I use a Victorinox Paring knife to cut mine. I punch my outline at regular intervals with a little screwdriver to give my self a perforated edge and then cut through with a knife. The back mesh I cut through with scissors. I can cut whatever shape i want this way and it is super quick to do.
Thanks for your very helpful videos! I’m really new to this art form but I’m in love with it! I have a vision of a piece I’d like to create someday but I need more practice. My question is…….Is there any certain guidelines for determining what thickness to use with Wedi board or similar product? Thanks!
Hello Julie! Thank You so much for all of Your videos, You have been a great help even for me - a fellow mosaicist. Wediboards are something new to me and they have been an AMAZING solution for smaller mosaics and mosaics for exhibition as I no longer have to worry about the weight of my mosaics. I saw at the beginning of the video that You have made a house number on a wediboard and it looked directly attached to the house's wall. So here's my question: while I have figured out the hanging system for indoor mosaics to be hanged on the walls with a mini hanger in the back, Im about to have a bigger outdoor project. Could I glue my pre-made mosaic (made on a wediboard) directly to the wall with cement/tile adhesive, or do I even for an outside wall have to come up with a hanging solution? Thank You in advance!! 😍
Hi B Man! Thank you for your kind words and for watching. Great to hear you're getting the answers you need to keep progressing in your mosaic work. Keep creating and I'm glad you're here!🔥
@@JulieWeilbacher I never bothered to check. People I've spoken to have said "weedy," but you're the first I've seen to do the research and notice it's a German company and so pronounce it "veedy." Kudos!
Hi Rose, you might have something called Jackoboard in Ireland. Here we have Wedi. Check your local hardware store. It's great stuff and there's so much you can do with it to build your own substrates.
@@JulieWeilbacher oh thanks, must look when I get out. I remember in UCC there was beautiful mosaic. I forgot to ask you what part of Cork did you visit. Have a great day.
You can make your own if you have to, but it's a complete pain. Some friends of mine tried, but found it was a hassle and not cost-effective. You might look for "marmox;" I believe that's available in Britain.
Hi Julie, I love the way you explain things, I have a question for you, I am about to embark on a mission to create a 4' x 3 mosaic, it will be displayed outdoors, my question is can I use silicon as my glue? I am not familiar with thinset yet, thank you :)'
Hi there! What a fun project you've got planned. You can use silicone, just make sure it's suitable for outdoors. As for thinset am all outdoor mosaics, I've got a playlist you should check out to make sure you're building your mosaic to last through many seasons: ua-cam.com/play/PLDyDBysO6HCashRwrxUv0LBdWT_DSkuh6.html. Keep creating and I'm thankful you're here!🔥
Hi Patti! Wediboard would be a great substrate for a mandala. To cut a circle you might want to look at using a power saw instead of a retractable blade. It'll be much easier to cut that way. Keep creating and I'm glad you're here!
Is there a way to just use styrofoam & lath or mesh tape & mix your own mortar to coat it? This wedi board is over $5 per sq ft, which adds up massively with the plans I have. I would think there must be other options to keep expenses down?? Thanks.
Hi there! Yes, it is expensive, no doubt. I've found it for less at local plumbing supply stores. You've absolutely got the right idea in trying to make your own.
Hi Anna! Great to hear you enjoyed the video. Yes, you can definitely cut a spiral shape but I would definitely use a jigsaw for that. Keep creating and I'm glad you're here!🙌

Hi Julie, Thanks for the video, I was interested to learn of this as a base. Just wanted to ask, if it's to be used outdoors, do the cut edges have to be sealed in some way? Thanks!

Hi Minnie! You can mosaic directly to HardieBacker Board. It's cement board so no need for prep. And yes, use thinset as your adhesive. Keep creating and I'm so glad you're here!🔥
Hello! I just stumbled upon your channel while researching for a project I want to do, and I've already watched most of your videos 😊. I'm new to mosaics, but I thought it could make a good insert for an antique fireplace surround. It would be used in a currently inoperable fireplace that is basically an empty shell. No liner, nothin'. I want to close it off in a 'temporarily permanent' way, because the current plan is to make the fireplace operable in the future. I think this sounds like an excellent substrate to use for this purpose, but I'm not sure what thickness to use. Do you have any recommendations you wouldn't mind sharing? The tiled area would be about 24" x 25". TIA
Hi jenone79! Welcome to the world of mosaic! 😊 Wow, sounds like a fun project! Wedi in a 1/2" - 1" thickness should be fine. I wouldn't go thinner than that. Keep creating and I'm so glad you're here!🔥
