Waterslide Decals are used a lot for Lego Star Wars custom minifigures. I've been trying to make one for a while now and this is just the video I needed. Thank you for giving me a simple explanation on how to do this.
I need to make a phase 2 bomb squad or a custom rex
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Finally a tutorial that actually told me which side to print on. Not even my paper instructions explained that.
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the demo! I need to make some custom decals for a 1/6 scale radio controlled car and this method is perfect for what I want to do! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
TIP: mirror print your image (only really necessary for designs with letters or numbers) then after soaking in water, place the decal FACE DOWN onto your project and the paper will slide right off of the decal with ease!! 😉
Omg! Thank you, newbies have massive amounts of questions (it's me). I was just looking for this answer😉
@@Marie-kz4hn you're welcome!!
So it would adhere from either side? and colour gets seen from "underside" of water slide too ?
@@chrisjackson8861 yes, the decals are clear. If you place it face down the paper backing comes off a little easier with less of a chance of wrinkling
@@pinkmosquito22 ok thanks! i guess too that the step could be skipped to "urethane" what was printed as it would be sealed?. i do plan on sealing the entire project once done anyways
That's what I make, decorated epoxied tumblers. There is a type of decal paper that you can buy, it doesn't need sealing with varnish. Cup looks great x
What type of paper is that
What type paper is that?
Su M-M , what type of paper is that?
A little late, but I believe the brand is Koala. It doesn’t require sealer, and works in both inkjet and laser printers.
Thank you thank you thank you for showing the blur effect thing. I was trying to print a decal for a tumbler and it had a blurred line around the whole thing that was not there in the original picture. Had I not seen that, that I had no idea was a thing, I don’t think I’d have been able to complete this project the way I wanted to. So thank you so much!
You're so welcome!! We're so glad this helped you!
Thank you for your kind and informative video.
Anytime!
thanks for the awesome video.
my questions:
1: is het it safe to drink from, because it's a mug and you would like to use it for the intended puprose?
2: is it dishwasher safe, or even safe when cleaning it by hand?
It is safe to drink from. We recommend sealing any decal like this. Waterslide, Viny, print then cut, etc. For this one I would recommend using Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge :) Then it will be dishwasher safe after it cures!
@@MakersGonnaLearn thankyou for your answer
Thank you. I am a newbie and would love to try these. Well done video. ❤️🇨🇦
You can do it!🙂
I love the way it came out and how you explain everything so much detail thank you so much
I've been looking for a video showing how to make decals! This would've been really helpful when I used to build model cars. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Rachel, Finally had time to watch. You are just the sweetest ‼️ you are such an inspiration I’m so new at this but you make it so I really think I can do this. Can’t wait to try. Thank you.
Thank you so much, Karen ❤

Can the mugs be placed in the microwave after using the acrylic sealer
What kind of printer do you use? Will an ink jet printer work?
what printer did you use? just a regular printer or a sublimation printer?
I want to use this for a Christmas plastic bulb and I will be using my cricut joy.
Not sure it this has been answered yet but what is the best thing to use to seal the Waterslide AFTER you have applied it onto the mug, plate etc. Can you use the sealant spray again? Will it be dishwasher safe?
Hello! So always seal the decals themselves before you cut them, and if you want to seal them afterwards on a mug, this is how we recommend to do so :) ua-cam.com/video/rRiSVUhEUa8/v-deo.html
Are u useing a app for the cannon printer on ur tablet or is it a wireless set up u can size it on tablet and send to printer,?
Hello! So, for Print Then Cut you would do it all through Design Space :) Design Space will be connected to your cutting machine as well as your printer :)
@@MakersGonnaLearn oh ok i was thinking of the printer i have i just got but i didnt actually know u needed a cutter too but ur video was very interesting and now ur advice was helpful too thank you for the reply i appreciate it happy new year to u, 👍
Sorry for the Newbie question, but I couldn't quite understand what you meant by moving the "stars" over a little bit on your Cricut before you printed your image. What are "stars" on your machine
?
the "stars" are the little white rollers that you see on the bar of your Cricut. They are easily slid to the side so that they do not smear the ink or make marks on your decal.
