It will be the starter motor I even took the original one off a jumped it and it fired up lovely but when I put it back in the car didn't want to put a new one on fires up straight away
ive had a similar issue with a swap in a e36 328i and i just added an extra ground on the other side of the motor to the chassis and it cranked right up. my dash dimmed the same way when i cranked it over

Yeah sorted it now!
