn't even live to see it.... so yeah I think something _has_ changed
You want another subtle clue the game gave us about Faye being a giant? When Kratos and Atreus first meet Sindri and they're talking about Faye's passing, the music that's playing is a version of... Lullaby of the Giants.
After Baldur died, I had a flashback to one of Kratos's boat stories. It was the one about the thief who was sentenced to death and when his mother visited him, he bit off her ear, because she only showed him love, and never discipline. The other stories were obviously about Kratos and Atreus (the story about the horse turning on his master is obviously Kratos and Aries, and the one about the frog and his son is Kratos and Atreus) but I couldn't figure out which one the thief's mother was alluding to. And then I realized it was about Freya and Baldur. The spell she put on Baldur that robbed him of all sensation might have been used as a form of torture by any other person, but Freya put that spell on her own son out of love. Who knows what else she did to him before then, to "protect" him? How badly was he coddled, sheltered, or even disabled, out of love? "Had she taught him discipline, his life might have been longer."
Sabrina Clingenpeel I want to ask if you have any idea of the story with the scorpion and the frog. I'm thinking it has to do with the nature of gods but not entirely sure
when Baldur died, freya got to feel exactly what he felt when she took away his feeling. They kinda make it that way when she said that they robbed her of everything after they saved her life, especially since thats what she was trying to do for baldur. just a thought
yeah, i don't know how she didn't understand what baldur was feeling and saying. she was incredibly selfish towards him. she condemned him to a fate worse than death all so that he would be "alive" and she would be happy knowing that. he atleast died happy and feeling something for once.
@justarandompepe8961 yes but you have to think of it from her point of view as well. Or kratos. They'd do anything to protect their kids from harms way. Freya took the selfish and only way she could. Kratos killed heimdall to protect his son. Both trying their best to protect their children. Both not good options
my god, in that prophecy picture thing, the runes next to faye and under her funeral pyre name her "laufey" and the runes next to kratos name him "farbauti"... u know, like loki's parents. that's so cool
Yes. Fun fact, faye was the5 nickname kratos gave to her by kratos, as spartans have a habit of using nicknames instead of actual names, to shorten the sentences they speak, hence using "boy" and "head". Also if im right, farbauti means 'cruel striker' right? Fits kratos its awesome
Also, Atreus being Loki explains why he was depicted with wolves around him. Those wolves were likely Fenrir and Fenrir's sons, Skoll and Hati. Fenrir is the son of Loki, as is Jormungandr. Another thing it explains is the fact that Atreus could so easily read, and speak at the very end, the giants' tongue.
@@BasseC05 He was dead, but we don't know if it was Loki who killed him. It could be Thor. If Thor was just another randomly appearing boss like Baldur, they wouldn't have showcased him the way they did. He will kill Kratos, or even Odin himself maybe
The fact that Kratos is like "Come here boy lemme tell you a story" after Freya kinda threatens Kratos with the knowledge she knows that Atreus doesn't is so cool. I love how Kratos goes from not letting Atreus know anything and being naive to telling his son everything so that no one has that power over him and he can have a stronger relationship with his son.
It just hit me, Faye literally planned every small thing. The reason she seemingly needlessly marked the certain trees at the start near home was to break the seal protecting them, which would get Kratos and Atreus out
Which makes me frightened for Kratos. What will he do when he realizes he may be another pawn in the hands of fate? Will he succumb to the rage he's been learning to control? Or will he let go and continue to attempt to defy fate?
@@nathanfournelle6736 it still might make him feel some type of way though . Then again hes more mature now, and he even told his son that his mother must of had a good reason ( knowing that he wouldn't be any better at juding her for keeping secrets).
Small details about this game that I love, now that this is the last video and spoilers are essentially moot by way of age: Kratos stops using slang and is very drawn out and blunt(No contractions, short sentences whenever he can afford them) because he's speaking Nordic, not Greek. Like Atreus says, "You can already speak it, why not learn to read it?" Kratos has no idea what characters are saying in another language(The first Ogre you fight, Jormmungandr, the Dark Elves) and there are no subtitles for that because he's not Really listening to them, but you *do* get them for Atreus and Mimir because Kratos is always focusing on what they say, especially in combat where they call warnings. Baldur has the World Serpent's coils tattooed on his back. Freya has Hawk feathers in her hair, hinting at her ability to shape into one(Her house is also like a burrow, and has wooden trim like a bird's nest). When going down the River to get the Blades, you pass the first Dock you start the game at. If you didn't break the stave in that specific spot, the magic in the boat probably would have fried and left Kratos swimming, they really missed no details. On the painted wall of the Giants, up at the top is Mimir and his tree, both symbolizing that he was up high, and his role on the journey, because his head is highlighted in gold. Freya struggles most in the Final Battle with pulling the Chisel from the giants head, because the spell she's under prevents her from harming both living AND dead, so damaging the Giants Corpse probably put her under strain from it...meaning if she follows through on the "Parading your broken body to every corner of every realm" it would be agonizing for her, so if she really does, that's some dedication. The World Serpent doesn't actually spit the ax back at you, he just opens his mouth and the Ax comes flying because it is enchanted to return. Mimir only blinks the eye he still has, until both are restored. The World Serpent is so helpful, says he recognizes Atreus, because Loki is Jormmunganders father, and likely knew of this journey. In actual Norse Mythology, we aren't actually sure if Loki is real. His only mentions are from after Christianity kinda steamrolled that part of the world. So explaining that by having him be the son of a god from Greece and a Giant? Clever as FUCK! That's all for now!
Thanos: your optimism is misplaced asgardian... Loki: well for one thing...I'm not asgardian... Thanos: ...? Loki: and for another..........we have a kratos...