Does spray sealer have the same effect as epoxy? I’ve been struggling using epoxy. My molds have ended up sticky. It would be nice to use something easier!
I always put the waterslide picture face down when getting it out of the water its easy
okay! :)
What kind of printer is that? Do you need a specific kind of printer or with any printer work the same?
I have a few questions if anyone would have time to answer. I placed three coats of Krylon triple thick clear glaze, 30 min apart, on the water slide, placed it on a ceramic mug and it looks great. What do I do to keep it that way? I want to place it in the oven as another commenter said she does. Do I spray it again before I bake it? Just over the water slide or the entire cup? If I should spray it, how long should I wait until baking it? I know that’s a lot of questions but newbie here!
We do not bake ours. We simply let the waterslide paper dry, then add a sealer on it like dishwasher safe mod podge or epoxy :) Maybe someone else can give you advice on baking it! Good luck!
I love your accent‼️💖💖
Thank you! I'm just a bit southern, I'm sure you can tell haha!
Question, if you finish it off with the sealant, can the mug be washed in a dishwasher?
yes! Here's how we recommend sealing mugs: ua-cam.com/video/rRiSVUhEUa8/v-deo.html
Does there need to be a specific printer. inkjet or laser?
What kind of printer did you use?
ink jet it works great
There are both types. If you have a inkjet then you would buy the inkjet waterslide paper
I followed your video step by step for my first water-slide! Worked perfectly!!!
This tutorial was AMAZING! I cannot wait to try this.. I was wondering is there a way to take a portrait and use the water slide method to transfer to cup instead of having to use sublimation?
You an, just make sure you seal it really well once it's dry. Maybe with dishwasher safe mod podge? :)
When you’re printing the water slide image what printer are you using, like a sublimation printer?
I wanted to make a model of a game character but the details on the chest were to complicated to paint so this is great
Are they dishwasher safe? Can you use water slide method on dishes that are used for food?
They can be food safe if you seal them with Minwax Polycrylic: amzn.to/2KzC588 and wait the 28 day cure time, per the FDA :)
Thank you.
On sealing the finished mug do you have to put into oven so it won’t wash off after use
If you seal it properly after applying it to the mug you don't need to bake it :) We recommend several layers of Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge: amzn.to/354190H
Very nice.👍
Thank you!
What type of printer and ink did you used? Can any printer do this?
You can use the spray afterwards instead of epoxy?
If you'd like to seal this we recommend Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge: amzn.to/354190H :)
@@MakersGonnaLearn thank you!!
I followed all your directions using the same waterslide paper but when I went to cut it on my cricket machine it would not recognize the black lines to calibrate have you had this issue before and if so what can I do to correct it?
hey what Cricut machine are you using ? and what material setting did you set your Cricut machine to ?
I say all of this in the video :) Cricut Maker, Waterslide Decal paper: amzn.to/3eV4d3L . We set it to Kraft Board :)
Is this a good alternative to sublimating mugs? How long do they last?
very nice work. how long it will stay?
What happens to the rest of the water slide paper? Does it go to waste? Or can you print on scraps🥴 im very new to this
You can tape a scrap piece onto a piece of printer paper and trick your printer into printing on half sheets :)
Makers Gonna Learn Thanks soo much! I will do that 😁
Hello, I just have a couple questions. Can you use this waterslide paper as a car decal? If so, do you need to seal it after you print it? Can you use an inkjet printer or does it need to be a laser printer? Thank you!
No, we do not recommend this to go on cars. Here is a great video showing lots of different options for making car decals :) ua-cam.com/video/kJYedBe9fMA/v-deo.html
Thank you for the tutorial. Just got some water slide paper from amazon and haven't tried it yet but will soon
You will enjoy making this project! :)
@@MakersGonnaLearn I do tumblers so will be trying it on that 😀
The looks very interesting. You are really good at teaching.
