Always thought Mary Wilson's career potential was not fully realized. So happy to hear her story and how she got took control of her career and her financial situation.
Lol. That reminds me of playing Iceberg Slim audio, and the narrator putting me to sleep. Took about 3 nights to finish it. I'm trying to finish Mary's in one sitting. Her voice is beautiful.

He definitely was a grifter. Freda Payne spoke in her book that came out last fall about how she had met him before Mary did and he had pushed up on her first - I think he was looking for an American woman he could woo and live off of, and Freda didn't fall for the bullshit. But sadly, Mary did.
Mary Wilson did what I hope she set out to do which was to make sure The Supremes weren't pushed into the very distant background and forgotten all to gether like some groups, or singers who helped make Motown. You did that in your life time Mary. Rest In Peace.
Love me some beautiful Mary Wilson, and with all due respect; still, with *FIVE* Billboard 100 number ones *in the row,* during Beatlemania, no less, I doubt that the Supremes were *ever* in danger of being totally forgotten.
@@nycsongman9758 Well ask the average 16 - 18 year old who a Supreme is. They were popular the year I was born, I'm almost 60. Hell, ask most of them who a Beetle is. My daughter's are in their 30's, they barely remember who a Supreme or Diana Ross is. Everyone's not a music history buff.
The way I see it she did a fine job. She had a certain elegance about herself that seemed like she should have been lead, over Diana. But she was the one who held them together, almost like their big sister, esp. to Florence, and that showed me a lot, about her heart. So she served her purpose, and did a fine job.
I want to make sure you get this !!! You were always the LADY of the SUPREMES ! I want you to remember that for the rest of your life . You are & were the LADY ! I look back now and see how much you helped me to be and develop into a nice lady . Thank you . Peggy
My first thought was, 'whaaat? How she gonna read this whole book in 3 hours and 6 minutes??' Soon, my suspicions were confirmed - there is a lot left out from the hard copy. However, if hearing "Supreme Faith" grabbed your attention, I suggest you read the whole book. I don't want to detail the drama here because it is either too controversial or I understand it is too painful to hear Miss Wilson tell us such atrocities with her voice. My heart broke a little hearing some parts of this book, told from Mary's voice. There are some parts of this audiobook where you hear Mary almost cry a bit while she reads along. Yet, the most pertinent (and candid) details are included here., and hearing it read by Mary makes it so much more poignant. The audiobook is like a condensed three hour movie narrated by Mary Wilson, and feels like Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It" but even more dramatic.
Thank you for enlightening us that this is not the completed book, because I thought it was. Yeah, it do seem that Mary had tender feelings that pulling up bad memories would hurt her. This just hurts me to even know she went through crappy stuff I know she didn't deserve. But she lived through it, to tell.
As I read the print version I first thought it would be pointless to listen to the audio. But after just a few seconds, i know that I will return to it. Mary's range as a singer was always rather limited, but still, next to June Christy, she is my favourite female singer. Just because of the warm, haunting tone of her voice. Same goes for her speaking voice. It is so soothing.... boys, you better not get too close to her, stay in the safety zone - this lady was a true siren! Love her always!
Diana thought Florence was her rival! She thought you were her rival! She thought Berry was her rival! Diana probably thought the creator of this world was her rival! ...🤣
David Lasher And no doubt about it if Tammi Terrell had lived she would had been Diana's rival. Tammi would had shamed and sung Diana Ross under the table February 26,2021

I'm so very happy to hear it from one of the members mouth that there was NO rivalry or discord in the group after Dianas leaving in the early 70s. At least in the beginning, that is. However, with Barry at the helm... you just knew that it would inevitably rear its ugly head to destroy the group finally. ( ALLEGEDLY ). R.I.P. Miss Wilson. A honored and much deserved rest indeed! Unto all... blessings and the powerful PEACE of the most high FATHER be with you and yours.
Yes it appears Barry, and possibly Diane wanted the Supremes to disappear, and to only show up when called. Mary wouldn't allow it, she was always a reminder of where they came from. I brought her first book, I have to get the last one as well.

