Your channel was recommended to me by my iPhone instructor. Although I'm visually impaired and not blind, I find this video helpful and encouraging. I take Uber and Lyft but struggled with using voiceover to order a ride. Thank you for sharing. I feel confident that I can do it too. I agree with you that these ride sharing services offer more independence. God bless and, again, thanks for sharing.
Hi Joy! Really thankful for your video. I'm an O&M instructor and plan on showing this to my high school student who is learning to use uber and voiceover. Can't wait to show him how good you are at using voiceover! I know it'll be a big encouragement for him! Have a blessed day!
I’m so glad I came across your channel. It has opened my eyes and mind to so many things. If I come across any one blind and with a service dog I’ll have more of an understanding on how and what and everything else. Thank you for posting these.
Great video, thank you! When our 19 year old son David uses Uber, he adds “Visually Impaired” to his first name so the driver knows right away that he is blind. David doesn’t have a guide dog, so relies on the cane as a visual. In DC area, MANY Uber drivers will not take guide dogs for whatever reason, our blind friends with guide dogs report. I’m glad your area is a bit more guide dog friendly! Who wouldn’t just love Antonia!
Do drivers ever get funny about having a dog in their car? One thing I've noticed from quite a lot of Joys videos is the amount of people who pet Antonia... isnt that a bit rude to touch the dog without asking, especially when the dog is working?
Yes, technically when a service dog is working you cannot pet them - always ask though, some handlers will let you at their discretion. About having them in the car - it is within Joy's rights under the ADA to bring her service dog with her in cabs and ubers etc and drivers cannot deny her for it. I wonder if any uber drivers have a problem with this as well - but technically when you sign up as an uber driver you should understand that may be something you have to transport.
Salti Dawg it’s a tricky double standard the law has not quite figured out yet. That’s why hypoallergenic dogs are becoming more popular in the service dog trade. Perhaps Uber should update to allow riders to check if they have life threatening allergies and all can be treated accordingly. What if someone eats peanuts in the back of an Uber and the next person has anaphylaxis? It’s not just dogs, but it is something that should be worked out.
Joy, I just have to say, YOU'RE AMAZING!!! Thank you so much for sharing your story! I've learned so much from you after watching several videos here on UA-cam. I'm sure you get this a lot, but you are beautiful inside & out! God Bless you & you're family & may you all have a fabulous Christmas & Happy New Year. XoXo ❤
I noticed how hard it seems for some of the sighted to bridge their world and perception to meet you at yours. The few times I've come across someone who was blind it came so natural to help them navigate. I think its just because I imagined myself as a painter and painting the world for them. I felt like I drew them from darkness and it also made me appreciate the world around me more. Joy for both. Maybe if you tell people to think of it that way with you, relying on people for guidance will become a little easier, helpful and even enjoyable. I've been watching all morning, led to your channel by a video of you going through security at the airport. You're a blessing to the world, beautiful inside and out.
I love how she doesn’t need anyone for helping her doing these stuff ! Like .. i have my eyesight but im 100 percent sure she can manage much better than i do ..!! Wow ❤️ what a girl
Thank you so much, I have learned how to video without eyesight pretty good. I aim the camera lens in the direction of things I am touching, or listening to. I pretend the camera lens is my eyes. It’s pretty amazing, I visualize everything in my mind as I am filming.
Who ever dislikes this is a very bad person... these vids are very educational... and also entertaining the dog is so cute good luck with all of your traveling!
just totally amazing, you are a great person and a awsome role model to other blind or going blind . tou used that phone better than i could ever do it .
You are beautiful and a beautiful puppy! I think that it is so great how UBER has really made your life easier. It was funny that we could not see the screen on your phone! But I saw exactly what you saw! I would not change a thing and would not make another video to show for those of us that can see. I think it means more when we do not see! Party on!
This is a very good video. I am an O&M instructor and I appreciate seeing you use the app. Screen curtain on is fine to me. I will show this to my students! New subscriber here from Maryland!
The Educated System hi there, thank you so much for your follow and i'm so glad you enjoyed my video. Really hope your students benefit from watching my video ☺️ Oh and I love Maryland! I graduated high school in Baltimore and also attended the Maryland rehabilitation center for the blind for three months after graduation. Have a beautiful blessed day :-)
You too! I am new to Maryland from Georgia and Florida. I am going to use this video on a post online to help other O&Ms. Path to Technology. I appreciate your time creating this content.
Your videos are so cool! Your positive attitude and outlook on life is so incredibly inspiring. Thanks for making these videos, sharing your stories and helping educate the public.
I'm also blind, I have real eyes but they don't work because a tumor destroyed the optical nerve. Ever since then i've used voiceover. I began learning voiceover when iOS 6 was still around.
Hello joy just wanted to say i love your videos, i mentioned your video to my brother which his also blind and he’s actually going to college in Vancouver Wa , and i told him to check out your videos which i love god bless you !
Thank you for making this video! I am legally blind and have never taken Uber because I’ve been too nervous. This was so helpful, and I think I will be willing to give it a try now
That is so awesome to hear! It is actually super easy, let me know if you have any questions. I have had such positive experiences with Uber, praying all goes well for you too :-)
Joy Ross thank you very much! That’s very sweet. I really love all of your videos! You, along with a few other blind UA-camrs, even inspired me to start my own channel
Helpful hint for anyone using Uber/Lyft: please text us, don't call! I get SO many spam calls that I don't answer my phone unless it's someone I know and it's very unsafe to answer the phone while driving/navigating (I don't have Bluetooth in my car) :)
I work on webpages for government websites so I've had the benefit of receiving a lot of training on accessibility, often facilitated by people who use accessibility tools and can demonstrate from experience. All of it makes sense when I think about it, but I will never get over how impressed I am whenever I hear the typical screen reader speed. It's like almost everyone with low/no vision also speaks Old-Timey Auctioneer.
Your a very beautiful person you have such a great attitude about things I don't think I could do it I just would go in a depression and probably off myself but I'm really impressed how you go on with life your are awsome
Loved this video...I have bilateral vestibular paralysis, with no balance, and do not drive due to the effect on my vision and visual responses. I'm considering a Great Dane mobility dog and found this video so interesting! Uber has changed my life, too... as has having young, teenage drivers in the home now!
it talks to her and she learned all the different taps and everything that goes with it. Im sure it was kind of hard at first because its new but pracetice makes perfect right?
Jasmine it is called a screen curtain, and this is an option when you have VoiceOver with accessibility turned on. Since I cannot see my screen, this saves the battery life. With voiceover I don't obviously use the screen because I'm completely blind. All I need is the audio :-)
Joy Ross Thanks I was thinking about that. It makes sense that it's a feature but I was thinking if a sighted person needs to assist with an app then they would probably want to be able to see it but I'm sure people know how to run their own phone. I'm glad it can have battery saving features.
That is awesome!! I wonder if you should give them a code word to say to make sure they are who they say they are. Anyway I love your videos and you are so beautiful girl. Thanks for sharing.
I'm amazed how you do it all. So much confidence and beauty but all from within even though your looks are stunning and you are unaware if appearance other than what people tell you. Though I'm not sure if you were born blind or not. Your videos just started showing in my feed. I hope nobody takes advantage of you. Take care.
So I can't drive. I've never used uber. Does it cost to have someone pick up and drop off at both locations? Or can you pay it all up front so you know how much it would be.? Is it dangerous at all?
gemma Hutchinson im in australia and it really depends on which uber you get. Some are really good others not happy and will drive off if you have extra stuff to bring on the trip
I have been playing with the app. My only question is, how can I put in the right address? Because it gives me the wrong address every time I put in the destination. I know how to set up where to go. But don't know how to set my home address up. In fact, I live in the apartment building.
Ina Blue yes, she’s tall and in one video she was looking for clothes that were an extra small. The last time I wore an extra small was before puberty.