Thank you! :)
Great tutorial!!! ❤️ I can't wait to try it!
Thank you for watching!
Once you seal it, can you use the cup to drink out of and can you use it in the microwave?
Yes, after the 28 day cure time the cup is food safe, dishwasher safe, and microwave safe :)
Hi! Thank you for the tutorial! Is the 28-day cure time only if we use mod podge to seal? What if we use polyurethane to seal the mug? Can we use it in the microwave sooner?
Can you do a video on how to print and cut using text? Everytime I use text my cricut cuts the letters all to crap. Love all y'alls videos.
Thanks!! What do you mean by "cuts all the letters to crap"? This could be a simple fix like make sure you're welding your fonts, or flatten a white square around your text...
Can you use sublimation ink for water slides? That's what I'm using and my images aren't bright like thy should be. What ink should I be using.
what are you going to seal it with? Is acrylic spray sealer safe for a mug?
Dishwasher safe mod podge: amzn.to/354190H
Makers Gonna Learn Is this used on clothing also? Newbie here
TIA
Can you do this with a normal printer or need a special printer
It's printed on a regular printer?
What do you seal your decals with after it dries?
Can we use any regular printer for this?
Yes! Just make sure the waterslide paper you get is for your type of printer! There are lots of different kinds :)
How does the decal do if you need to your glass bottle project in the dishwasher?
So, you'll need to seal these and let them cure for the recommended cure time which can be lengthy, but necessary if you want a good cup that lasts, sealing is the best option :) We would recommend this process: ua-cam.com/video/rRiSVUhEUa8/v-deo.html
oh wow, i've never heard of this. I know you can imprint an ink jet image to packaging tape and transfer it to glass. lol
Hope you find this video helpful :)
Please share how
Do you have to have a laser printer or will inkjet work?
I never knew you could print it on packaging tape
@@slay.everyday how
I have an Epson printer That I have turned into a sublimation printer can I use that to make these waterslide decal or do I need to buy another printer
What materials does the water slide technique on work on?
I like to say all "slick" materials. so like mugs and metal signs. License plates, phone cases, etc.
@@MakersGonnaLearn Awesome! Thank you so much! :)
Newbie here. I hope you can help me out. I'm trying to make a waterslide on my Ex Air 2. I did a practice on just a sheet of paper and all worked fine. But when I print the same exact picture on waterslide and go to cut I keep getting an error that it can not find the cut lines. Its not a big deal cause I can cut it out but if i want to do an exact cut in the future I wanna know how to fix it.
Hello!!! Great question!! This is most likely because you have so many coats of your sealer on there that the machine is having a hard time reading the registration marks. There are several things you can try to combat this. 1) try turning the lights off in your craft room. Glare from other lights makes it harder for the Cricut to read the registration marks. 2) Use satin or matte finish sealer next time, as they cause less glare than glossy and usually you'll have more success with the machine being able to read the registration marks. 3) You can use a gentle tape like masking, painters, or washi tape to cover the registration marks before you seal them and then remove the tape before cutting, so the Cricut will have ease reading the registration marks. Hope this helps!!
I have a Cricut Joy and have never seen a print and cut option . Is it because I have a joy?
Yes. The Joy does not have that capability.
We place it on a plastic bottle and it was great but When it dry we could just take it right off. What do we do to make it stay on the bottle for a long time?
We like dishwasher safe mod podge :) amzn.to/3dYJrjf
Thank you for the information we will try this. The kids will love it. Do you place before or after the water slide decal
So i used the modge podge acrylic sealer, and idk if i left it in the water too long or what. My decal still bleed. I even did 5 layers. should i have done more layers? Or use a different sealer? any suggestions....
If you used the same sealer we did you should not have had this issue. The decal should only be in the water a short amount of time. Maybe it's your paper brand?
So what are you sealing it with? You haven’t explained how to do they entire cup lol are you using mod podge, epoxy, baking it?
