Watching this now after all these years and it's a great review! Those off-center victory point tokens do make me want to poke my eyes out though :D

I believe it's pronounced as La GranHa, like Jose is Hosay, jalapeño etc. Very excited for this one, I've pre-ordered it from Stronghold Games.

Thanks for the review! It has been released here a month ago, but I was waiting for the English versions and reviews. After seeing this I think it is a game for me and one that will get some playtime on the table in the group ;)

@4:20"if I upgraded this pig into meat...upgraded, well, not as far as the PIG is concerned" LOL
FYI...went out on a limb and picked up One Night Ultimate Werewolf and Caylus this weekend based on your comments and some of the other videos and reviews I've seen. Already enjoy Power Grid and T&E. Just couldn't get myself to pull the trigger on Defenders of the Realm - that may be more in my brother-in-law's wheelhouse. Anyway, I'm looking forward to those new experiences.
One of these days, it would be interesting to venture (with mild trepidation) into a war game. Not my favorite theme, but the mechanics of most of them are different enough to be intriguing. Have been musing about Memoir 44 and 1775: Rebellion. Hemming and hawing...

THE game I sadly missed at Origins 2015. It would have been nice to get the Frankenstein monster from "Stefuwe Rosenfeld." ;)

So I finally got around to giving this a go, and we like it. It does seem like delivering to the craft buildings is kind of weak. Once you get your engine going, cranking out those wheelbarrows seems like the path to success; in fact, it kinda made me wonder how much legs this game has when there seems to be one optimal route to a win with kind of minimal variance. (In other words, the way you go about cranking out those wheelbarrows might be different based on the cards you start with, but the outcome is the same.) Maybe if the game wasn't so short, you might be able to spare a few actions / resources on those craft building tiles, but other than the income tiles, just doesn't seem worth it. Thoughts? I don't know how much you have gone back and replayed this one since you reviewed it.

This one still comes out pretty regularly with the game group. I do find that you tactically use just about everything in the game. There's a fair bit of randomness, card draw, dice selection, etc... So, I never plan anything too far in advance. I do "OK". I don't think I've won come to think of it, but I'm always only a couple of points behind.... which I obviously attribute to the variance :)

We started drafting the opening hand to mitigate some of the variance.

Ah. Man I can't talk my group into drafting. They won't draft Terraforming Mars either. >

... what? I thought everyone loved drafting. I am genuinely confused right now. 4 random cards = RNG driven, 4 random cards drafted amongst the players = player driven.

Ya I dunno. It's a weird phase or something here.

Yes to "like Bruges", except I enjoy it even more than Bruges :)
Definitely one of my favorites of last year, if not my favorite. Great game.

Brian Frahm Bruges went on the trade/sale pile as soon as I was done recording the review ;)

Drive Thru Review Have you played Bruges with the expansion? I like Bruges more with the City on the Zwin expansion than without it...

Brian Frahm I haven't. I was waiting to try that before getting rid of Bruges, but La Granja nailed that coffin.

Brian Frahm This seems MUCH heavier and longer than Bruges.

Ian Noble Definitely heavier. Maybe a bit longer, but not by a whole lot I expect. Although, we once played Bruges in 45 minutes with 4. I think it was our 4th game of it that night though.

I think last few years eurogames have not been visually so dull looking games anymore. No matter how good La Granja is mechanically, i won't buy it, because it looks like we have gone to time machine and went back 5 years in gaming. The board is ugly. For me it matters.