What an awesome book. What an awesome Woman. So much class and strength. You inspired me to finish my book. Thank you fellow pisces✊ Dreams do come true.🌷
LOVE Mary's voice..she's also very sincere..beautiful soul..but all this was the past..Diana and Mary are no longer "enemies" as the media has always portrayed. In fact, Diana said long ago that she forgave Mary. I don't know why she felt Mary needed to be forgiven. She only wrote the truth and sometimes the truth stinks! I love all 3 Supreme ladies: Mary Flo Diana.
@Alain Quartermaine rubbish!! you talk out your arse. they are soul sisters. you can love someone but not necessarily like them. that's diana and mary. they share a beautiful history and nothing you say can alter that. as for snakes..diana ross was the snake in motown..she worked her way into gordys bed and then dismissed mary and flo. now get your facts right and FUCK off.
@Spanky Applegate you've got it all wrong - it was precisely Berry & Diana's relationship which caused tension in the group. Diana started to call Berry up on the phone when things weren't "going her way"..Diana told Berry things not just about her own group but also she told the tale on other female Motown acts who she felt were trying to upstage her. Mary has done absolutely nothing wrong and she has stated time and time and time again in interviews that it did not bother her Diana taking the lead BUT when they started being excluded from interviews and when Diana had her own dressing room that's when the tension started. GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT before making stupid remarks about The Supremes. Diana was a pain in the backside. She drove all the other female acts mad. She would wind up everyone INCLUDING Flo. And to say Flo was meant to be her friend, that was pretty naff of Diana to do that.
@Spanky Applegate you are so wrong it's funny. i dare say you're a ms ross worshipper (in her camp) who sees her as nothing but perfect. well you're a stupid naive fool. for a start your perfect idol is false. the woman she pretends to be on stage is not the woman off stage. give me mary over diana ross anyday. Flo and Mary did NOT get everything Diana got. Maybe in the very beginning when there was equality within the group, but from 1965 onwards Diana Ross started to take over the show (with the help from Berry) and this is where the fury and disharmony stemmed from. You can say what you want, but the Supremes tragic legacy is very simply all down to Diana Ross acting the Diva and Berry Gordy becoming obsessed with her. He pushed and pushed Diana when he realised her voice was getting him countless No.1 Hits. Meanwhile two other innocent singers got trampled on and they got tossed aside in the end by both Diana and Berry who were out for domination. END OF DEBATE. Anything else you say to me is irrelevant. Go masturbate over Ms Ross.
Wow! This was an Amazing Story! Although I am a Diana Ross Fan, I was so Impacted and inspired by Mary Wilson's story. I feel I have gotten to know her More through her story. "BLACK FIRST" I'm just saying thank you for this evening powerful broadcast. For me only I think that this is a classic book reading thank you. Black First
It’s imperative to remember just how young the Supremes were & the challenging times in history that they were influencing & living through, when reading their books 📚 For example, they were all 20 years of age, on June 17, 1964, when “Where Did I Love Go” was released and went on to become their first #1 song out of 12. - Florence Ballard [June 30, 1943-Feb 22, 1976] (32) - Mary Wilson [Mar 6, 1944-Feb 8, 2021] (76) - Diana Ross [Mar 26, 1944-Living] (76) The Supremes had shared their formative years together, during segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, the JFK, Lyndon B. Johnson & the Richard Nixon presidencies, the war in Vietnam, etc Representing the African African experience in the music of Motown with class and sophistication, all while achieving & adjusting to their international fame & fortune across racial lines.
@The King's Queen Mrs. King I have met Diana. Her sister Rita's exboyfriend use to hang out with us. I did not know Florence, but one of her daughters use to call me.
A powerful story. I would have never guessed all of those things happened to her. But the wickedness of Berry Gordy and Motown. I have no doubt of that.
I remember reading my mom's copy of this when it came out in the early 90s; I must have been about 13. It baffled me that she basically let an unemployed man from another country take over her entire life. In my 40s I understand it even less. Nonetheless, I admire that she pushed past the bad times. I saw her live years ago and her show really was wonderful. I am sad that she isn't alive to see all the fanfare around her music being released. But I am sure she's watching from afar.
