My wife and I actually just gave it a shot for the last 30 days and used this video when starting out..I tried to document as much of it as possible actually, we wound up hitting a little over $1k our first month. awesome video man and thanks for the tips!
Any tips / advice ?
That's awesome! Congrats!
where do you sell the candles?
where did you sell
This was great, been searching for "are jo malone candles made from paraffin?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Panlijah Inconceivable Position - (search on google ) ? It is a great one off guide for discovering how to become a candle making master and turn a profit without the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my m8 got cool success with it.
Real credit goes out to you for making a video that’s trying to help others. May God bless you for that.
Yes, Thanks So Much !!!
I want to sell my candels am from india any buyers are there plz inform me by ramyayg59@gmail.com
Yes, Thank You for sharing your experience with us
Jeff, If this video doesn't inspire people to get busy, I don't know what will! Thank you, it gives the moral a boost!
Jill Gross thank you so much!

This. Freaking this right HERE! THIS is how videos should be made. The very basics, without trying to shove everything they know down our throats (trying to feed us meat before the milk, in a manner of speaking.) I've seen videos an hour long or longer where WAY too much was given, with a thousand different methods/products to sell, and it was overwhelming, just way too much.
But this, this was short, informative, basic and to the point. Freaking finally! Well done and thank you for your video!
Thank you for your willingness to help others. This week, I've decided to start selling my candles and found your page in my research. Most people wouldn't share their knowledge. I look forward to watching more of your videos.🤗
How is the business going
I messed up in two spots here! Lol
The profit on the 8oz candle is $7.40 and I put $7.20
I also doubled the profit from the 8oz instead of actually using math.
The profit for the 16oz candle is $12.80
You would need to sell five more 16oz candle to meet the $1000 profit mark 😁
It should also be noted that these are all approximate costs and not exact by any means.
Thnkk
Thanks
Makes sense that the 2.60 is your cost to make (COG), I am assuming that the $10 sell price is your retail selling your self. Have you worked out a wholesale price into your price points for those that would like to sell to a local store for resell?
Abiquiu Soapworks I have wholesale prices workout for mine. I will have to put out another video specially talking about retail locations and stockist purchasing
It’s okay!! You have given us so much great information . If people won’t take the time to do their own math, by no means should they go into business. Thank so much for sharing your knowledge!! It’s really appreciated 😊
The selling of them is the hard part. Getting outlets or markets to buy your product.
That's why most sell at fairs, and online instead of trying to get a business to buy their products
start at local craft fairs. at least near me people love them and most people know me so I think they buy just because of that and then they tell their friends and things grow from there. if you make a good product of course.
i just came across candle selling very recently and watched a ton of videos in the past week. and i have to say what amazes me the most is how many men are into candle making! i really don‘t know that many men who actually like scented candles so this was quite unexpected to me 😊
That's what I thought until I went to a market and all my customers where women! I think men - including my bf - like candle business because you can actually easily make good profit 😀
I like candles so I can make my place smell nice for my gf. I'm planning on making them not to sell but just to save money on all the scents I buy and give out as gifts.
I like these numbers. This video really drives me into this business. It’s affordable and the process is easy to do at home after work or on the weekend like you said. Thank you!
I love how you are always Helpful and sharing info even if it is off a little nobody’s perfect. I could definitely use an extra 1000. Continue making great video and people need to do their own research and do what works for them. You’re the best!
Erica Bridges Thank you so much!
Thank you for the inspiration. I was feeling a bit low because of financial well-being and this video has given me a boost.
You're welcome and go for it!! Start small and grow it.

