Louis Jordan was around 58 years old when this was recorded. Pretty slick dance moves for someone that age.
Its not bloody ancient!
The great Louis Jordan! He started it all.
Even Ray Charles wanted to be him.
James Brown has credit Louis Jordan as an idol of his
@@DJWOLFLIVE Chuck Berry also mentions him as a major influence, and so does B.B. King.
The pride of Brinkley, Arkansas - Louis Jordan! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
8:20
Lois Jordan had it all - singer , musician, comedian and band leader par excellance!
...dancer, story teller...
Lewis Jordan should be remembered and celebrated more for his musical contributions. He was an all around player and the true pioneer.
Louis...not Lewis.
And under his correct name
Uncle Chris on the drums. His drum stool was a converted Harley Davidson Duo-Glide motorcycle seat. So he had lots of mobility when he was behind the set.
GREAT idea! Hope someone in your family has that drum stool. :)
@@johnnieguitar5724 Sorry, I don't know what happened to the stool or his last set when he passed. He played until he was 99 years old I believe, the world's oldest working drummer, working at the Showboat casino in Atlantic City. I still miss him, he was a warm and gentle man.
wow, he was your uncle? he was a killer drummer. should be more well known. he was one of my favorites.
@@marcogiovino7372 Thank you. He was a wonderful kind hearted man.
@@customkey I am not surprised to hear that. There's no way you can play like that and not have a kind heart. He had such an immense groove and swing feel. Nobody played a shuffle like he did!!! Thanks for your reply.
LOUIS JORDAN THE FATHER OF R&B AND THEN R AND R.
Louis Jordan! Amazing band!
He was definitely awesome. I made some artwork around his 78 recordings when a few accidentally broke. I treasure him and his musical contributions to a variety of musical styles.
Louis Jordan & His Tympani Five - the ground zero musical influence of more legendary artists than we could possibly name
It's good to see Freddy King and Gatemouth Brown, with "Gate" playing that white Fender Jaguar.
Hoss Man was one of the late night guys on WLAC radio with John R. Richbourg.
WLAC kept company to a lot of musicians riding home from work all over the South in the late 1960's.
That was fantastic. I never saw this show. Never heard of The Beat. Two of America's great performers. Thanks for sharing.
Man! The tenor man's got a cool pompydoo.
With all his great influence and his marvellous alto playing, to my mind he was a truly wonderful singer. He was all that!
At this late date, thanks ever so much for this pearl of 60s TV! ❤
His singing is exactly like his playing - except he does it with lyrics. I love his phrasing and inflections.
Thanks so much Rachel Cummings! This one the best shows. Louis Jordan is the link between jazz, swing, blues, and all of the 20th century music that followed. Great to see The Tympani Five jamming live!
I could listen to Freddie jamming with Gate all day and all night. Fabulous.
Have you heard the duet Gate did with Roy Clark...
I absolutely love Louis Jordan he is so talented and he always looks so happy!I love it!
"The kids came along and I gave it to them." Louis YOU ARE?WERE the greatest. And Chris Columbo was legend himself. Hossman was right,..you left those kids something to live up to.
This show is a treasure chest !!
Utterly Magnificent! Louis Jordan & his Fab band, just glorious. And then Freddie King AND Clarence 'Gatemouth Brown! Oh Happy-Happy-Joy-Joy!
First time I've seen Louis Jordan on a live video!!! How excellent is that?! Thank You Rachel Cummings, the !!!! Beat rules.
Brilliant, note the Hammond B3 organist using the bass pedals :)
Ditched the bass and brass, and now we have that heavy damn organ to load in and out every gig. Lol.
Seriously, it is indeed see an organist get to use his full chops. He should be wearing yellow socks like Jimmy Smith did at times.
How can people watch this amazing video and give thumbs down?????
There's no accounting for complete idiots Yuri.
I was amazed to find these old shows on UA-cam! Thanks so much, they bring back tons of memories. "The Beat" was shown on our local tv station at midnight on Friday nights in 1966. I was 12 years old and even at that age I was staying up to see this show, and I also listened to The Hossman and John R. on WLAC radio out of Nashville. Really great times.
some greats on here, love freddie king brilliant guitarist
Great share! Thank you. Louis Jordan certainly still had it all working his career.
I'm convinced Louis Jordan started choreography and playing instruments at the same time!!
Yeah, the original Morris Day & the Time.
You know who else I think was influenced by Louis Jordan, Jr. Walker.
