Hey, I like the things you are saying. I illustrated over 100 books for other publishers (some good, many bad) before I had the courage to create and publish my own books and the money is sooo much better. I think the thing you need first and foremost is a marketing plan or know exactly how you are going to sell your book and know what people would buy this book. Without that your going to have a tough road. Great video... I will watch your other ones too.
I got my first book published a short time ago. It sold, but they told me that first time authors have a hard time getting attention from readers. Someone told me that good books don’t sell well sometimes. The same person told me that I was naive. The publishing company sent me a bunch of copies of the book that I wrote. Next time, I won’t work with an expensive publisher.
Hello Derek!! I am happy that I have stumbled across you and your video as I am preparing to move forward with my manuscript!! I have always written and find it brings me much joy! I am excited and appreciate the advice you have given in this video along with how to strategize !!! Thank you and have a great day!!!
Hello Derek, thank you for taking the time to make and publish this video. I found it on my first session researching self-publishing and it gave me great encouragement. It's generous of you to share your knowledge and advice. I've subscribed to your channel and will view your other self-publishing videos. I have an ambition to publish books for nascent readers. Hopefully, I'll be in touch in due course to let you know I've succeeded. Best wishes and thanks again!
Thank you for being straightforward with your advice. I will put it to the test. Wishing you success in your fiction endeavors. I'm an author who is also an artist, but I'm going to redesign my book's cover.
Some excellent advice Derek. I think the key issue is this - Authors think the work is done when a book is made available. its about 50% of the effort. Marketing and techy know-how in how to make it discoverable is the key to success.
What a refreshing and intelligent coaching video! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and savvy advice. I am delighted to research your site to lear more from you.
Hey Derek. I agree with your publisher strategy at 09:00. I'm taking the same course where I make the book work first via self publishing and then wait for an offer from a traditional publisher of the book is successful. I imagine I can strike a better deal with the publisher because there is less risk for them to take on the title.
Thank you so much for this information. I truly appreciate the honesty. I'm doing my homework on which way to go to reach my goal. Thank you for the quality information.
It's easier than you think. All you have to do is submit a copy of your manuscript to the U.S. Copyright office in Washington, D.C. if you live in the United States. Copyright is very easy.
@Jyotindra Bhatt Appreciate Video clip! Forgive me for the intrusion, I would love your opinion. Have you ever tried - Tarbbatigan ebook master Tip (just google it)? It is an awesome one of a kind guide for learning how to create an ebook without the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my friend at last got cool success with it.
Hi . I love your video really well made ! I have a question is registering the book with the WGA good enough to protect it ? I wrote a children's book that the people I have show. And have read it say it's an. " instant classic". Ala Ferdinand by Munro leaf . Which is very special but it's a special story and based on a true story as well . We're doing the pictures which are super important and I know exactly how it needs to look . The copy is finished and I edited it . Nothing else needed there as everyone says who reads it " don't change a thing ! This is good too ! Is it better to self publish a children's book or better to attempt at getting a wider audiance ? And if you do have a good book or if it were an " instant classic " how would it get revised or be eligible for all those little awards they give a good book ? Do we miss out on that when we self publish and if not how to we get it to the reviewers ? Thank you so much
I have enjoyed your videos for sometime now but here is an issue no one has addressed. Can i self publish a large multi-volume book? I have completed volume one of a 4 volume historical biography (volume one alone is about 400 pgs). Its extensively researched and heavy with sources and footnotes as well as several maps and other images. Can such a book or similar ones be self published using modern methods like createspace?
Hi Derrek, A great video, you gave us lots of great tips for beginners. I filled a couple pages of notes up..... You talked about book reviews . 1. What is the process of getting reviews on Amazon. Do you get 10 family members and friends to write reviews.. When how does this process work? Before or after you make an agreement with Amazon? 2. Are there any other important places to put up good book reviews? 3. What is important in Book Reviews to say?
Kudos for the Video clip! Sorry for butting in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you heard the talk about - Tarbbatigan ebook master Tip (just google it)? It is a great one off product for learning how to create an ebook without the headache. Ive heard some great things about it and my mate at last got astronomical results with it.