Here's another video ua-cam.com/video/nezTMc2UUSg/v-deo.html
Do I understand correctly that I don’t need to do the Minwax (or other brand) sealed on the pronged design if I print on a laser printer? Of course I’m using the water slide paper for laser printers.
You shouldn't need to seal at all if you have a laser printer with laser printer waterslide paper.
I used that sealer, dried with a tinge of yellow.🤷🏼♀️
Yes, it will do that, as ALL clear spray sealers will. Just a part of it, but not very noticeable unless you're holding it up to something stark white :)
Hello thanks for your reply.
I have another question, I have uploaded an image to my design space on my Cricut, when I ask it to print and cut, I get a message that says it’s not supported. I have no idea what it’s referring to.
@@bartcolom9461 usually the size is too big. Make it smaller
So Love this video! Made me really go out and buy this paper and try it. Seemed like it was going well BUT when I transferred my image it was very see through 😆 any tips on how to get it less see through?
Use white water slide paper. Not clear. You won’t be able to see through it.
What program would you use if you want to use this paper, have the photo you want to add, but want to create a saying above the photo, pick out your font, and be able to print say the same exact design and all for matching tumblers on one sheet of the paper. I could probably print three or four on one sheet, but I need a good program that will allow me to pick the font, make the logo and and the photo to it. Can you recommend a program? I just ordered a cricut, but I don’t have it yet and I am going to be learning all about it when I get it. But say you want to do a fancy font name about a deer head, and you want the font to have a curve to it above the deer head, what program do you suggest and in said program can you set it do do three or four per sheet. Help please. I appreciate you!

Do you still spray the decal if its going on a flameless candle or can it just be put without the spray
you always have to seal the decal before cutting. it's not for sealing purposes, it's for strengthening purposes.
What computer program do you use?
What kind of printer and ink did you use to print it?
Any Inkjet Printer with it's regular ink works :) We like the Canon Pixma's. amzn.to/2IvDG1h

@@MakersGonnaLearn can I use this on a clear mug?? Also can it still go in the microwave ?
Thank you for this! Can i use inkjet printer?
YES! Inkjet printers are the only printers compatible with Cricut print then cut :)
So you can not use a laser printer? I’m so confused. I have the Cricut explorer 1.
I would love to know how to apply a decal to the inside of a fish bowl. It will not be used for fish or have water in it. Thank you.
This will be very difficult as it is a curved surface. Also if your plan is to place it in the bowl to show through from the outside you would need to mirror your image and that causes problems because vinyl has bubbles under it when applied that would be visible.
Can you put the finished decal in the dishwasher?
once printed on once dose the rest of paper become waste, or unusable?
How do you know when to use the clear or white waterslide paper
Does it matter what kind of printer you print it on I have an inkjet?
Any Inkjet printer works great with it! :)
@@MakersGonnaLearn what’s the paper called exactly and where do they sell it
Putting on card stock setting for some reason doesn’t work for my cricut it would never read the lines. I have to change my settings to custom to printable vinyl so it doesn’t cut through the backing like yours did. I wish I could get it right. I have wasted many many waterslide papers
Hello! So the material you choose will have no effect on the Cricut being able to read the registration marks... Make sure to use matte spray and not glossy, or apply some washi tape to the registration marks before sealing, then removing the tape before cutting. This is because the sealer can sometimes be too shiny on the paper then the machine has a hard time reading the lines. Good Luck! Also, try the "kraft board" setting :)
What epoxy do you use to seal the print to the subject. Also is it the same for plastic bottles?
We like dishwasher safe mod podge :) amzn.to/3dYJrjf
Have you ever had a problem with the spin it water slide paper turning yellow after the epoxy is put on and dries I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong?
It's not the paper, it's the spray poly. It has a tint of yellow in it, even though it says clear. Just part of it :)
This is a great video thank you for sharing.

I brought waterslide decal but on the instructions it says to bake is that necessary? Also can i use krylon crystal clear acrylic coating to spray decal?
We have never baked ours, no. You can if you want to though! As long as it's a clear sealer, you can use it, yes :)
