  • Gibson says the graphic battle scenes in 'Hacksaw Ridge' are meant not to glorify war but to convey the magnitude of the danger faced by the soldiers fighting it.

    Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

    Apocalypto is still one of the most underrated movies to this day, IMHO. If any other director had done it, it would have instantly been declared a masterpiece. But, because it was Mel Gibson, it hardly got any recognition at all, let alone the accolades it deserved.

    As a child of a father who was a war hero, who later committed suicide because of PTSD, I'm grateful for Gibson to shine a light on our troops who risk their lives for us every day. If were going to give out awards, then we should have a ceremony for them, the true hero's!

    I know Stephen had to address the "elephant in the room", but you can see that Mel is simply not comfortable with talking about it and he never has been. As soon as he starts talking about his film and the story surrounding it, he lights up with passion and enthusiasm. I hope in the future the media manages to move on from what he did 10 years ago and focus on his art.

      olgil yes, it seems to be a very awkward and tense interview. I'm a big fan of Gibson, but I think that he has pulled the right strings in hollywood to be "forgiven", maybe that includes some of these interviews where he has to support the "elephant in the room". Hopefully is a matter of time until he can speak only about his wonderful art.

      Shawnee Anderson I know they always go over the topics ahead of time on shows like this, and it's expected that it would get brought up. I was just saying that I hope in the future he won't have to cover the controversy every time he does an interview. He's talked about it countless times and it's been so long, I feel that it's time to move on from it because he has nothing new to say about it.

    • @olgil
      @olgil 7 років тому +3

      Everyone knows talk shows are rehearsed, but that has nothing to do with what I was saying.
      I was saying that I hope in the future the media in general can put Mel Gibson's massive mistakes behind him. It was 10 years ago, yes what he said was gross, yes we all know about it. But he isn't comfortable talking about it, and I don't find it interesting hearing him still having to talk about it after all these years.
      It doesn't matter if it's rehearsed or not, I know that he knew beforehand that he would have to talk about it. That doesn't matter. I was saying that I don't want to read about it anymore in articles, see it talked about by news outlets, or see him talk about it in interviews. It's old news, and frankly boring. He has been re-embraced by the film industry after being a pariah for 10 years, so let him talk about what he is there to promote and actually wants to talk about.

    1. It's not in my place to judge someone I barely know, and only through cinematics.
    2. They live a life in the spotlight, and so everything they do is on display.

      A good interview always has to have hard questions, those are the ones the audience really want an answer to. At least imo.

And when they climb and the blood drips down....Because it's not some bogey man. That's a real life terror you're going into. Saving Private Ryan did a fantastic job of showing our vets hell in WWII going into D-DAY I'll saw Hacksaw Ridge truly showed what it was like for our WWII vets fighting in the pacific and taking islands. "I asked Mel to present this award for me for a reason. When I couldn't get sober, he told me not to give up and encouraged me to find my faith. It didn't have to be his or anyone else's, as long as it was rooted in forgiveness. And I couldn't get hired, so he cast me in the lead of a movie that was actually developed for him. He kept a roof over my head and food on the table and, most importantly, he said if I accepted responsibility for my wrongdoing and embraced that part of my soul that was ugly--hugging the cactus, he calls it--he said that if I hugged the cactus long enough, I'd become a man.
      "I did, and it worked. All he asked in return was that someday I help the next guy in some small way. It's reasonable to assume at the time he didn't imagine the next guy would be him, or that someday was tonight. So, anyway, on this special occasion and in light of recent holidays including Columbus Day, I would ask that you join me, unless you are completely without sin, in which case you picked the wrong f--king industry, in forgiving my friend his trespasses and offering him the same clean slate you have me, allowing him to continue his great and ongoing contribution to our collective art without shame. He's hugged the cactus long enough."

He wrestles with demons like many of us, but he's also the type of guy who wouldn't hesitate to take time out from his busy life to help RDJ. I mean, he really took him under his wing when RDJ was at perhaps his lowest place in life. And he never talked about once, never wanted a pat on the back that so many others would have savored. But most importantly, he's a brilliant filmmaker and I'm very much looking forward to his future projects.

    • @george_was_curious6710

      That's what he does. Colbert has a Ph.D. in subtle sarcasm and ball busting, and its almost always nothing personal; he just has fun with it. When you get a little free time, look up his interview with Eminem. The shit had me rolling.

    • @emmal429

      That is what parts him from let's say Fallon who laughs like a silly boy at everything the guests say.

      Colbert is a corporate tool, so he was trying to distance himself from Gibson in order to avoid any damage to his own reputation.

    Alcoholism and Anger. I wish to cure myself of these things as well.
    Update: day 21 of sobriety and clean, happier than I've ever been. I wish anyone who wants to free them selves from the disease of alcoholism, to get state insurance and seek detox and rehab, but the first step is that you actually want to change.

      Sure, there are some self righteous asshats that won't watch a movie because a guy who was involved in its production at one point said a thing they didn't like (spoiler alert btw that's every movie ever so to really live up to that dumbass standard you'd have to stop watching movies altogether).
      Normal people would watch the movie anyways if it looked like a good movie. But the decision wasn't made by the actual movie buying public. It was made by a few powerful people who bullied him out of the industry cause they decided that kind of thing is their decision to make.

    I never understood the self-righteous public condemnation of people like Mel Gibson or Michael Vick, particularly when otherwise beloved or ignored professional public figures like Donte Stallworth, Matthew Broderick, and Caitlyn Jenner ran people over with their cars and nobody gave a shit.

    • @brandonkylemarks
      @brandonkylemarks 7 років тому +6

      Todd Bollinger you don't understand how intent factors into when the public forgives somebody? I'm rooting for Mel, he's clearly an alcoholic and he's clearly struggling, but I'm think he can be a good person off the booze and under treatment, and his talent is boundless. How you can lump car accidents (whether dui or not) in with Vick, who did get many second chances and huge contracts I don't understand, malice has to factor into these things and

      But you gotta admit, what Vick did to those dogs is pretty disturbing. He killed defenceless dogs who were "underperforming" Imo the condemnation of Vick at the time was deserved and I don't even like dogs. But he paid for his crime, did his time, and got another chance at the nfl.

    • @Wooster77
      @Wooster77 7 років тому +7

      the difference is he insulted a certain group of people who not only control the media and influence public opinion, but consider themselves beyond reproach.

    • @CMontgomeryBurns09
      @CMontgomeryBurns09 7 років тому

      With regards to Vick, I would wager that if he had done the same to, say, cats, no one would've given a shit, least not nearly as much. Moreover, killing dogs vs. killing people is not comparable by *any* stretch in my view, malice or intent be damned. That's just my moral stance on the matter, but I didn't realize how much of a minority view it may be.

    • @seal3081
      @seal3081 7 років тому +1

      Todd Bollinger The dogs that survived have to go through years of therapy. So yes dogs aren't humans but I consider his actions to be punishable. And they didn't treat him killing dogs the same way as manslaughter because Vick is not in jail right now. I think most people have forgiven Vick. Vick should thank his lucky stars that he got a second chance at the nfl. But everyone has a different sense of right and wrong so I understand your opinion.