I have worked at the same place for seventeen years now but recently I have really been interested in starting something small on the side apart from work. I would honestly love to eventually go to part time or be successful enough just selling candles so I can spend more time with my kids. So I really appreciate your expertise in this. Glad I found your channel. Thank you.
This can also be apart of a line of other handcrafted products which adds to the profit. I have been making soaps, salts, bombs for years. By themselves a hard sell but combined increases profits. Thanks!
Have you ever thought of making an online course for making and selling candles
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. You will stay blessed.
“Each one teach one”
I believe I just saw his candles on Amazon handmade. I work for Amazon and used to seek my body care products I made in my nail shop years ago so decided to start up again now that the kids are basically grown and thought why not sell at Amazon while I work for them too. Checked out the handmade section and this guy's products were on the site. Awesome
Have you made a video showing your setup: curing area, fragrance organization etc. I am trying to get organized....I need help. :)
Kelley Robbins Kind it but I will go over it in depth in a video
I make candles as a hobby. Just for fun and relaxation. But I am definitely going to incorporate this into a full business. Thanks for sharing.
I have been wanting to start candle making for profit as a business for quite some time. This video actually was very educational and I appreciate you being candid and realistic about the hard work and effort which gives a true expectation. Thank you !!!
So glad you made this video I am a beginner I have not started to make candles yet I am doing research and looking at a lot of videos here on UA-cam which is saturated with candlemaking I am definitely going to get started I know I won’t be selling right away but this video will help me
My wife and I are going to give this a go!
Love that you're always willing to share your knowledge. Thank you 👍🏽
I appreciate that!
True, that is nice but there is a reason he and others that also do sell the supplies. It's helpful yes, but also an infomercial in a sense.
This is great for a person who thrives under the pressure of meeting sales on top of the labor that goes into marking the product
You did perfect ❤ I'm going to give a shot because I truly need I'm so new at this
Thank you! Caught your video in the middle of the night. Great moral boost.❤❤❤Off to making my $1000.00 now.
It's from the 17yo teen that got 1mil dollars from this business!
A business that i never thought it's gonna be that BIG
This has really inspired me to start making candles - I'm currently 18 in college (UK College) and am not enjoying my part time job and this will definitely make a great hobby. Great video!!
As someone who owns a candle business just be aware there is lots of competition. Find a way to make your product unique, give customers a reason to choose your candles.
@@lamsmiley1944 Agreed, just go online and you see tons. That's why the creator of the channel and other who give advice actually run stores that sell candle supplies. There is less competition there. There is a reason why they are giving advice how how to make and sell candles not on how to sell candle supplies.
@@h2t26 we’re actually considering getting into selling supplies next year. It would reduce our cost of goods sold and add another revenue stream.
@@lamsmiley1944 Absolutely, expanding is usually the way to go. Good luck, that area is also expanding. As I see more and more channels they have several places they get their supplies and every once n a while I hear a new name so, ya best start as soon as you can before it gets overcrowded.
@@h2t26 is it too late to start now 😭
Thank you for sharing this. It may sound silly, but I just want to sell candles so that I can continue to make them and have an outlet for my hobby. There are only so many candles that I can burn in my own home. This gives me hope that I'll be able to at least cover my own costs, and make a little bit on the side.
great plan, but oddly enough it sounds like a drug addict..lol.
I am so glad I found you. Thanks for your time what an asset to my newly found business opportunity
Joyce Reynolds I’m glad it’s helping 🙂
im thinking of starting a small candle company, really in this day in age its all social media marketing. I just so happen to own a media/marketing business. ; )
You're ahead of the game then! :)
Do you have a website for your marketing? Thank you
I am getting ready to get in that business, and your videos are great! Thank you for your help and may God bless you always!
What goes into making candles? Is it the same creation process for all types of oils and waxes? (I.e boil and chill time) or is it all different?
Id love to see a video on precise steps to take to make the perfect burning candle.
This is so cool! I really wish you had been around when I was starting out back in 07 when I started. Great video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge man. Very cool.
Theres a lot of work involved . A lot of hauling , loading unloading ,set up,unloading again ,. Wrapping is real important too.Tappers unwrapped pick up a lot of grit at a dusty market.. Testing is way important as well ...and time consuming but very important .so many different kinds of wax and then each one may have it's melting point it's own temp . Not to mention it's own type of wick depending on size .Believe it or not ,most people are ignorant about candle safety so for the sake of ethics you should put warning labels on them and always remind them not to go to sleep with a candle burning never leave them unattended especially if they have pets as one swipe by a dog tail and it can wind up on the floor etc . tell them to keep the wick trimmed and never set a candle on a shelf to burn it ..give it plenty of overhead like 6 to 8 8 feet over head etc.
Thanks for this! I think people benefit from this type of high level budget.
Thank you so much for this video!!!!!!!!
I can't express my gratitude enough. I needed simple news right now.

