I've been many times to Sheffield Midland station when I worked on the railway, but I never dreamt that there was the river underneath, and all that assortment of tunnels and bridges going quite some way. That Megatron is completely stunning in size. The amount of building materials must have been colossal in the construction. It must have been quite difficult to fit Sheffield Midland station in amongst the city buildings at the time of its construction, only the original line of the North Midland railway from Derby to Leeds was much earlier and went via the east of the city. Very well filmed, Darren, and many thanks for this showing.
I am a from Sheffield but I didn't know about these tunnels. Sheffield is full of rivers and canals though and I still have quite spooky dreams of being next to a river with lots of discarded items in it. It must be due to peering over old walls to look at the rivers in the city centre and seeing trolleys, bicycles and tyres!
I often use platform 5A and wondered why there were wooden trapdoor style pieces in the floor. Thought they were good old cellar entrances lol. Knew a lot of the sheaf and stuff are under ground but I never knew they went straight under the train station - cool to see what’s under there!
I used to inspect all these culverts under Sheffield and Manchester as an engineer for the council. Always felt like Indiana jones inside these culverts!
Lived in Sheffield all my life and fancied the megatron walk each summer but never got around to it. having watched this I don’t think I could do it after all thank you for the virtual tour!
I used to commute to Sheffield to work . Been through the Midland station many times . Never knew all that was beneath my feet . Thank you for taking me with you on this subterranean journey . Thoroughly enjoyed it .
Brilliant explore. At least you had plenty company with you. You had a great time and thank you for taking us with you. Superb filming and documenting ad always.
I worked at Sheffield for 2 years. It was great. Some good restaurants and pretty city overall. I saw you walking at the station and it brought me many memories. I never went underneath. It was enjoyable to watch your video.
An interesting trip in the underground waterway. Always different from others I’ve seen. Thanks for the video, Darren. Always glad to see you again. Cheers mate!
Great video, fascinating underground infrastructure. As a water engineer I often see it on a map, but never in the flesh. Explorers see more of the tunnels than most of us do, unless lucky enough to tag along on a confined space expedition (with a damn sight more onerous H+S and a two day course...). I do believe, from a recent visit to the Blonk Street flats for the snooker, that the last few hundred metres of the culvert are to be de-culverted as part of a regeneration scheme for the horrible old 50s/60s derelicts at Castlegate Park. This video will then become an interesting retrospective!
Really enjoyed that Darren, Sheffield really does have some beautiful hidden gems. I've thought of doing the megatron tour myself and this has now made my mind up. Might wait till next year now though once the weather warms up lol. Looking forward to more videos from the fantastic Steel City
Brilliant 🤟🏻🤟🏻 well done to you all. Great video 👍, & yes I think if you're Anyone - You've seen the Patrick Dickinson video 🙏👍, great seeing Martin and James and all the family of friends 💯🤟🏻🙏👌🏻
I’m close to Sheffield and had no idea of any of this. That’s what makes your videos so interesting and educational Darren. Once again, fantastic video mate.
This is genuinely one of the most interesting videos I’ve watched in a long time! So engaging and informative! I never once though that all of this was underneath!!!
Last time I went to Sheffield was in may for a few beers at kelham island.. never knew about these tunnels under station .. mind u the train from Castleford passes alot of tunnels approaching Sheffield train station 👍
Cheers Daz for yet another excellent video. I had no idea it was like that under Sheffield Midland. I reminds me of the 'dark arches 'under Leeds station. Amazing to see all the original stone work still in place. Thanks again Daz 😁😁😁
MEGATRON !!! been down myself couple years ago. I wonder who gave it the name Megatron. The water level was quite high when i went down so cool to see it with a little less water.
Ahhh Sunday is complete 🥰 4:35 Jamie 😁 He’s ace Those arches remind me of when me and the wife went to see a once in a lifetime chance to go inside an old underground reservoir near Chorley, I think it was 2014/15 They were capping it off for good (new houses going on top 😢) We got a brochure from it and some amazing photos, and memories It was “back lane at whittle le woods) It was huge and the brick arches inside were so ornate. Fantastic video Darren, thank you 👍🏼
That is so cool. I heard that part of the Sheaf is going to be uncovered near Castle Market soon. I also learnt in the last week that the river is where the City gets its name from.
Great to see your take on this fantastic explore. Heard about the Megatron from Martins videos already so nice to see it in a different light. Only thing missing was James and a brew 🤣🤣
I'm really pleased you've come to my home 'City of Sheffield' makes a change to Leeds! I really hope you do many more videos here. Sheffield has a lot to offer. Brilliant video and a different outtake to Patrick's outing there.
Think I just saw Lord Lucan in the background . No seriously though how interesting, respect to the late Victorian engineers and the men who built structures like this .
Hi there this was very interesting as all your videos I think I have watched them all from Middleton to here you are a remarkable man and unearth things that have been nearly lost can I say just Thankyou for all you have done and will continue doing
Cracking video, thank you for posting. We have a few tunnels up here in Newcastle, I used to give guided tours of the Victoria Tunnel wagonway, also used as an air raid shelter.
Loved that thanks Darren. I’m disappointed that we didn’t get to see best part. Next time you fall please quickly turn camera around so we don’t miss it. Not that I would laugh, total fib I would lmao. The video was fantastic. The stone and brickwork were fantastic. Thanks for taking me along. Please stay safe and take care
on here ( tube ) there's a video of a guy in a dingy who paddled right down to the Don junction, used a big rock as an anchor to stop being swept away.... looked a bit odd carrying this inflatable through the streets though !
Hello Darren how are you love your vidio me and our Elaine got to Blackpool we enjoyed ourselves came home yesterday I have never been to Sheffield it looks a beautiful place you do a fantastic job you are amazing take care stay safe xx
And to think outside of Lego we can’t seem to build anything of a decent standard nowadays even with the technology and tools at our hands. Great video buddy cheers
I walk across that station most days to see friends, its so weird seeing my accommodation next to the buildings I go to uni in in a random youtube video
amazing our family were all from sheffield , we moved up to the north east of england just before i was born in 72,only remember redgates toystore and the market and an aunts house, my mum was chatted up by joe cocker in a bar and she turned him down lol one day hope to return to sheffield
Darren, that was a large group of explores. The maps on the left of the screen were great. Did I see Martin, James and Marcus?? The stonework is amazing, all the man hours it must have taken. The drain at 8:42, maybe that came from the Ladies and Gents train station toilets at one time. Looks like a real fun day you all had.....
Well hello there Martin and James 😂 great video as always, since watching your videos and martins I now have a deep love of culverts, might one day get to do an explore of my own 😊
Very cool. Surprised at the lack of graffiti. I always take a hard hat for tunnels, mines, etc. Makes it so much easier not having to crouch down so low, because a bump on the head from the stonework no longer matters....
You get yourself in some tight spaces Darren. Thought it was up Martin zero places to be. Then saw a brief picture of him at the end of yr vlog. Its Like a maze. Have to be careful you dont get lost depending on your route, or may not find yr way back. Very fascinating and historic, whats underneath the towns. A lot more cities and towns should open there's up, to guided walks. 5 * as always. Fab fab
Hi, Me and my brother Went down there a few years ago after seeing Patrick Dickinsons you tube vid. Interesting place to explore. That middle open bit was quite deep when we went through it. Anyway great upload enjoyed watching. just subscribed. 👍🏻.
there is a underground canal that runs under Doncaster railway station if anyone new about there is a way of getting in through a tunnel near the river
Well you chaps had a good day out. Always think it is such a shame rivers get culverted like this. Will see you friday night darren at Holmfirth civic, looking forward to it. 😊
Wow I didn't ever expect you to come to Sheffield, you should have a look at Sheffield's old town hall across from Sheffield castle market and Sheffield castle in the old Haymarket and exchange lots of history in the city, Sheffield is the 4th largest city in England.
I think it was a Martin Zero video I watched and commented about the entrance where the Sheaf went underground. Heavy rainfall followed and the screen blocked with trash. The water level rose so the station was flooded along with the boiler house in the sub basement of sheaf house.
I have lived in Sheffield for 84 years and never knew this was under the station, thank you. You are never too old to learn,