You can’t see the photo which means you don’t get that benefit. My husband told me that your guide dog would probably pick up on a person’s bad character and that would protect you.
I love how you remember your uber drivers, people in the stores and so on :)
the world needs more people like eric
Erik's so sweet omg
Even though you are unable to see, I am impressed how fashionable you always look. You look smokin with your hair tied back.
Your channel was recommended to me by my iPhone instructor. Although I'm visually impaired and not blind, I find this video helpful and encouraging. The uber driver is so sweet
I love how you showed us every aspect of your experience!
your phone battery must last forever since it doesn't use any power to the display.
being an LCD id imagine its still powering the screen
No it is a special app.
? An app for not killing you battery?. The voice part is built into iphones. But he ment that her phone screen is sooo dark so that saves battery
Jacqueline Smith-Jackson it’s actually not a app! You can go into your settings and turn on voice over. Apple installes this for blind people
@@iXizXmoen Nah the display is completely off, so it wouldn't use any power.
I LOVE ERIC

Tyler Rankin awe, you're too sweet! Thank you
Joy Ross you’re amazing at it!!!!
Uber isn’t awesome, you’re awesome, so beautiful.
Does Uber not react to voice commands to save you going through all the
options?
I love watching your channel makes me happy everytime.
Thank you so much! Lacey Lawless

@@platinum_amortentia What rights do the next passenger have? You know, the rider with the potentially life threatening dog allergies?

Dose it always talk that fast?
Joshua Turner you can set the speed of the voice.
That must be annoying to have to wait for the speech to play at normal speed when you use it all day long on your phone. 😃
Joshua Turner you pick the fast.
I love them too your videos are so interesting
Eric seems awesome lol. Joy as always you are amazinggggggggggg. i love your videos. they are so interesting to watch. i looooooove youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Great video, my friend needs to set this up and this really helps convince me it is indeed possible.
Hi Joy, you are awesome! I was wondering who helps you edit etc your videos. I am just curious I am enjoying your videos!!
I just wanted to say that you are an awesome UA-camr.

Each app has its own page with each swipe, as well as each feature has its own page with a swipe and sound, from what i saw in the video

After all , the dog is your eyes!
Great video!Thanx
Just wondering. Ubers in my area dont like having stuff with a person (eg luggage) do you ever have trouble with drivers not wanting your guide dog?
May I ask what are you are in? Just curious as never used Uber before and in UK, I want to try one soon :)
gemma Hutchinson im in australia and it really depends on which uber you get. Some are really good others not happy and will drive off if you have extra stuff to bring on the trip
Wow.
Does uber have a phone number to call instead of an app for the sight impaired?
No, the Blind uses the app just like anyone else. I use voiceover accessibility software.
Cute tail wag at 10:10
I love you so much and your videos ❤️

Ina Blue yes, she’s tall and in one video she was looking for clothes that were an extra small. The last time I wore an extra small was before puberty.
She said "its so good to see you" , Now im thinking
just a figure of speech lol
I know that Uber has a safety feature where they use a photo of the driver’s face so when they drive up you can see if the driver’s face matches the photo. What does she does for a living? She seems pretty well off.
Was wondering about this as well. She has had several dogs and over here they cost a minimum of 20.000,- EUR each.
Eloines she said her guide dogs have been given to her at no cost
Kelsea Williams They’re probably talking about the care.
I'm sure her husband works and she might get some kind of disability pension :)
guide dogs are free for people with disabilities. everyone knows this lol
Does the guide dog get nervous being separated and not being able to watch you so closely?
