In conclusion: 1 hour wait at Sheffield 2 hour wait at Retford Cancelled train at Doncaster Pitiful lack of bottled water All for a journey that can be walked in about 20 seconds. The pain you go through to bring us entertainment knows no bounds. Excellent video, Nick. Have you tried St Albans to St Albans Abbey? Especially if you included a not-via-London clause, that would be interesting.
The not-via London option is surely easier because you can just change at Bedford, take the other Midland shuttle across to Bletchely and change there for Watford? Via London you have to find a way of changing between St Pancras and Euston rather than just walking down the road: the Met service goes to Euston Road, not Euston, and the Northern technically comes out to Kings Cross.
@@quintuscrinis Euston Square I believe, but yes, you're right - though it would make an interesting challenge currently as there are no trains on the Bletchley-Bedford line at present - using the not-via-London clause, the best alternative route I can find would be via Leicester and Nuneaton!
@@quintuscrinis the Marston vale line is a replacement bus so at the moment it would be. 1. st Alban's abbey to Watford Junction. 2.Watford Junction to Milton Keynes. 3. Milton Keynes to Nuneaton 4. I'd Assumed looking at the title you'd do the short pointless trip from Sheffield to Meadowhall by train and then back via tram, and I couldn't have been more wrong - as a Sheffield resident, I can categorically say that is the most pointless journey in Sheffield, and it's brilliant.
Sheffield - Meadowhall and back on the tram would’ve been enough wouldn’t it? You’ll soon be able to do Blackpool North (tram) to Blackpool North via Starr Gate/Squires Gate; Kirkham & Wesham; Poulton-le-Fylde back to Blackpool North! 😜
I must say this video was absolute gold Nick! And you hit the nail on the head with Retford… I’ve had a short walk around there between trains and it’s indeed a very weird place in a weird and pretty ambiguous part of the country!
Another good video! Can you maybe do B'ham New Street to Moor Street next? Or maybe go down south again and do another pointless journey between Southend Central and Southend Victoria?
Nick, next time you come back down south, two pointless journeys you could consider: 1. Wimbledon National Rail - Wimbledon London Underground - Wimbledon Tram (in any order!) 2. Willesden Junction high level - Willesden Junction low level (or vice versa) (but since they are both, I believe, London Overground, perhaps not so interesting!)
Unlucky with the train connection times! Retford really is the end of the world there’s not even a Caffè Nero there!! At least the TPE service showed up - quite a miracle 😂 Another great video.
As somone from Retford, when I lived up in Liverpool for a year I had the same hour wait from EMR service to Lincoln service you did so I feel your pain. Also I'm not entirely sure where you went to buy water from as there is a giant Asda 10-15 mins from the station.
Bill Bryson described Retford as " a delightful and charming place even under the sort of oppressive grey clouds that make far more celebrated towns seem dreary and tired." But N. Pevsner thought it to be unattractive and lacking any distinguishing buildings. Weird!
Brilliant video Nick, that thing you witnessed in Retford whilst looking for water which there wasn't any at Retford sounds really crazy. Sorry to hear that you've had to alter the plan slightly because of a cancelled train. The Sheffield Supertrams are quite nice. :)
I went down memory lane here, I lived in Sheffield (some of the best years of my life) and worked in Retford (not that good time), that was my daily commute cheers Nick!

Very cool Nick. I literally just visited Sheffield for the first time ever today on the way to Brum, and while there took the tram from City Hall to near Kellan island. Reviewing my appalling pictures and even worse video, I really appreciate all the work you would have had to do in filming and presumed HUGE time in editing. Well done!

A good Pointless Journey for you Nick which could be interesting.. Burscough Bridge to Burscough Junction? 🤷🏻♂️ You know true routes better than me but I’d probably do Northern to Southport, Merseyrail to Lime Street via Liv Central, TPE to Newton Le Willows, Transport for Wales to Warrington Bank Quay, Avanti to Preston, then Northern to Burscough Junction. Could be costly but May gain some views?!
Yes, you're right. And what a lot of people do, to kill time while waiting for bad connection times, is spend as much money again on highly priced, poor value for money station snacks.!!! For those who are patient, a much better idea would be to wait, and have a wholesome dinner at some café or pub, later on. And they'll have to eat anyway, later on, regardless of whether they've been snacking or not.!!!!
The way I do it is that I explore towns, villages or cities if I have large connection times. Like a walk around the centre, visit a museum or a castle etc.
If you want to do similar in a different city, you could do the Jewellery Quarter by train and tram. I live in Birmingham and would glady accompany you for that one
Do a pointless journey from Birmingham moor st to Birmingham new st as it works as bus connects them with only one stop (exept for the 16) so it makes sence to do a pointless journey

Interesting pointless yourney from Gainsborough Lea road to Gainsborough Central and back ?
You could be many pointless journeys with the Midland Metro for example Five Ways trams to Five Ways cross city station.
