    That's why you need an electoral reform to incentivize a third party.

    • @peabase
      @peabase 9 місяців тому +8

      Try to incentivise even more. The more the merrier -- literally. If parties need to collaborate to pass legislation, they have to keep it civil at all times. Multipartisanship is built in, as it were.

      @@robertshelton3796 The US copied its electoral system from its erstwhile foes, the British, and ended up with a similarly archaic electoral system that favours large parties at the expense of smaller ones. Likewise, the UK is afflicted with a de facto duopoly in the Tories and Labour, who take turns governing the country. All because of an archaic electoral system.

    • @loucololosse
      @loucololosse 9 місяців тому +2

      @@robertshelton3796 Correct me if I'm wrong but in an election if a party wins a majority of districts it gets all the electoral votes of that state for the presidential race. For the senate and house race it's state wide election that elects 0, 1 or 2 senators (wich is not proportional to population). Let's say I run a third party. If I want to elect a president It's impossible because the other two parties are really well established (would need 33% of districts). If I want to elect a senator, I have to win an entire state (50% of that state) wich is not really manageable. If instead I had to win a small portion of that state (let's say the state is divided in 8 and each part elects a seneator) I could get a senator elected with 6.25% of the votes in a state. Much more easy now.
      This causes voters to not even considering voting for a third party. Why vote for the party that represents my ideas if there's 0% chance my vote will be meaningful? People then tend to vote to block a party from winning.
      In alot of other democracies a party can get 1 representatives (or more) elected with 4% of votes. That brings money, media coverage and political power to that party. Wich in turn brings more votes.

    I'm a Chinese immigrant and I hate Trump, but on the illegal immigration issue, I have to side with the Republicans. While those of us who respect and abide by US's laws, earn our degrees, pay our taxes, wait years in line to earn our citizenship, there are millions of illegals that just casually marches across the border, violate the laws and cut in front of the legal immigrants. This is not right, this is not fair. Democrats should side with the Republicans on this issue and stop the illegal immigration, while the Republicans should agree with the Democrats to increase LEGAL immigration based on individual merits.

    It'd be really nice to see the WSJ provide a good-faith representation of the economic theory + resulting policy proposals of the Republicans/Democrats instead of a piece like this that is heavy on narrative / light on empirical numbers.

    • @PETERFERRER-x5h
      @PETERFERRER-x5h 9 місяців тому

      Empirical numbers say that over 1 million people have illegally entered the US between November 2023 and January 2024, all crossing the southern border.
      There is always much to be gained when playing sandbox politics, and that's what the Republicans are doing. If they had passed the bill in Congress and something had been finally done, they can't continue to use the issue in order to make Trump more attractive to voters in 2024, and because people have the attention spans of Golden Retrievers, they're not smart enough to see that that's exactly what's happening here. This piece just elucidated that and it went over your head too, judging from your comment.
      If they wanted to fix the border it could have been done several times over since 2007, but politicians will always want to add their pork into bills, both left and right, because they honestly don't care about us.

      You don't understand the bill. 5K/day is the maximum number of people who will be given asylum hearings, not the number of people who will actually be allowed into the country. Most asylum claims are rejected after they are heard, the problem currently is that we don't have the capacity to hear them all, so people stay in the country while they wait for their hearing, which can take months or years.
      Also, 5k/day is FAR lower than the current limit, because as it stands, there is NO LIMIT, meaning literally anyone who comes to the border is legally entitled to a hearing, which is the whole reason we have such a huge backlog in the first place.

    The issue with this bill is that NO ONE tells the people what the big sum of money is comprised of.
    20+ billion goes to border protection (which is the biggest investment in U.S. history, in border protection).
    The amounts going to Ukraine, Israel and S.A. Asia (Philipines, Taiwan etc.) is comprised not of MONEY, but ARMS.
    Arms with expiration dates.
    No one explains that most ammunition has chemicals which expire, and they need to be replaced (normally, they would be dismantled (WHICH COSTS ACTUAL TAX MONEY)).
    Explosives, rocket/missile fuels are chemical components with expiration dates. Some arms have gasses which leak. Some arms have chemical paints which expire.
    Even artillery rounds and some types of bullets (you know your 2nd ammenments right...???) expire. When they expire, they can be unreliable and even cause friendly casualties.
    So they give these ammunitions and equipment to allies (Like Ukraine and Israel). They go into the books as "sums of money" (which they are not).
    Media and politicians are as dumb as the population.
    They keep them dumb even. Inform the people.
    Problem solved.

If a young man claimed to be under 17 he was counted as a minor and not included in the numbers. It’s like saying you solved child abuse by eliminating the age of consent. I read other criticisms of the bill. This report seems to skip all of them. I thought WSJ was a conservative news source not even one item that show some flaws in this bill. They also initially tied billions of more aid to Ukraine. They submitted a bill they knew republicans wouldn’t pass just to say the republicans are the problem.

If the democrats were truly interested in border security, they wouldn't be engaging in a catch and release policy. It is difficult to get into this country legally and it should be. It is a simple way to measure each individuals capacity to do well in our country. If a person can make it through our process, they have a far greater chance of succeeding in our society, without a lot of hand holding. And illegal immigration should be met with zero tolerance. Republicans got a great deal but rejected it because it’s the only policy they know how to run on. Fixing the issue would mean they would have to have some other policy to run on, that’s a lot of work. Easier to keep rehashing the same issue for decades.

And you expect Trump to just accept that and then not campaign on fixing this mess? That doesn't make any sense. The Posse Comitatus Act. Legally they can’t unless directed by Congress or there’s a declared national emergency by the President in which he can order federal troops to respond to the national emergency.
      However, the National Guard, while they’re under the direction of their state can perform law enforcement duties and often are deployed by border states to bolster border security.
      Still the federal military provides logistical support to the Border Patrol, ICE and U.S. Coast Guard.

    The US needs a complete replacement of all sitting politicians, from POTUS all the way down to school board members. 100% reboot. Changing a few faces at the podiums every couple of years is a practice in futility.
    Like term limits for the House & Senate,

    You lacked to mention that the reason that the Republican Party voted against this bill is bc the majority of the money for this bill was to go to Ukraine and the bill was named immigration bill.

      time and time again they eventually keep voting yes to ukraine aid. So they are still going to allow foreign aid on top of getting nothing for it. A huge failure on the Republican's part.

      Wasn't that literally the deal though? Tougher border politics (negotiated by a Republican, with democrats relenting on almost every points) for more Ukraine support funds? Or did Republicans forget that a deal goes both ways? Or could it be that someone told them not to vote for it?