I watched 4 minutes of the first episode of God of War: Ragnarok, and then decided to watch this series since I hadn't yet. It's taken me three days to finish it, and I have fallen in love with the story and characters so much(I also want to learn a lot more about Norse mythology). I've been watching the Ragnarok series Jack has on his channel and go so upset after having to wait for tomorrow to see the next upload so I rewatched this and omg the twist in Ragnarok is just OWJSJDHDUJDHDHD
I like how they obscured Atreus real identity in such a clever way. Faye was short for “Laufey” the whole time. And Loki’s father is Farbauti the “Cruel Striker”, it wouldn’t be a stretch for the Norse to refer to Kratos as such. Then add the fact that the World Serpent mentions recognizing Atreus, who is actually his father Loki, and how that fits in with the myth of Jormungandr being sent back in time before his own birth, how Atreus’ mistletoe broke Baldrs spell (similar to the myth) etc etc they did a really good job at building this story and making sense of Kratos place in the Norse world
Never noticed this before but when Kratos gets between Freya and Baldur at 28:50 she says his name. Kratos never told her his name so she must have figured out who exactly he was. Just a neat detail I thought I'd mention.
It’s also just him saying snow to sort of like, recognize it I guess? He spent eternity not feeling anything, so the joy he must’ve felt when he was finally able to feel again must’ve been immeasurable.

He is so well-spoken, being able to articulate everything he's feeling almost without faltering, being able to recall all those different plot points and immediately understanding how they fit together... He clearly spends a lot of time learning about the things he's passionate about.
Yeah ikr, that's why i like seeing him play because he actually knows what he's talking about and actually appreciates the game for the little things like the footsteps on the snow and how the physics work.
Ikr when he realised that when Baldur said "I expected u to be a lot bigger" or something like that, when I first saw that I thought he's saying that cuz he knew Kratos's achievements I can see why he thought Kratos was gonna be a lot more bigger, but he was actually talking about Faye, the fact that he realised that so quickly is actually insane, that's something you would realise if you played the game again, Jack truly is smart in his own ways not really in puzzle type of field but hey like Einstein said if u judge a fish from it's ability to climb a tree it'll believe his whole life thinking he's stupid, In the same way Jack is a fish great at swimming but not really at climbing trees
@@etypings9542 I'm not trying to be a dick, but he's actually not really all that knowledgeable on game design and physics. Can we point out that Kratos named Atreus after a man who gave him hope in dark times? That means that Atreus is a reminder of hope for Kratos, which I completely love because it shows his love for his son
@@thek2despot426 I recall that although, I was speaking of God of War 3. Having never played it, I can only recall from memory having watched walkthroughs, but Kratos and Pandora actually had a conversation about fear and hope (something I remembered in another fiction since it partially applied). Kratos indicated that hope does nothing for those who have it ignoring the fact that he clearly hopes to win against Zeus or he would not have fought as hard as he has. In the end, hope ended up being the force that finally brought an end to the king of Olympus. Now he hopes that Atreus can be better than him just as the original Atreus of Sparta inspired his people to hope that there was humanity in them despite them being machines of war. Honestly, now I actually want to see the original Atreus.
@Emperor of Inception He literally had hope inside of him. And he died to give hope to all of mankind (which was like useless since mankind in Greece is, you know, gone).
The "Loki" twist at the end will always be one of my favourites in all of gaming. They played it so well. Most games leave their twist to the end but they impact the experience straight away. This one? Nonono, they drop a bombshell on you that has no immediate implications, but allows your mind to run every corner of Norse mythology to try and figure out how that will affect the sequels. Amazing work by Cory Barlog.

