r/Talesfromtechsupport How The Office Karen MELTED 3 Computers

  • r/Talesfromtechsupport In today's episode, OP keeps having encounters with an incredibly stupid Karen in the office. Karen has a space heater, and she keeps pointing the thing DIRECTLY at her computer. She manages to melt 3 separate computers this way, and she also gets annoyed at OP when he shows up to fix it. Is she so stupid that she doesn't realize that she's melting the computers, or is she actually devious because she's doing it on purpose as an excuse to avoid work?

Regarding last story: my dad worked in hospitals fixing medical equipment. Very specialized stuff. We live in Canada and the clients were all over the world. My dad was the best of the best (25 years ago). A hospital in the UK was having a bad issue with one of their machines and flew my dad out to take a look. What was the issue you ask? The plug was loose 😂😂 the hospital flew my dad out so he could plug in a machine 😂😂

Hahaha! Omg. So, not really "tech support" but I worked the graveyard shift at 711. I get off work and get home by 6:30 am. I get a call at 6:35 am(I didn't even have time to get out of my uniform yet), the assistant store manager was panicking becasue the kitchen couldn't get the deep fryer to turn on, which for the morning, was a money maker. The asst. manager asked if I could come back to work to fix the issue. I said, I'm tired and I walked home from work, she offered a ride back to the store and back and mentioned I'd be paid over time to fix the issue. I agree, wth. So I get in to the store, walk to the kitchen and quickly check a few things; the air vents are properly in place, the breaker is turned on. I go "Hmmm...." And I noticed the deep fryer was sticking out more than it usauly was. Turns out, morning shift, pulled out the deep fryer to give a quick mop under the fryer and in the process, partialy unplugged it. I push the big ass power cord(which looks like the ones a home dryer use) all the way into the socket and ta-da! The fryer comes back to life. The whole process took me all of 30 seconds. I walk back to the asst. manger to ask for a ride back home and she was surprsied how fast I fixed it and I said yeah, that's the easiest two hours of OT ever.

The Space heater in the office! It is currently in the 100's almost daily. Yet, one of my co-workers brings her space heater, every day, and cranks that mofo up to FUL BLAST, right under the desk! We share a work space, at the front desk of a medical clinic, and my legs and feet are roasting off, and I get so overheated, that I feel ill sometimes from sitting by it! She had to rearrange her entire PC area for the exact reason the crazy lady in this tale lost her desktops and laptop! My coworker melted a bunch of wires and cords, including the power strip where the monitors are plugged into that we share! She is LUCKY she didn't fry her desktop, and mine. Just like in this story, NOTHING happened to her. They just set up another desktop for her, a small form factor one, all to appease her stupid space heater, which I guess is going to be on full throttle, no matter the season or weather, or how fried, sick, and sweaty the rest of us get from it.
Why is there always that one spoiled, pampered lady in the office, that never gets punishment, can seem to do whatever she wants, come and go as she pleases, wander around and never work, eat at her desk when it is against policy, play on her phone for all to see even though it is against policy, and do it all in front of her manager who goes automatically tone deaf and blind to it? While the rest of us, are chastised and reprimanded the second we crack open an M&M bag, or attempt to take out our phone to even order our lunch?

Had a lady where I use to work. Always cold. Space heaters were not allowed. One morning got a call that her computer was dead. Got there and the breaker on a plug strip was tripped. No space heater though. Day or so later same call same situation. Next day same thing. The next day I caught her with the heater. I ratted on her as those were my instructions. She was chastisted by bosses. Few days later I went straight there before going to office. Found heater there and plugged in. I cut the end of the cord off of it. Turned around and picked up phone called my boss. He came out with her boss. We never saw her again. Ever.

Ah, the petroleum one. I think any of us who are tech savvy in any way have had to deal with the client saying they went through your checklist that you are giving them, only to find that they haven't. Lesson for others, even if the tech support is asking for the most basic, inane things to be checked, do it, cause they know what they are doing and not doing so will cost you.

