My 1988 ranger 2.9l has the same problem I’ll drive it for like 10 mins and it’s starting smoking and I looked and saw it had oil on manifold’s I thought it was a cracked block or sun stupid but no my grandpa come and looked and said it needs bell cover gaskets so he bought me 2 so when I go back home ima hope it fixes it
I use Testors paint pens to put some orange paint on the harmonic bal mark, and then some yellow on the timing case cover marks... As the timing light hits the marks the paint makes them stand our like a sore pecker!
If you still haven't fixed the idle problem when you get done rebuilding it check the vacuum canister on the firewall, my grandfather said his truck done the same thing yours done and got so bad it wouldn't start period and he sold the truck thinking it was major and when the guy came to get the truck he put a new vacuum canister on it and drove it off
Man, talk about rubbing salt on an open wound!! That sounds legit though. I have never replaced a vacuum canister in any of my vehicles so I can not right say it is the problem.
Yeah I had a 97 Isuzu with a 3L v6 and it wouldn't stay running because a vacuum canister was clogged up, I cleaned the canister and it ran good until the fuel pump died, idk why something like a vacuum canister would cause so much problems but they do, my dad had a 88 f150 that done the same thing as RDAllens, and my papaw said he put a vacuum canister on it, and it ran like a brand new truck, until it jumped time,
Are you talking about the vacuum canister for the fuel tank? If so mine was completely clogged off in the intake, pretty sure it has been that way for a long time. It is open now that I have it cleaned up, I have no idea if the canister is any good though.
+RDAllen I'm not sure what it's for all I know is it should be on the firewall, when I heard it running what it sounds like to me is that it's not getting enough air to the motor, that could also explain the backfiring gas not being burned in the engine gets pushed into the exhaust where the heat ignites it basically

Valve
Oh yes, if you have oil leaking from the valve covers that oil will get on the exhaust manifolds and smoke like crazy!
Where did you put the rtv silicone on the lower intake manifold?
If I recall it is over the spots where the gaskets join.
Who else sees 3 40mm down draft webers?

I agree it is not getting enough air, the question is why though!? I'll have to check that fuel canister.
Cover up that intake you don't want to find out the hard way that you just dropped something into it. Ask me how I know lol. Good video
good video
Thanks!
Looks like a pain makes me not want to change gaskets and just fill oil every week
Mild pain yes!
Do you have a twitter?
yes