Interesting to note that the Victorian stonework and brickwork is still in such good shape!
Yeah all in tip top condition
And will probably last a lot longer than the way we build these days too.
I'm guessing some of the brickwork along the way is is probably pre Victorian
The large stone slab underwater floor will last another 500yrs.
Because back in the day people took pride in their work instead of "lets hurry so we can go to the pub and stuff an 8ball up our nose"
I was in sheffield in the late 80s early 90s when the station flooded. Now i know why. Thank you.
I am a from Sheffield but I didn't know about these tunnels. Glad to help. Thanks
John Shuttleworth doing a tiny gig under Sheffield Station - not even mentioned in the title! Mental!
I used to inspect all these culverts under Sheffield and Manchester as an engineer for the council. Always felt like Indiana jones inside these culverts!
What a fun job!
Lived in Sheffield all my life and fancied the megatron walk each summer but never got around to it. having watched this I don’t think I could do it after all thank you for the virtual tour!
Hope you enjoyed it!
Apparently under Lime Street Station in Liverpool there are vast tunnels like this too!!
And Leeds
And hull
I've done the Leeds ones
the ones in hull are the remains of the old gaol before it was moved and the original site turned into our current train station
@@markdonnelly962 What is a gaol?
I used to commute to Sheffield to work . Been through the Midland station many times . Never knew all that was beneath my feet . Thank you for taking me with you on this subterranean journey . Thoroughly enjoyed it .