Got there to find they had jumped it from another boiler to start it, check the fuses all good went to the Breaker panel a found the breaker turned off, they had done some maintenance and forgot to turn it back on. Gave the Supervisor the bill for 7 hours overtime plus 300 miles travel and explanation of problem, as I left I heard him call the electricians to his office. Also had a non starter at a poultry plant, kept blowing fuses. Got on site, checked specs and then checked fuses. Someone in purchasing had found a better deal on fuses so ordered all new stock. When they restocked the fuses nobody read the specs for the new ones and they just matched colors not reading the specs. Needed slow-blow switches for the boilers the ones printed in the same color were fast-blow. Found the correct fuses and got the boiler on line. Took the old and new fuses to show their boss, we had to laugh and the purchaser was fired the next day.

A friend of mine used to work for a large well known international oilfield service firm He was one of two computer techs that worked for the company that was approved to work on their truck mounted mobile systems and he operated out Alberta Canada. One day he received a call about a brand new unit that was down in Indonesia. We didn't have cell phones in those days but we did have the old XJ and YJ radio phones. He called the operator in Indonesia and they spent the next hour or so going through the start up procedure line by line to no avail. When he reported to Houston that he could not figure out was was wrong he was told get on the next plane to Jakarta and someone would be there to meet him. So off he went and yes, there was a driver there with a Jeep. No one had mentioned that the unit was an hours drive into the jungle. Away they went and about an hour later he was at his destination. He went through the procedure and nothing fired up. He the removed a couple of screws and lifted the top off the computer desk. He started by checking the power supply to the main desk switch and there was no power. Now knowing this, he started to trace the wires back to the power supply but he noticed almost immediately they were going in the wrong direction away from the power source to a small switch mounted in the end panel of the desk in a position that was very hard to see. He flipped the switch and then hit the main switch and the desk fired right up and worked just as it was supposed to. He shut the desk down and removed the end panel switch and spliced the wires together as they should be and jumped in the Jeep to leave as soon as the desk was functioning and headed for home. Arriving back in Canada he contacted the other tech who was also the Engineer who had designed the system and told him what he had found. There was a complete silence from Houston. The Engineer then explained that he had installed the switch because when he was doing the install he kept having problems with the power bank on the truck frying fuses during the install so instead of disconnecting the power pack he elected to just add in an isolation switch and simply had forgotten about it when he wrote the startup procedure...........Two weeks later there was a new computer Engineer sitting at his desk and he was never seen or heard from again.

I had a similar situation. I work as an IT support for several mid to large size companies in our region. Some of our customers were 3 hour drive time away. One day we get a call stating that none of their USB devices were working on the PC they use for some part of their work that cannot be linked to the internet so I was not able to remote in to see the issue. So I preceded to do some basic trouble shooting. I asked them when was the last time they rebooted and they said they already tried that. I asked a few more questions but all I got was that they already tried that. I told them if they wanted us to come and fix it they would be paying for 6 hours of window time and 1 hours minimum on site and to be sure they really did all the things I asked. They insisted they did everything.
So I spent the next 3 hours driving listening to music and enjoying the nice weather that day. When I show up they show me to the computer and it was a mess. Probably had never been cleaned in years. In any case I tried to use a few of the USB ports and sure enough they were not work. I rebooted the PC and everything worked fine after that. It was likely a bug that came up because the OS had not been rebooted in forever. Windows can have problems from time to time if its never rebooted. I was only there for 5 min. I told the supervisor the problem was solved and if they had anything else they wanted me to look at because they had at least an hour of my time. They said no and I drove back to work and wrote up the invoice for 7 hours at $120 an hour.
They could of had it for free if they had just listened to me over the phone instead of insisting they did everything already.

