Jumpin' Jive! Yes! Sweet! Louis Jordan recorded "Caldonia" in 1945. He definitely influenced Little Richard. Check out Louis Jordan "Keep A-Knockin' (But You Can't Come In)" and "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby" -- Fire! The Grateful Dead would play "Caldonia" sometimes in concert. The song is classic. For music from the fifties in that style, check out Big Joe Turner "Shake, Rattle and Roll", "Flip Flop & Fly", and "Corrine, Corrina"; Larry Williams "Marie Marie", "Dizzy Miss Lizzy", and "Bad Boy"; LaVern Baker "Jim Dandy", "See See Rider", and "Tweedle Dee" along with many others.
There's a reference to this song in History of The World Part I from Mel Brooks, who is a huge jazz fan.
He's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an Early Influence. Check it out when you come to the USA and go to Cleveland!!!

My late father was a big fan of Louis Jordan and his band. He would, still, quote lyrics from Jordan's hit songs decades, later. Long ago, I became a fan of this very entertaining band, as well.
That tenor sax is almost as big as he is. This kind of music was definitely the precursor to R&R.

Louis Jordan was a first chair Sax player in the best swing jazz band of the 1930's; that would be The Chick Webb Band.....Jordan is my favorite in what i call Jump and Swing....Louis Prima is a very close 2nd!! Both great musicians, and Entertainers. I have 5 or 6 Cd's of Louis Jordan.

He was HUGE in the 40s and into the 50s, I was late to the game of hearing his music but everything I've checked out on UA-cam is outstanding. And many of the pieces have, like this, performance clips from movies and shows.

Oh man, that guy was so amazing. Love love him on every level. He's got so many fantastic ones. I love his take on is you Is or is you ain't ma baby. Hard-headed just means somebody is very willful and stubborn and inflexible. And at the time it was a common trope that both women and men would say that about the other. Elvis Presley not much later had a huge hit with hard-headed woman. And I don't know about the lyrics so much as well actually hold on, it's pretty cleverly written, with a whole lot of Bible verses and tropes incorporated. But at any rate I love it musically it's pretty much rockabilly with a good horn section and it's crazy and it's early. Here it is.

So, this film was made 76 years ago. Let's reflect on that!
The raw energy, the overtly testosterone tone, the musical virtuosity, the sense of rebellion and the disregard for prevailing conventions of performance - all things that the white rock and rollers adopted and further developed. Artists like Louis, Big Joe Turner and Fats Waller all had these attributes in some degree and the net result is that their music and to some extent their filmed performances still appeal to us today. Big Joe's "Teenage Letter" for example is over the line from jazz and into proto R&R.
Caldonia borrows lyrical ideas from the song "Your Feet's Too Big" which was a 1930s song recorded by lots of people - perhaps most notably by Fats Waller in 1939.

A lot of women, and men, were thin back then, because there was a completely different diet, and money was less. He is saying she is not all that open to his advances, when he is talking about her hard head. And yes, the women in the background and on the piano are just as important as the music! Not only a sax player and singer but he wrote this too! I first encountered him on a 1965 Ace Of Hearts (Decca) re-release of his album "Let The Good Times Roll" originally released in 1956. This album was a collection of hit Decca 78s from the 1940s and I was immediately drawn to "Beans And Cornbread" ua-cam.com/video/6yy6qICUTe0/v-deo.html which starts off as a gentle little ditty and ends up as a parody of a revivalist meeting.

Although I love jazz from the 50s I didn't know Louis Jordan. I can hear why: it isn't jazz, it's instrumental R&R. So why not try sometimes the real jazz giants of that time: Count Basie, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Stan Getz etc...
