- To test the new Garrett Gold Trap pan, we put a couple of buckets of wash through our half-scale 1850s pattern Gold Cradle (rocker box). Some nice little pieces result from prospecting the Old Timer's way. Happy Fossicking! Warren, Colleen and Glen.
Great video Warren. I use a rocker box to find very fine gold in the US Midwest, left behind when the glaciers melted. I built one using a tall plastic tub, with the carpet zig zagging down inside and then a slot cut in the bottom to let the water and sand flow out. Very light, very mobile and works pretty well. Best of luck with your future gold prospecting.
Thanks for your great comment CH 58, your tub rocker sounds like a great bit of kit! Happy Prospecting mate! Warren.
....and you cleared out the nook for new gold to accumulate. (in a few thousands years)
(and just for chuckles, Rookie! First time use box/cradle!)
Did love the vid.
I love the Garrett gold pans, they are fast and hold onto the gold. Thanks for the video Warren and Co.
Thanks for your comment Walter - Happy Fossicking mate! Warren.
Looks like a good time out there i that Creek. Learning somethin every time and enjoying Your videos. Thanks for sharing and Greetings from Ww2HistoryHunter

Great video for beginners 🙏🤙
A great vid as allways warren, Thank's for sharing ☺
Thanks for commenting and all the best - Happy Fossicking. Warren.
, great video thank you Warren and very often these rocker boxes are portrayed sitting in the Stream bed or nearby gaining a lot of interest and comments from viewers the California cradle was invented here to allow the 49ers to work dry Diggins at high elevations in waterless areas of alluvial deposits they would recirculate their water very often
Looks like fun. Freddie Dodge On how to work your pan a little quicker..
On your rocker most of the gold will be in the upper part. when the gold hits that carpet it just stop. not much will go to the bottom
Thanks for your comment Donald - Happy Fossicking mate! Warren.
I need to try this in my back yard river, I live on a straight wide bit of the river, but I can dig from the low pressure areas in front of the large boulders. Thanks for a fun family activity.
Thanks for your great comment Michael - prospecting for fine gold is great fun for the kids in a healthy outdoor environment. The big kids have a lot of fun too! Happy Fossicking mate! Warren.
Great video Warren and what a beautiful spot to spend a day I will have to do some research on the rocker box and build one for myself GL&HH
Thanks for commenting - good luck with the rocker box build & Happy Prospecting! Warren.
I need to make one for a class project and this helped me so thank you!
NICE WORK LOVE THE VIDEO HP AND GL
Fantastic! Have to get the new Garrett pan...
Thanks for commenting and best of luck prospecting! Warren.
Great video as always Warren, haven't seen part 1 yet but will get round to it soon, got a backlog as usual lol
happy fossicking
Paul
Thanks for your comment Paul - I also have a backlog of Paul/Fiona adventures to get through! Happy Fossicking to you both - Warren.
its so good to finally find a real prospector who drives a real 4wd ( land rover )
Nice Video.. It would be fun to do some panning for gold.. maybe some day.. GH
Thanks for commenting Sir Bruce - Happy Fossicking! Warren.
gold will move out and around steep obstacles in the creek. it takes a true force of water to lift gold up and over those big bedrock nodes. you can still find gold but I've had alot more luck working the sides and back end of the nodes.
Nice! Where I am from there is placer gold in the river that runs right through my city. They say people hard on their luck during the depression could pan enough for a loaf of a bread, and a small meal.
Good video.
Hoping to try out goldpanning one day.
Maybe northern Finland will be a good place.
Best regards
Thanks for watching and good luck with your prospecting! Warren.
I remember another video you did a few years ago with a rocker box, I really liked that one too. I have been wanting to build a rocker box myself. Thanks for this episode, May You Always Have A Flash In Your Pan..
P.S. Would like to see some up close pictures or a video of your rocker box up close...
Thanks for your great comment, I have a much old video with better details on the rocker box here ua-cam.com/video/2u5fF0Po_q4/v-deo.html - Happy Prospecting mate! Warren.

Flash In Your Pan .
Mate you need to let the water flow into the pan and out again, I love the rocker had one years ago, thinking of building another one. Thanks for the video.

