  • r/Talesfromtechsupport The guy who calls into tech support in today's video is absolutely nuts. He gets so pissed off that he threatens to drive almost 200 miles to the building where OP works so he can beat up OP. Dude... you called a tech support guy on the phone. How will you even know what he looks like? Are you just going to come up to random people and ask, "Hello, are you the guy who I threatened to beat up?" To be hones, in most companies the IT guy is the person who sets passwords and he knows them.
Also changing password every x days was already proven to be one of the biggest security holes, because it almost always ends up with half of the stuff writing their passwords on a sticker and keeping it on their desk.

Sadly, the US law protects someone from being fired for being stupid. So, you either let them royally screw something up and cost the company a lot of money to be able to fire them for gross incompetence.. wait for them to quit on their own.. or you promote them to a job where they can't do any damage.
Turns out, more often than not.. the company views the small hit to profit by promoting the idiot to be less cost than waiting for the mistake to be able to fire them. And the profit margin doesn't account for the strain on mental faculties the idiot imposes on other employees.
Source: I got to be the unfortunate bastard stuck with egg on his face having to promote a complete retard to middle management because he was originally hired because he is the son of an investor.. and we had no grounds for firing him.

Me: "Yeah... I have no internet connection."
Tech: "Did you try A, B and C?"
Me: "Sir, I literally switched and changed every single piece of equipment from the cables, over the modem over the splitter down to the wall-socket."
Tech: "But could it still be on 'your' side?"
      Me: "Pretty sure it's not."
Tech: "Do you have the correct password?"
Me: "You are aware I have a modem. And yes, after changing it, I checked and double checked. It takes everything and the network monitor tells me, it calls up, sends the data and get canceled without any notification."
They sent a tech over to my house, who mentioned that the telephone line looses a lot of packages. So he replaced the cable from my wall socket to the telephone box outside the house. Have now a fancy new ultra thin cable. But didn't change anything.
It went back and forth resulted in a renewed contract with the ISP, new hardware new password and anything. Which finally solved the problem. They even had the audacity to blame it on my computer running on Linux. (What do they think THEIR godammn network hardware runs on? Glass marbles? Little ants running through tiny tubes delivering the data packages?)
Well a LOT later - turns out after some storm (I was away) there was some hickup down the line. My modem tried to connect to ISP but the signal came on all garbled, with locked my connection after THEIR system detected a hacking attempt. So It would have been literally ONE click on Techs side, to check if the connection was active. Then he would have seen the blinking red warning message, that the connection was blocked due to an 'hacking attempt' -.-
In hindisght. It was quite funny.

Most people think that you can do that through the phone, and they don't get why you tell them no.
I got around that many times by explaining that the technician coming around to fix the issue was not free and that his visit would be X$, and that I only wished to save him that trouble.
Usually, most of them comply when you turn it that way, but there is always the one idiot who will push. To those, I tried maybe 2 other times and then I gave them what they wanted, malicious compliance style.

Ah, the memories! I served many long years in tech support, covering many things - computers, OS, various software products, even an internet on your TV box. Once, I had a man on the line that said the ghost of his dead son was haunting his TV internet device. While at first I was inclined to laugh (I actually didn't) by the end of the call I was almost in tears.
It was clearly a case of user error, but I really had to run in circles to explain that without actually saying it, as his grief was so obvious I couldn't just come right out and tell him he messed up and didn't notice it. Who am I to tell a grieving father, "No, it wasn't the ghost of your son, you just did something wrong."? I ended up gently walking him through the controls, and showed him how to save a draft, should this happen again. In all my years of TS, that one call was the oddest one of all.

so they ease up and most of the time confess they ''might have a bit''
which shocking and i am allowed to say this A LOT before i worked my 2nd company and was in training i had a dude come in.
him: a bit sweaty and nervous. ok sir my uhh.... computer it just blacked out. i was like sure i can fix it.
him: but can u uhh... not check the F drive. i was like uhm why is that sir?
he talked in a lower voice : because some files are a bit. secretive.
me: o uhm yeah sure i can work on this alone if u want we have 1 person per computer mostly.
him: yeah but u can save it all right?
me: sure man and then the next day i checked it out drives where kinda like this
c: main disk 200/500gb used ok not to weird D: movies lots of torrented shit. E: games steam blizzard? F: data. i saw it had some issues. o boy.
seems he downloaded nearly 400gb of porn on there and the disk was really breaking i had to replace it.
now imagine this. 18 year old rookie has to explain his boss he needs a clean HDD to transfer 400gb of porn.

They were always so excited and appreciative and I didn’t care how long it took, I’d stay as long as they needed until they learned enough for the day, and just wait for the call the following week. I got to spend time with and help my grandma, who helped raise me and was the absolute light of my life, as well as with some other wonderful older people who have also since passed on, and I will always remember their happy faces knowing they could contact family and friends whenever they wanted, and their payment in huge hugs and homemade cookies.

So my dad walks in my room and asks me “How do I order shoes online?” I stare at him for a good moment so he hands me his tablet. I pull up amazon and hand it back to him. I watch him scroll through the front page and find a recommended section for shoes (they were mostly flip flops and crocs). “You know you can search specifically what shoes you want right?” And hes looks up at me surprised so I tap on the search bar. He goes downstairs and I go about getting ready for work. Not long after he comes back up and hands me his tablet. “You have an account right? It won’t let me login even though I’ve used my email password like six times.” My dad doesn’t have an amazon account I guess he thought all emails just automatically came with one? Anyways I had to stand there with a dilemma. You see I’m trans and so all of my accounts have my preferred name on them and my dad doesn’t know. So signing in might raise some questions but I’d be damned if I sit there and make him an account. So I sign in and add the shoes to the cart. I quick replace all the shipping stuff over to his name and check him out. He goes in and shows my mom the shoes. And she’s like “what size did you get?” Because she typically is the one to buy his shoes. I’m in the bathroom at this point brushing my teeth and I literally wanted to smash my face through the mirror when I hear “They didn’t ask me that! What size are they?!” He brings me back the tablet and as he’s freaking out I cancelled the order and go about reordering them in his size.

The ASL one was awesome, a while back in college I was taking an ASL course and one night I got into a bit of legal trouble that led to me being stuck in a correctional facility for a few weeks. In there my first day I saw a commotion of guards yelling in this guys face a bunch and shoving him. I later saw some inmates doing the same, when I realized he was deaf. Turns out everyone, including guards thought he was just not right in the head (how this wasn’t sorted out in intake I have no clue) after realizing what was going on, I jumped in and broke it up and began signing to him (with what little I knew) he instantly lit up and looked so relieved. I was then moved to be his cell mate and translated for him as he in return taught me more sign language. It definitely helped turn a dark time in my life into something a little brighter.