Chris and Shana Thank you for watching! I’m glad it helped.
Looking at your channel and seeing if you were actively posting videos, I had to subscribe as it feels like I just meet my first business partner. Nice to meet you!
Chris and Shana Thank you for subscribing and I’ve got new videos coming this week!! 😁
Thanks so much for this helpful video
Thanks so much, i was just wondering how to sell candles on the side
A 16 oz candle sells for $20. This translate to 50 candles per month. Assuming 10 candles/day, that 5 days or 40 hours of labor. Assuming cost of goods of $200 (ie 5x mark up), that’s $800 for 40 hours which is $20/hour. This is slightly above minimum wage.
Could you make a video for people just starting out on how to sell during the pandemic seeing as how farmers markets aren’t really a thing right now and large gatherings can’t really happen. 😀 Great information by the way
Thanks for the info. I do see that your candles have gift boxes (another cost) labels (cost of printing and design?) wicks?, etc. Then you have the booth or vendor fees plus your time and gas. I think the profit would be a bit lower if every cent was counted, including the shipping costs you paid to get your materials, if any. It's still pretty good, though - perfect for a hobbyist .
Jar 40c, wax $1, box/label 60c, shipping 30c, gas 10c, wick 10c=$2.50 for materials etc for 8 oz candle.
Possible to cut the cost lower than $2.50.
@Standley Handcrafted Thank you for your videos! You've put so much work into them. What's the best way to pack the candles for shipping? And how do you factor in a buffer for returns and breakages?
Thank you very much for taking time from your day to make these informative videos. They are very helpful and give us newbies hope for our candle making business!
😊
Thank you so much for watching them
I definitely love this videos are very helpful and informative, please make more videos like this 👍
This is an awesome idea, I'm so happy that you are sharing all this knowledge.
Lisa Laundry I’m glad it’s helping 🙂
great channel! so i have a request for a video. I see many candlemakers using mica in there candles and as all websites that sell it say this is NOT recommended because it will clog the wick, but those candle makers seem to be successful on their etsy websites so would love to see an experimentation whether it really does clog the wick or if a small amount doesn't effect it. . I'm looking to use something sparkly in my candles but haven't found anything yet that is recommended :(
good idea!
thank you for this video. I was looking for the cost breakdown
Covid is not making me able to work but it's opening my creative mind and candle business came to mind :) it's fun and easy but one must take regular precautions
I can't wait to make a great candle so I can sell. I just haven't found the right wax/wick combo. I'm on fixed income and would welcome the extra money. I need to get insurance and business license after making the perfect candle that I can sell. Tomorrow is another "test" day.
Mary D You’ll nail it be selling in no one. I hope the rest goes well. 🙂
Great work your making American 🇺🇸 great
Thanks for the video I do appreciate the time it takes you to film and edit this for us all. At some point could you make a more in depth video on this topic? Something that discusses business license, farmer markets booth fees, packaging cost, taxes, freight cost on your raw materials, advertising (website, literature, flyers), etc. With any business there is a lot of behind the scene cost that most people don't think about. I was just curious as to how much other expenses goes into a small candle making business with one or two employees. I also know a lot of this will depend on your local area and the quality of your product as well but I was just wondering as a ball park and to get some insight. Thanks again.
I would love to go further into detail on this one. I am trying to get a full list of items together and see what differences there are for different states.
Thank you for this
I want to start but not sure where to begin. This was helpful. In the process of figuring out where to go
Wow, my brother and I used to make just for fun! I had fun
Thank You. This was very informative. I Appreciate it! I’m also following on FB&IG.
Thank you so much 😊 for you video ! I loved everything you said and explained it was perfect !
I found a great tutorial online for making candles: HootCandle.club
I recommend you check it out
Love your videos! What size of candle do you find sells better? The 8oz or the 16oz?
Love it. In need of more
Hi Standley and thank you for this video! It's a very good help!
Great Video! I've been selling candles since July 2018. My biggest issue is having the money to fund my business. I work so I have been using my paychecks to fund my business. How do you or have funded your business? Did you take out loans, did someone sponsor you? I need help in this area.
ClassyChic Candles While I had a full time job I used my own money to start buying supplies. Once i opened an online shop I began making back the money I spent on supplies and a little extra, from there it gets easier and you will know what supplies to get instead of wasting money on trial and error.
fullofcharlotte would you share a link to your online site?
@@fullofcharlotte Ok Thanks so much!!!
Bravo for keeping it real..., love the no fluff and honesty!!!
I sells online and have a Retail Space I been wanting to add candles to my Bath and Body Product Business