This makes Baldur's weird behavior at the house make more sense. He kept saying things like you already know what he wants, he thought Kratos knew because he thought he was a giant. I also remember him saying at one point during that 1st fight, I'm not my brother. I need to rewatch it to decide what I think it means, but it sounds like he was trying to reason with Kratos, like when he said I just needed answers & tell me what I want, pain stops. Everyone know about Thor's essential genocide of the giants (per Odin's orders. It's important to remember that part), it sounds like Baldur was saying give us the information we want & I won't kill you.
Sakib uddin Mondal Well... It isn't out of the realm of possibility. Atreus has many unknown abilities to be discovered, and shape-shifting might be one of them. At the same time though, what sort of reaction would cause a giant serpent?... Unless that snake is Atreus... Meh, who knows?

Ikr when he realised that when Baldur said "I expected u to be a lot bigger" or something like that, when I first saw that I thought he's saying that cuz he knew Kratos's achievements I can see why he thought Kratos was gonna be a lot more bigger, but he was actually talking about Faye, the fact that he realised that so quickly is actually insane, that's something you would realise if you played the game again, Jack truly is smart in his own ways not really in puzzle type of field but hey like Einstein said if u judge a fish from it's ability to climb a tree it'll believe his whole life thinking he's stupid,
In the same way Jack is a fish great at swimming but not really at climbing trees
@@etypings9542 I'm not trying to be a dick, but he's actually not really all that knowledgeable on game design and physics. I kinda noticed it in the Resident Evil 8 playthrough, where a lot of the stuff he said and terms he used were just blatantly wrong. And also in that game, he managed to ignore vital plot points at the end and then complained that it didn't make sense. I don't hate Jack or anything, but he does talk a lot about stuff he knows very little about.
@@sloppyphart7879 ahh its fine if we have diff opinions, thanks for informing me abt that but i think that he's grown to be more knowledgeable esp in recent years. It's cool if you think otherwise tho.
I just loved reading this comment thread
I like how one of the panels of the future, the broken one at 1:07:55 shows atreus walking with the wolves in iron wood. It's just soooo cool how the game developers already had that part planned out.
Can we point out that Kratos named Atreus after a man who gave him hope in dark times? That means that Atreus is a reminder of hope for Kratos, which I completely love because it shows his love for his son
And this from the man who once disregarded the idea of hope if I am not mistaken.
@@emperorofinception3571 Pretty sure that's the first line in all of God of War: _"The gods of Olympus have abandoned me. _*_Now there is no hope."_*
It actually shows his love for hope.
Cory actually said he didn't come up with it but when he was pitched the idea, he wished he did.
Ryan Murray this is like the Luke I am your father of god of war
I reckon the one thing most people don't realise is that in Norse mythology, Loki isn't Odin's son unlike the avenger movies
Even in the MCU Loki wasn't Odin's true born son, he was adopted. His true parents were frost 'GIANTS'.
@@almondsai7214 does the "giants" have different tribes or kind?
"This is where the cycle ends." Is what Kratos said to Zeus as he killed him.
And I love that he held up that statement, and is raising Atreus with all the love he can.
No, isn't Zeus the one that said that to Kratos when he stabbed him in GOW 2?