You don't have to, I agree it might be a waste of time and money. I use it because I can build long term, organic traffic that attracts my readers so I don't need to do any marketing.
I think your question should be, how do I register my copyright? In the US, your book, artwork, photography, etc. is copyrighted as soon as you produce it. However, for more protection, and as proof against theft, you may register your work with the US copyright office. Here's the link for registering with the US copyright office: www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-register.html
If go to one like Tate Publishing, it is best to have a copyright lawyer look at any contract they offer you. Also, check out Better Business ratings on-line. I did this for a company several years ago and found out they were a scam. I never followed up after their initial reply contact to me. God bless.
Most indie authors have no clue about the actual process. They go into it thinking all they have to do is write something and put it up in Amazon and they become a superstar author. When you self-publish, you are running a business. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Industry is crashing right now. Maybe this will start to weed out the crap on Amazon. If you think don't need a professional editor, you're wrong. Budget for your book properly and take it seriously.
Self publishing is not it is all cracked up to be. Unless you are a good businessman and expert marketer you will virtually sell no books. These success stories you hear about are not the norm. My book made 5 dollars in 6 months, even after marketing it. I gave up and found a part time job to actually make money.
It just doesn't make sense. Of the thousands of new novelists who self publish, the vast majority wouldn't make enough to cover the costs you lay out. Why would anyone risk thousands of dollars in a market so saturated that even with such an investment the odds are stacked to high heaven against success? On the other hand, if you're an established author with a solid base, these kinds of investment make perfect sense. Personally, I think the vast majority would be better served by embracing a more "Hands on" approach until they break through on some level. Every story an author writes is a new beginning, and the learning process is much cheaper if the writer takes the initiative immediately. Just my two cents.
Totally agree. Start cheap and don't overspend until you've proven the market. That said, you can make lots of money if you know what you're doing - I built an audience from scratch and am earning a living now, but I knew how to avoid all the mistakes.
Why would anybody want to self publish? If you can write you can get a literary agent and a real publisher. Self publishing is for people who can´t write.
Gary...for the most part, good writers can make much more money as independent writers than as traditionally published writers. But, you have to do your own marketing. I happen to work with an indie writer...who is very successful. Every eBook book that she writers sells around 8,000 copies...from which she earns around 3 dollars per copy, and she writes 3-4 books a year. This is now. It wasn't that way in the beginning. Fact is, excepting the top 2 or 3 percent of the best traditionally published writers, most everyone else has to have a day job. And, lots of people can write...and write as well, if not better than the best selling authors, but that doesn't mean traditional publishers are going to give them a chance.
Just wonderful, I been tryin to find out about "ebook publisher free" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Quonor Publish Peneplanation - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my colleague got excellent success with it.
I'm a little lost here....maybe a little slow... are you saying self publish meaning get my book together covering & all ready to sell...& I can sell it on my website or Amazon but you're saying that it's best not to let Amazon do it ..meaning publish my book it's best that I get it all together ready to sell and then get a little site on Amazon to sell my book???

Many good points !
Question: How Do I get my book-manuscript "copyrighted" ?
I have the same question about copyright.. without copyright, is it safe to upload ebook on Kindle, etc..? or what?
It's easier than you think. All you have to do is submit a copy of your manuscript to the U.S. Copyright office in Washington, D.C. if you live in the United States. Copyright is very easy.
They charge a small fee but it's worth it when you get your copyright certificate.

You sound realistic, thank you. I am writing a horror book and as soon as it's done in going to get it published and build up my UA-cam channel.
Thank you.
Thank you!!!

Nice to get some good legit advice. Most people doing these kind of videos on UA-cam; are doing it purely for the views.

Can I publish no only my own books but a book from a different author?
alicia Ruiz that's plagiarism.
you can start a publishing company and represent other authors.
Don't take his stuff as gospel. Some of it is good, but other parts are plain wrong.
You're probably right - it would be great if you could share which parts I've got wrong though to help others.

Avoid getting ripped off
Isn't the title and tag line even more important to attract the right readers?
Get your own website and do the hard work and keep 400% of your money. This guy and others is advertising for Amazon.
Gosh, why don't you talk so one can hear the difference between 17 and 70, the only part you let out of your lips is 7 and a blur/