Looks like fun, but..........
Just did experiment prior to building machine to use on Snake river here in E Idaho.
There are tremendous amounts of super fine gold in the Snake, but few pieces of gold the size of a paper match head. It's ultra fine gold or nothing, and to that end I have just completed experiments to verify a theory I've considered for years.
In most high bankers or dredges the flow of water is kept quite high to flush out Black sands to keep riffles clear/empty to trap gold. But what if you could both keep water flow and angle of grade (Sluice) to absolute minimum to flush only light/blond sands moving through the sluice box?
My experiment was this. I believed there was a ZONE of magnetic effect that would dictate the weight of magnetic objects (Black Sands) subjected to a magnet, before that magnet would get close enough to CAPTURE that object.
That theory was absolutely confirmed in the last few days.
I took a digital letter scale, placed a semi tall block of foam on the scale tall enough to keep magnet away from scale, and then placed a 5/8" washer in a small, clear box on top of foam block and lowered a powerful magnet over the box with washer in it.
At about two inches the scale registered a noticeable drop in weight of washer as it came into the Magnetic Zone of magnet's influence. The lower the magnet over the washer, the less the washer weighed, but magnet did not CAPTURE, or move the washer until quite low over the washer when it became weightless, and magnet finally captured the washer.
In other words, a magnet (Magnetic Sign Material) placed over entire area of sluice will lower Black Sands to almost weightlessness, so that drastically reduced flows of water and grade of sluice enough to clear blond sands will be sufficient to keep riffles clear of all but the heavier minerals such as garnets or other precious or semi precious stones.
This is only a suggestion to check out as it costs little, but there is a companion effect that might further lock in ultra fine values of gold as a by-product of the magnet, as found in this man's work. But...keep the magnet 'ABOVE' the riffles or you will clog up riffles with black sands

I leave the information to your own imagination as to what can be accomplished!
nice spot warren i would love to fish it
good video
Thats a awesome little rocker box Warren your a bit violent on the rocking though.
I love those garret gold trap pans they are way better then the super sluice pans in my opinion
But you will loose gold out of them riffles your side to side panning method is more suited to the gold claw pans. You need to get that water flowing in and out like the waves on the beach mate and tilt your pan back flatter when agitating the materialbringing the gold back to the rear riffle.
HA! Mr.Warren , do you got any video of making your rocker box. I allways thought the rockers box would be the amplifyer ;) That little thing would be ideal for my situation. Thank you for your video. One other thing, do explain to people that when they got a new pen they need first of all session it, to get the manufacturer oil off it and with a jet dry the floating gold will swimm no more. May gold stick on your pan friend.
Thanks for your great comment - good point about 'weathering' a new pan too. I don't actually have a build video for the rocker box, I built that many years ago before I started videoing for UA-cam! All the best and Happy Prospecting! Warren.
Thank you.
its a safety gravel return
Hahaha i know exactly were you are !!! I live 3 km away from here. If your ever up this way again id love to meet up with you to do some detecting . Id love to pick your brain good sir! Great info and vids!
Who needs a gym membership, just be a prospector lol!! Bob
Did you throw out a nugget 8.50minutes in? And great video thanks bud
Love watching these vids from around the world and Australia but the thing that pisses me off is when there is no weight in !! How many grams for the time it took.
Hi Warren. With that type of prospecting, do you need to be licenced. I've been watching on TV the gold prospecting teams in Aus, where they are doing big areas and are needing the licence. Though I will never be doing this type of thing but it is on my "Bucket List" I would like to know.
G'day Kevin, prospecting laws vary from State to State, in Queensland you need a Fossicking Licence, Victoria & WA a Miners Right, NSW you need it for certain state forest. Just check with your State Mining Department for info. Permits are fairly inexpensive and allow you into designated areas, state forests etc. Hope this helps mate, just message me if you need any further info. Cheers. Warren.
Nice vid Warren. Was that fine yellowish coloured material left in the pan at the end, gold or just sand? I've done a bit of panning myself and usually have one or two flakes at the end, just wondering if I may have been tossing gold dust out thinking it was rubbish.
G'day Kingston, yes there was still some find sand and heavy black sands at the end there, the gold flakes and small pieces I just pulled up with the snuffer bottle. You definitely won't mistake gold for sand, although there is a point where the gold is so fine, it requires a great deal of patience to recover! All the best mate and Happy Fossicking! Warren.
Would it work to use a water pump?
Sure would Andrew, water pump would be an easy way to feed the water rather than the Old Timer's technique with a 'dipper'. Happy Fossicking mate! Warren.
How much does it cost that looks like a PVC pipe in your video
How does one get the plans for the sluice box?
👍 Rio, Brasil ...
watch out for the venomous snakes of your country :)
Not very good. Like a Luciebox that lays. in the water. better.
get yourself a paint can on a stick