Been playing the game while watching this playthrough for the first time as I got ragnarok for Christmas and that cliffhanger got me to open up the the game case faster than ever😂
everyone is watching this series again because of it's well deserved victory in earning game of the year

Kuro Yuki same
He's a VERY different man here than he once was
I Agree Jack after the previous GOW he was angry for vengeance now he is the type of man like Logan in the movie Struggling to the past and his ability
I have never played the games, but jacksepticeye was so good at explaining how he used to be and his backstory that i still felt like i knew him
I can’t agree more!
I love how Kratos and Atreus are doing combo moves during the Baldure fight

The boy learned well
Dragon Dude and the fact freya knows how to reach her son by just telling him how to undo his curse and end this in on word
Freya: You will never change!
Kratos: *Broods In Former Mass Murderer*

LOKIUNCIA witcher 3 comes pretty close too
Completely agree!
indeed. try Nier: Automata

the thing is that the line that kratos uses when he snaps baldur's neck "the cycle ends here" is identical to the one that zeus once said when he tried to kill kratos

I just realized this: "When doom befalls the indestructible, only then shall the guardian return" 1:02:49. This relates to Kratos and Atreus killing Baldur and once that happened, Faye was able to return to Jotenheim but in ashes.

Looking at the Norse mythology this game is based off, I realized that in the game, the mother is called Faye, but her true name is Laufey the Just, who in Norse myth is the mother of Loki, the God of Mischief.
Faye is just her nickname. She is also called Laufey in the game.
@Username quite B O Y ( or girl, or etc)
yes! in the runes at the end it calls her Laufey, so i guess they took the ‘fey’ at the end of Laufey and made it her “nickname”

I just realised this watching the series back.. Seán actually saw a diagram of atreus with a wolf.. In norse mythology, Loki is the father of Fenrir, who is a gigantic wolf..
Loki is also the father of jormungandr/ the world serpent
So apparently Fenrir is supposed to kill Odin and Jormungandr is supposed to kill Thor. So essentially Loki is the key to overthrowing the Aesir
And Loki is the mother of Odin's eight legged horse.
Plus, as Mimir said: "Remind me to tell you about the wolves"
Since the world serpent travelled back in time, will it still be around when the Jörmungandr of that time is born?
0:57:47 The fact that Kratos was letting his bandages go, letting his past go. Removing the last secret he really kept from Atreus, and soaking in the freedom. Atreus just interrupts it with is like um can we go already? LOL I really can't.
Look at Kratos's facial hair throughout the games. Does that mean that Atreus will end up with a sick beard too?
I very much hope so! If Kratos is his dad, then I'm excited to see who Atreus will grow up to be! Beard is a requirement.

That was the ice the giant was blowing
I really don’t want it to seem like I’m trying to show you up, but what OP said is true.
TV Tropes confirms it; and you can also see it in that before he speaks in Jörmungandr’s language, his eyes are normal, and then they start glowing when he speaks the language.
But I definitely thought that it was the ice the first time I saw this part too😂
(I hope I did t cause any bad feelings, that wasn’t my intent.)

if anyone wants to check
That true
He is son of the world serpent
This makes Baldur's weird behavior at the house make more sense. He kept saying things like you already know what he wants, he thought Kratos knew because he thought he was a giant. I also remember him saying at one point during that 1st fight, I'm not my brother. I need to rewatch it to decide what I think it means, but it sounds like he was trying to reason with Kratos, like when he said I just needed answers & tell me what I want, pain stops. Everyone know about Thor's essential genocide of the giants (per Odin's orders. It's important to remember that part), it sounds like Baldur was saying give us the information we want & I won't kill you.
the world serpent is loki's son....thats why the world serpent said that atreus's face is familiar to him
Also, the wolf in front of him at the wall, that is Fenrir, another son of Loki.
@@raymanfreak7739 the snake can't be him because in Old Norse myth, the world serpent is supposed to kill Thor and Thor killing it during Ragnarok. I believe Atreus can shapeshift like Loki can, but not that.
Ezra Boger Well, That’s Because the World Serpent was fighting Thor, then all of a sudden, The Serpent was struck back in time. Which leads him to now.

"HE ROBBED ME OF EVERYTHING. {sobbing} EVERYTHING...!"
you can definitely hear the agony in her voice when she exclaims this, and i bet in her mind she'd rather be dead than to have the last thing she cherished taken away from her, which is why she wanted her last words to baldur be "i love you" because she truly did care for her child more than anything else