I've been thinking about supplying lavender oil to makers like you, interested?
Thank you for a great honest video. I am so grateful for you and your encouragement. Blessings
Thank you thank you thank you!! Literally just stumbled accross your channel your advice is so helpful. New sub😊
Hi! Thank you for sharing your tips & tricks, it’s really informative. I have a question over from the UK - 1. How to stop soy wax from frosting & also what is the best way tip to engage with other stores especially if you work full time and candle making is a side business with the aim to make it a full time business
Do you carry business insurance? A video about the logistics of that would be neat.
I just started a candle group and by far my friend? You are inspirational
Do you have a website yet?
I am SO glad that you are good at math! My head swims with all those numbers flying around. Does Kiki have the night off?
C LM I messed up the numbers a little but it was close 😂
@@StandleyHandcrafted Trust me, you are closer than I would have been. ;-)
EXCELLENT, thanks 👍💯😉
Great video. We are in the process of expanding the honey/bee business to include candles and other wax products.
Do you need a DBA and if you sell to a store, they would mark it up so do you give a store a discount price when they buy? What kind of wax do you use and how would i be able to find good quality wax and jars and how do you find a good price on supplies?. Thanks, this was very informative
Great job Standley.
I've just been going over materials and shipping costs. On average how many candles would a 10lb bag of 464 make? I can't see materials for 100 candles being as low as $244 or whatever price you listed. Thanks for your time, great video.
Depends on the size of candles because you can make any size. That math can be calculated after it's in liquid form I believe. I used Google and it broke it down for me on the candle science website. Any questions I had and asked Google that site popped up so I trust it. Hope that helped.
thank you for sharing, new subscribers here, I’m interested. Do you have video how you buy materials.. and making candles?🙏
I like the practical information.
Very informative! Thanks.
I want too. I like making these candles and you share a lot. Thank you
How many hours does it take you to make 100 candles? To make, start to finished with labels (not including cooling hours of course)
It depends how quick you are. My business had an order for 375 candles for mothers day, that took us about 20-25hrs(we weren't particularly quick). but with smaller candles we can make 100 within 5-6hrs.
What license/permits are needed to sell at farmers market? Also I truly appreciate all of your videos.
Nineteen & Co. Candles Candles Depends on the market but usually a city license and business license.
great video, great cat
Thankyou so much Your always clear about what knowledge you have appreciate it
How do you figure in the cost of packaging or is that included in the amounts you quoted?
Cost of packaging should always be included in the cost of materials needed to make your product.
sounds like no packaging or shipping since they'll be selling locally
Great video....I have looking for a video like this. Thank u 👍Subscribed ❤
Wow...that is so informative. Just 100 candle can get $1,000.;I love it. Thank you.
Is selling candles your full time work?
mr standley gracias por explicar como estodo yo nececito saber mas gracias por su ayuda
Standley Handcrafted Hi love your videos, learned so much already. I really want to try wood wicks but have no idea which wood wick to buy for a 8oz tin 444 natural soy.
Candle making is a booming industry dominated by one brand really, in UK NEW (post 2019) legislation states you need CLP labels and formulation of fragrances accurately measured due to allergies (tested professionally). If your from the UK I wouldn’t recommend investing money as the start up costs due to the legislation is ridiculous, thousands...
Wow, I can understand the reason but damn. Maybe people with bad allergies shouldn't buy candles. Like I get peanut and stuff cause that can kill you but a candle? Sometimes we just can't have everything.
This a beautiful video. Could you do packaging and shipping cost for the cheapest option please? Thanks in advance
I will definitely make a new video in shipping. Especially with all the changes that have been happening.
@@StandleyHandcrafted Thank you, I appreciate that. Currently binge watching your videos. Will be losing my, so will be looking for a hustle this way. You videos are amazing. Appreciate all of the tips.💟
Question 😃 How do you keep the candles from melting when selling them at the market in HOT summer months outdoors. This is my first video and thought what a great way to supplement my finances as a stay at home mom..but i live in Texas and its been 95 to 102 degrees.

I'm in Louisiana and we have been hitting temperatures of 95 and above for the last few weeks. I definitely need help on this one, also.
@@healingwaterscandlesbarbar8548 I know. Same thing for me in New Orleans.
Maybe you could keep your stock in an ice chest or cooler? Lol! This is kinda off subject but I was in Vegas one summer and people were selling bottles of water on the sidewalk. They kept them in big coolers they dragged up there full of ice. The water was selling like hotcakes and it was nice and cold. In Vegas it was 115 in the shade.

How many candles does a person use per month, 4- mostly at night. I would buy supplies.
to refill the candles jars, if to my benefit. I made candles when I was young.

I'm from Brazil and I would like to know if in the EUA it would be possible to sell the candles downtown and in other gathering points in general, like carring a bag or a basket ! Here is very common selling this way
Which wicks have less odor as some indicated that these give off an overpowering odor? Also, can I use any vegetable oil instead, which one produces less odor?