That said, a recent story on my side is that I've been trying to get something installed, and it hasn't been working for me. I've tried pretty much everything imo to get it working, including a complete restart of my computer and ordering a drive specially for the purpose of restoring. Then I go to state that after trying it doesn't work, when asked for the steps I did, I carry them out to try and reproduce the error, it worked instantly! At this point, I'm beginning to question how sane I actually am, and how on earth it worked that time but not any of the previous times... 2nd story: Another time while working at the store, it was my day off, and I popped in to get snacks, and pop. As I walk in, I noticed how much of a line up there was at the gas pumps, and a bunch of angry customers. I'm not in uniform or anything, but the regulars notice me and knowing I've been at that hell hole forever ask if I can fix the computers. I'm puzzled. The manager at the time was out of the store to do a bank deposit and left her phone behind, a new hire accidentally hit "ALL STOP" on the G-Site(the computer that controlls the gas pumps) and this was 5 minutes ago. No one on 2nd shfit knew how to turn them back on. Pressing for example PUMP 2 - AUTH didn't turn on the pump and let it dispurse fuel. So I walk behind the counter thinking "You've got to be kidding me, no one knows how to turn all the pumps?" I've done this several times, dropping the scanner on the keyboard and hitting all stop myself. And all you have to do is key in 0#(zero pound) to restart the pumps. I get a round of applause from the customers, and a whole bunch of thank yous from my co-workers. None of them noticed the post it note "key zero pound if the all stop button is pressed)

But... as a result, i quickly learned to fix most simple issues myself.
6 years later (this is on my second [much better] computer), i'm sitting at my desk web surfing when my PC turns itself off. I DONT panic. I check every thing i can think of... The power cord is plugged into the power bar, the other end is firmly inserted into the PC, etc. etc. etc...
    No joy.
Then i see my next door neighbor get out of her car and remember her once telling me that she worked IT at a big local company.
I run outside and catch her before she goes inside. As i explain my problem i notice she's looking VERY tired so i (half-jokingly) offer to make her a large portion of my famous (at least in my neighborhood!) pasta if she'll take a look. She sighs and relunctantly agrees (i later learned that she was just coming off a very tough 12 hour shift).
She comes in and within 15 seconds finds the problem: the power cord WAS plugged into both the PC and power bar... but the power bar itself was unplugged from the wall...
She just held up the plug so i could see it and then plugged it in.
My PC started coming back to life as i stood there open mouthed. She was trying very hard to stop snickering at me when i said:
"How about i double your fee and you dont tell anyone about this."
She responded (when she stopped laughing) with:
    "You wish! Not a chance!"
Still, we had a very pleasant dinner.

Regarding the story about trying to heat up the thermostat to make the AC cut on, I was reminded of a few of my teachers in high school that used similar tactics to have any semblance of control over the temperature in their classroom. I think one of them used to put something on the box on the wall that checked the temperature (I believe it was something cold to trick the heat to cut on, but I don't quite remember). That was my realization that you have no control over how hot or cold it is in a classroom in that building. Over the course of one day, you could go from one boiling classroom to an icebox. It was wild. The thought of teachers having to screw with things to get proper heating and cooling in their classrooms still makes me smile to this day.

