- VIDEO DESCRIPTION - This painting tutorial will take you through easy to follow, step-by-step instructions on how to draw and paint this sunset waterscape figure image of "CLIFF DIVE" with acrylic paint. You'll learn simple drawing and painting techniques that will help you to create this magical summer landscape image with a tall imposing rock formation, distant hills, a stunning fiery setting sun and a brave person leaping off of the sharp dangerous cliff face. You'll learn to paint this inspirational setting, with its colorful sky, warm rich tones and seductive silhouettes using an easy-to-follow step by step process. The warm glows of the beaming sun onto the person's body, the side of the large rock, the distant land and the water provides a tranquil ambiance to this natural oasis. You'll learn how to create dimension in the shape of the stone, land and figure with a simple layering technique to create contour highlights and shadows that will define the small details. You'll also learn how to create a dramatic sky and a blurry out-of-focus bokeh background using color theory and blending to guide you through a soft gradient of colors. When painting the land, water and reflections, you'll learn to use carefree impressionistic brushstrokes to create texture and dimension, which will add a photo realistic quality to the painting and make it look 3D. Use your imagination and customize this to resemble your favorite person, landscape, or time of the year. You could paint palm trees or pine trees off in the distant land, make high mountain peaks, or a tropical island, perhaps the swimmer could be a female, a child, or a man and woman sitting on the edge of the cliff, instead of jumping off. Canvas: 16x20 stretched primed canvas
Brushes: 1/2 inch flat bristle (large), #6 round synthetic (medium), #1 round synthetic (small)
Acrylic Paint: titanium white, mars black, ultramarine blue, chrome yellow, fluorescent orange
Other: #2 pencil, palette, cup of water for washing brushes, paper towel for drying brushes

STEPS:
1. pencil - Draw outline of landscape
2. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint background of sky and water with black, white, blue, orange and yellow
3. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint base coat of land and cliff with black
4. pencil - Draw outline of cliff diver
5. #1 round brush - Paint cliff diver with black, orange, yellow and white
6. #1 round brush - Paint sun with white, yellow, orange and sky blue (made in step 2)
7. #6 round brush - Paint highlights on cliff and land with orange, yellow, white and black
8. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Finish water with black, sky blue, white, orange and yellow
9. #1 round brush - Paint reflection of cliff highlights with sky blue, orange, yellow, white and black
10. #1 round brush - Sign with black

Do you use thick body acrylic?
Hi Donna, for these tutorials I'm using a thin bodied student grade paint from Blick Materials called Blickrylics. They don't have the best pigment, but I like the consistency for layering and blending affects. I sell small sample sizes of the colors I use on my website (link below) if you want to try them before you invest in the larger bottles.