Brilliant man the Legendary Louis Jordan that tympany five respect
Dig that crazy sax player with the pomp! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Louis Jordan LEGEND
Louis Jordan’s ‘Let The Good Times Roll’ was one of many great songs of his. Elwood Blues put it on when he and his brother Jake were in Elwood’s Chicago flat.
AWESOME!!! Thx so much, i've never heard before about this show and with Louis Jordan. Amazing!!!
Louis Jordan was AWESOME 👌🏾
What a show. Speechless.
Some legends in their prime, either established or in the making. Louis, Freddie, Gatemouth, and at 20:47, the great Billy Cox from the Jimi Hendrix experience playing bass in the house band.
THANK YOU for posting this show and series! I hadn't seen Mr. Jordan in the 1960s ON TV in color, EVER! Louis Jordan was an original. So many copied his style. Freddie King is the man! I know that I have seen more Freddie on another episode of this series. I LOVE the go-go dancers!!
Thanks so much for posting these great videos, Rachel. Lots of legends in one half hour. Louis Jordan, Freddie King, Gatemouth Brown, and of course Hossman Allen who was so cool. Most excellent.
Thank you suga, glad you like them :)
Not Billy Butler
RC! Your collection is a treasure trove of the music I grew up with. Thanks🎼🌹
Excellent.
What a TREASURE ! wow my favorites, Louis Jordan and Freddie King and Clarence Gatemouth Brown in the house band?? Saw Freddie at a blues festival with Taj Mahall and Paul Butterfield it was one of those "Lost Weekends" either in Rhode island or Conn. We lived in Boston... must have been 73? anyone know?
brilliant
I just got this DVD, Vol.4 ,episodes 14-17. Glad lad.
Thanks for posting this killer Louis Jordan performance!
Louis Jordan!! Rachel Cummings consider yourself hugged a million times!!
hehe Thank you h8jf1 :)
The great Leo Blevins on guitar from Chicago with Louis Jordan's combo.
Thanks for identifying him. He is great.
I just died and went to R&B heaven ....
Thank you suga for all the nice comments, they are amazing to watch aren't they? :) usually the odd clip appears on yt but I wanted to show those that weren't as popular or known to be heard and seen also :) also Thanks for the sub, much appreciated.
Rachel Cummings this show fills the gaps, in the story of 1960s R&B... check out British TV show Ready Steady Go... if you can find it as the rights are owned by Dave Clark, of the Dave Clark 5 fame...
there are several clips of that show on yt :) if you have time please do check out my friends amazing channel as I'm sure you will like some of her uploads if its the singers/groups you want to watch live (lip sync in some cases) :) ua-cam.com/users/ILMJXXX
Richard Brighton Amen!
TV like it should be!
I really enjoyed this episode this was smoking music performance. Thank you for sharing.
Sometimes this show seemed to forget it was 1966 and swing back to the '50s.
Hoss reminds me of Elvis in his speaking gestures.

Wonderful!!! Thank you!
That Organ was so iPhone. amazing tech
Thanx so much for posting this video!!!
Oh my, Louis Jordan was a musical genius. His band was tight, now I see where James Brown got his band's tightness from.
You know when I first saw soul train I thought that was really the first black music show but obviously this show The Beat was the first a forerunner if you will to soul train
❤
GI Jive is so true.
Louis Jordan & The Tympany Five started out in the late 1930's. Chuck Berry stole his famous Johnny B. Goode opening guitar riff from Louis' horn. Little Richard's "Keep A-Knockin'" was first a Louis Jordan & The Tympany Five number too. Louis had the line: "... I can tell you been drinkin' gin"... But Little Richard was marketing his music to a teenaged audience and wisely dropped that lyric. I'm wondering if that is the great Billy Butler with the stratocaster...? Anybody know...?
Sounss like he says Leo Blevins on guitar 15:27
@@rockinpelmet You are correct, sir... And I thank you.
Damn, Martha is hot! Plus she sure can sing!
Walkin' with my baby, she got great big feet
She long, lean and lanky
And ain't had nothing to eat
But she's my baby
And I love her just the same
Crazy 'bout that woman 'cause Caldonia is her name
Caldonia, Caldonia
What make your big head so hard, ma?
I love you, I love you just the same
I always love you, baby, 'cause Caldonia is your name
You know my mama told me to leave Caldonia alone
That's what she told me, no kiddin'
That's what she said
She said, "Son, keep away from that woman, she ain't no good
Don't bother with her"
But mama didn't know what Caldonia was putting down
So I'm going down to Caldonia's house
And ask her just one more time
Caldonia, Caldonia
What makes your big head so hard, ma?