While working at a hospital quite a few years ago, I saw a truly scary site in an OR suite. I was performing PM's on patient care equipment in the OR when I saw an extension cord being used during a case (surgery). The extension cord went from the wall to underneath the OR table and disappeared behind the table drape. As soon as the surgery was complete and the patient moved to PACU, I looked under the table to find a consumer-level Oil-Filled Radiator type space heater! They look like the hot water radiators you have in some older apts and homes. In the US, anything used in a hospital has to be either double-insulated or Hospital Grade for the safety of staff and patients....ESPECIALLY in an OR suite!
This was one of the older designs with a mechanical thermoswitch that is known for emitting a little spark when it engaged and disengaged. Not a problem in your home because you don't normally have anything that flammable near them...or at least you shouldn't. But in the OR's at that time, they would often have surgical drapes hanging down from the surgical table and this surgeon had the space heater right up against the drape to warm his legs. This surgeon had circulation problems and they can keep OR's pretty chilly, so this was his idea to keep warm during his surgeries.
The problem is that during surgery, you're flowing pure oxygen into the patient along with anesthetic gases...some of which are very flammable. Oxygen, by itself, isn't flammable (as some would have you believe), but rather is an oxidizer which 'feeds' fire and/or helps flammable materials burn hotter. So here you have pure O2/anesthetic gas flowing into and over a patient, then down onto the surgical drapes along with the surgeon's scrubs. All we'd need is for a piece of O2 saturated drape or gauze pad to end up too near the switch...and instant flameover.
Not to mention an extension cord laying on the floor with the connection exposed to any liquid spills and being a tripping hazard. You really don't want surgical staff tripping during an operation. Of course, we pulled the cord and heater, and both the Head of Facilities and Director of Clinical Engineering spoke to the doctor about the danger he put everyone in. But, being one of our top surgeons, he asked for something to keep his legs warm and Admin told him we would find a way. We ended up getting an FDA variance to modify the radiator heater with sealed solid-state components and a grounded 16' hospital-grade power cord. Somehow, it got fast-tracked and approved in under 4 months (somebody obviously knew someone high up..lol). This was a one-time allowance tho, so we couldn't retrofit heaters for everybody. This was before heated-air blanket warmers were common, which would have been even safer.
The forced-air blanket warmers we have now are the way we keep patients warm, especially during surgery(along with hyper-hypothermia units). A roll-around unit connects via a flexible duct that forces the warmed air to circulate thru the special 'blanket' laying on the patient. But aside from keeping patients warm, I've seen more than a few surgical staff with a second unit hang the ducting so that the heated air is keeping them warm..lol.

The Customer service thing extends to other situations too, like when I was working at an undisclosed 15 minute oil change place, when a customer would have an issue with something and would call in, they would talk to the MOD which a majority of the time, was me. So they would get angry and utter the words “I guess I’ll just have to get my lawyer involved.” Which is definitely the WRONG thing to say to someone who definitely doesn’t get paid enough to deal with that. Because the second you say that you’re getting aa lawyer involved, you no longer deal with me. You deal with the corporate lawyers. So that is my queue to say “Alright, if that’s what you want to do, there is nothing more that I can do for you. Our corporate number is ...” because the second you bring lawsuits into something, I as an employee am protected by my company, so therefore you are suing the company not me. I can’t do anything more from that point, I am to contact my area manager, inform him of the conversation, and he will handle it from there. Usually when I would say that, they would backpedal, and try and apologize. Like if you want something, try being nice to me? That usually gets you much further.

They dont overheat anymore but my current one still gets a tad "warm" from the games and software I use so this karen in the 1st post would not have any better luck.

Those last two... I basically do technical support in a factory. When the operators have a problem with one of the machines I'[m one of the people they call. We tell them with computer problems first restart the software, if that doesn't work restart the computer, if you are still having problems ask for help.
At least 75% of the time when I get called out to help I resolve the problem by... restarting the software or restarting the computer.

"I know the CEO": I own a bunch of TSLA. They have NOT offered me a car. Actually, I don't think it would be a good idea to buy one. My car will probably last 10 more years. I'll see what's happening in 2032, and buy an electric vehicle. probably not a Tesla, since EM seems determined to discredit himself and his companies.I appreciate the fact that he opened the EV industry, but he is a flake.

    As for the plant incident:
We had introduced PC with WinWord (yes, the story is THAAAAT old) as a replacement for upper end IBM Selectric III (with screens etc, very good system). Printing was done on laserprinters shared by two or three typists (all female, mostly 40+) over a Novell Netware 3.x system (running on Compaq Systempro 486 servers, almost as rugged as our SICOM process control systems) and Intel Netport Printserver (very rugged lil boxes).
So when a lady called us complaining she could not print we assumed "printer switched off" or "printer dead" (HP 4L beeeep). Check the obvious and - no. Check the PC config - looks fine, job gets send. Printer self tests. So we check cables (plugged in). I call "home base" to check if the Netport is responding and get "NO!" Now that NP are RUGGED! Really RUGGED! So we look after the netport. That is nowhere to be found. And nobody knows nothing about no Netport. I trace the cabel from the printer, down to the ground, along the ground, under a wooden grating used as a radiator cover. There, under the radiator is our Netport. Dead as a DoDo. Now it is summer and we had an NP "cooking" in another situation (operating at 40+ degree celsius) so heat death is not impossible but still. I check both network and power - they are in. I trace the network cable to the 10B2 wall socket - no extensions (We had a "PhD problem" with 10B2 extensions...). I trace the power line to the power sock....
Actually I trace the power line to a place NEAR the power socket. The one marked NUR FÜR EDV (IT use only). That is occupied by a fat SCHUKO plug leading to a coffee maschine (Fa. Braun Model Eva's Pride to give an idea of the age).
Turned out that our PhD problem was mobile and had "hidden the ugly blinking thing" so the lady could put her coffee maschine there (I once drank the coffee - recommended it for cleaning rotors in large electrical engines). And since the "cable was hanging around" sometime later the Netport was unplugged....
Her (and his and our) boss had a talk with the PhD problem. Our boss is 205cm x Pro Boxer and the PhD was "walking hardhat" size after the (very audible) talk. Never touched IT stuff again.