Absolutely amazing to see what’s under Sheffield.
Thank you
Great exploration. This combines two of my favourite things: little known places and Sheffield.
Brilliant explore. At least you had plenty company with you. You had a great time and thank you for taking us with you. Superb filming and documenting ad always.
Thanks Shirley. I felt safe knowing there was loads
Thank you so much I'm from Sheffield and always love seeing the megatron tunnels and you done a first class video yet again
Thanks mate
I worked at Sheffield for 2 years. It was great. Some good restaurants and pretty city overall. I saw you walking at the station and it brought me many memories. I never went underneath. It was enjoyable to watch your video.
Have to admit, I really enjoyed our day out. Looking forward to the next adventure that Martin invites us on!
Thanks mate
I would like to get on one of these trips how do I go about getting on one?
An interesting trip in the underground waterway. Always different from others I’ve seen. Thanks for the video, Darren. Always glad to see you again. Cheers mate!

Some of the finest examples of brick making, and brick laying ever to have them last all these years....😃
Sure is
This was a particularly adventurous and entertaining episode. Thank you,
Thanks mate
Wow, I've lived in this city for over 10 years and I've never known this existed. That's insane!
Wow! That was so interesting, incredible to think what's below us. Great video 👍
Wonderful adventure you shared with us, thank you.
An encouraging lack of shopping trolleys too!
Really enjoyed that Darren, Sheffield really does have some beautiful hidden gems. I've thought of doing the megatron tour myself and this has now made my mind up. Might wait till next year now though once the weather warms up lol. Looking forward to more videos from the fantastic Steel City

Fantastic vid, as a Sheffielder I had no idea this was here, thanks a lot for showing it! 😊

Another enjoyable video - thanks. I’m originally from Sheffield and never knew about all that under the station.
Glad it was helpful!

Why's 'city of sheffield' in quotations like that?
Good vid. Loved it. Think I noticed Mr Zero and his mate Jamie there in the background as well.
Thanks mate. Yes they invited me
Been a while since I’ve watched a video and was glad to see your content has kept to usual lofty standards 👍
Thanks mate. And welcome back.

Proper workmanship knowing it may never be seen but the crafted it as if it would be on show overground 👌🏼👌🏼
Thankfully it didn't smell like there was any raw sewerage coming into the tunnels.

I think it was a Martin Zero video I watched and commented about the entrance where the Sheaf went underground. I used to regularly visit Sheaf House 8 storey office block to maintain the boilers located in a sub-basement. The river went underground via a trash screen with an automated scraper. One school holiday period kids were playing on the trash screen and someone switched off the scraper in case it injured one of the kids. Problem was he forgot to switch it back on again. Heavy rainfall followed and the screen blocked with trash. The water level rose so the station was flooded along with the boiler house in the sub basement of sheaf house.
Martin Zero was in this video with me too