Sittin' on the boat dock, playin' on my bongos
sittin' on it all day long
Sittin' on the boat dock, playin' on my bongos
sittin' on it all day long
Just watchin' the tide
waitin' for you to come home
Now, the sun is sinkin', slowly out of sight
Now, the sun is sinkin', slowly out of sight
You come back home, I'll keep sittin' all nite
Now the Moon is shining, from up above
Now the Moon is shining, from up above
Shining on me because, I miss the one I love
I see the Moon, the Moon sees me
Now Please Mr. Moon, don't you tell on me
Sittin' on the boat dock, playin' on my bongos
sittin' on it all day long
I been sitting right here, ever since you been gone
I see the Moon, the Moon sees me
Now Please Mr. Moon, don't you tell on me
Sittin' on the boat dock, playin' on my bongos
sittin' on it all day long
I been sitting right here, ever since you been gone
❤️❤️❤️
The guitarist in the band with the red guitar between Billy Cox and the drummer looks like Johnny Jones the blues guitarist from Jimi Hendrix's Nashville days.
Great Catch! Louis, Freddie, Gate AND Billy Cox. Wow! Billy works the whole neck and locks the pocket on that T-Bass.
Don't let the sun catch you crying,
Crying at my front door
You done your daddy dirty
And he don't want you around here no more
Don't let the sun catch you crying,
Lying at my back door
You done your daddy dirty
And he don't want you around here no more
You can cry, cry, cry
Yes, and baby, you can wail
Beat your head on the pavement
Hey, till the man come,
Land you in jail
Don't let the sun catch you crying,
Lying at my back door
You done your daddy dirty
And he don't want you around here no more
You can cry, cry, cry
Yes, and baby, you can wail
Beat your head on the pavement
Hey, till the man come,
Land you in jail
Burgundy mist!
oh man that creamy tone
Caldonia was in the key of Concert C
GI Jive from WW2 1944.
Napoleon Fuller on Tenor saxophone
Kenny Andrews on Hammond B3 Organ
❤ 8:20
Martha on vocals
GI Jive came out during WWII or Korean Conflict? The song itself is rap/Hip Hop.
Tympani 4 in this case !
Louis Jordan is the artist who influenced James Brown.
Leo Blevins on guitar
Chris Columbo on drums
Any idea who the tenor player in Jordan's band is?
That is Napoleon Fuller on tenor, Leo Blevins on guitar, Kenny Andrews organ, Chris Columbo drums
Louis Jordan: weird seeing a group in the 60s with no bass player.
Hammond B-3 organ player covers the bass w/left hand notes
@@petecornell2605 Yeah the second I posted my thought I wondered if that might be the case, like Ray Manzarek did in The Doors.
With his left foot! You can see him working the pedals n the wide shots.
FREDDIE IS B R U T A L ...
My sympathies to Freddie King coming after LJ and T5. An impossible act to follow.
Is that Cosmo Kramer on tenor Sax?
This is the G. I. Jive
Man alive
It starts with the bugler blowin' reveille over your bed when you arrive
Jack, that's the G. I. Jive
Roodley-toot
Jump in your suit
Make a salute
Boot
After you wash and dress
More or less
You go get your breakfast in a beautiful little cafe they call "The Mess"
Jack, when you convalesce
Outta your seat
Into the street
Make with the feet
Reet
If you're a P-V-T, your duty
Is to salute to L-I-E-you-T
But if you brush the L-I-E-you-T
The M-P makes you K-P on the Q-T
This is the G. I. Jive
Man alive
They give you a private tank that features a little device called "fluid drive"
Jack, after you revive
Chuck all your junk
Back in the trunk
Fall on your bunk
Clunk
This is the G. I. Jive
Man alive
They give you a private tank that features a little device called "fluid drive"
Jack, if you still survive
Chuck all your junk
Back in the trunk
Fall on your bunk
Clunk
Soon you're countin' jeeps
But before you count to five
Seems you're right back diggin' that G. I. Jive
in what city was The !!!! Beat recorded?
Dallas
Nashville Tennessee.
Brit spelling of Colour on the Clapboard?
Yeah, what’s up with that?
who's on organ?
Who is the organ player?
Mr. Kenny Anderson 🎼🎹🎼
@@robertbright2057 thank you
No bass player!
The Organists Mr.Kenny Anderson is playing the Bass on the Hammond Organ with the foot pedals.
@@robertbright2057 - Wish it was up in the mix. Chris Colombo still nailed the pocket single-handed, but if the bass was there - would have been even more awesome.