Regarding the first story, I’m willing to bet that the crazy lady deliberately pointed the space heater at the desktops and laptop so she could claim “IT issues” to avoid working on the project or to leave work early. With the last one where she moved the docking station to the left side AND POINTED THE HEATER BACKWARDS after being told very clearly not to, there’s no way that’s just ignorance. Users are dumbasses, but I refuse to believe that was accidental. Plus the fact that she claimed her old desktop had been shutting down due to overheating numerous times, even though the logs showed that only occurred once.

Something similar to that last one.
I used to work as a security technician for a large school district here in Texas. I was in charge of all the cameras and most of the visitor documentation systems. We had over 2k cameras throughout the district, and a majority of them were on the busses, so for the first few years I was stationed at the transportation building and had more or less constant communications with the mechanics and their foreman. One Friday, well past dark, a coach calls up the foreman telling him that he cannot reach the on-call mechanic and he couldn't start the bus. The foreman and other four mechanics and the assistant director of the department were all at a party, more than a few good drinks in at this point. After calling the wife of the on-call, the foreman learns he dropped a washing machine on his foot and was at the ER having X-rays taken (turns out it fractured a few bones).
So I get a call at 9pm, asking me if I was able to drive a bus three hours away to swap it out while they arranged for a mechanic to get to this EXTREMELY rural area (football game in a county halfway between here and Mexico). I, being both a pushover and wanting the overtime, said yes. (Note at this point I was still licensed to drive a school bus w/or w/o passengers). So I drive the three hours, swap the busses and stare at the shifter. IT WAS IN DRIVE. For those of you who don't know, most vehicles WILL NOT start in any position besides park and neutral. School buses and many other large diesel vehicles dont even HAVE park, instead using the air brake. I 100% know that the foreman walked him through some basic troubleshooting, due to having been on the other side of this more than once. Question 1 "IS IT IN NEUTRAL?" similar to "is it plugged in?". Wasted 8 hours of paid time (6 driving, 1 pre/post trip, 1 transfer of students and me tearing the coach a new one) because he couldn't flip a switch.

Space heater lady: A, sounds like a plan to get out of work. B, what sort of company gives so few fricks about a lady who destroys multiple computers?
Escalation path lady: If someone actually does know the CEO and can call them, they’d probably do that right away instead of harassing random desk workers; I’d call her bluff too.
Manufacturing guy: Rule zero of tech support (with corollaries) is that people forget, people lie, people forget they lie, people are lazy, and most importantly, people will take any chance to assume you’re calling them an idiot/lazy/a liar (even and especially if they deserve it). For example, instead of asking them to check if it’s plugged in securely (“Of course it is, do you think I’m an idiot who wouldn’t check that?”), ask them to unplug and replug it.

  • @michaelbujaki2462

My first technical support call was from a client who got back from vacation and none of her stuff was working. While I opened her account I mentioned "I'll assume that you just got back, plugged everything in and it didn't come back on." The customer said "Oh wait, we unplugged everything when we left. Hey it's working, thank you!" It was the easiest call I would have in tech support ever.