I have read Mary's second book many times, and in fact, I refer to it often even now. It is an exceptional book for all that it teaches about handling the after-effects of super fame and success. She also gave a very clear view into the experience of managing The Supremes in the years that led to her solo debut. But I totally agree with you about Pedro. That she turned down a marriage proposal from Flip Wilson and later went on to marry someone like Pedro was absolutely astonishing. He was of no help to her financially and was abusive even before their marriage. I chalk it up to karma. Their marriage was destined to be, and though she wasn't happy, at least she was blessed with her children.
To be loved and chosen, that’s why she did it. She was alone and insecure at that time. He showed up just at the “right time.” She could not break away because she was wooed in the beginning, and too emotionally tied later. He dominated his way into a relationship with her. People like Pedro cannot be underestimated, they are good at manipulating.
About that man Pedro situation, I have seen it several times, in women I grew up around, who were strong, smart, and beautiful, and could have had their pick of any man, but fall in love with the worst one, and their life turn for the worse. I guess they call that blind love. But once I see their heart is set on love for that person, I leave it alone, because I don't cross the line of interfering with love. I just let them live their life. Sometimes they can work out, sometimes not. But it just use to surprise me how as a child I looked at that strong woman, as having it all, and now being treated like less. The same thing happens to some men too, blind love. But it is what it is.
But her success overshadows the bad times. Berry really did some dirt to Diana too. Had it not been for RCA, Diana would have been broke in a split second after leaving. He did it to Flo and Mary Wells. The big man, Berry, didn't do them right, either.
Mary Wilson went through a lot with the Supreme Singing Group, Diana and Berry, and lastly her marriage to that damn Pedro...The music industry is so ruthless...it's not nice at all....you have to become a snake and sell your soul to the devil to get a head...it's not worth it....not at all...Rip Mary Wilson, you're now a star for god and can sing along with the heavenly choir...
FACTS!👍FACTS!👍This is so 💔ing to hear from Mary Wilson. To me she was overwhelmed by way too many battles. An abusive marriage,a dirty, backstabbing, scheming, music industry, friendship betrayal. This beautiful woman had to be emotionally drained, the issues with Diane Ross added more to that..[Not too mention two C-Sections..ohh! mercy] Now finally after all that, she survived.WOW! what a life, who knew just being and wanting to be singer,a Supreme at that, Mary had to endure so much pain, sadness, unhappiness, dissapointment, fustration, disrespect.I almost cried..it's just too much.Mary You Are Missed So Very Much.I will from now on call her "Motown's Queen" RIP🙏✌💔😭
@@lorebay2593 Most celebrities like that never become interested in God or surrendering their life to Jesus Christ. And those that do don't testify about having come to know the Lord as their Saviour. But Jesus instructs those who believe in Him to testify about it. There are many scriptures where He tells His followers to own up to knowing Him, that He will own us when we're standing before God. We need the Lord to speak on our behalf when we leave this world. He is our afterlife attorney, so to speak. If you have not accepted Him as your very own personal Saviour before you leave this world, you will not go to Heaven...period. You will spend eternity in Hell, no matter who you are, or how rich and famous you were on this Earth. It's a tragic ending to a life where one managed to have everything they wanted here, only to end up in Hell!
Mary clearly explains why she stayed with him. She was insecure and she thought it was her fault when he would get angry. Some people grow up getting hit or being abused in some form and to them, that’s all they know. It’s a struggle for them.
Mary and Flo are the real supremes. The very first pieces to come together. Wish Mary wouldve ditched the supremes thing and done a duo project with Flo.
I've been in her shoes with the abusive husband situation. Her story brought back so many unhappy memories. Even the guns and being awaked out of your sleep with the acquisations. I understand EXACTLY why this QUEEN stayed. Mine ended up actually shooting me. So I get it. I admire her ability to get up and keep pressing on. She met the trials of her life with Grace and dignity. R I P. QUEEN. You reign supreme forevermore. I SALUTE your life and the gift you gave us!
🌬️💨💨💨 What MOST ABUSED PEOPLE DON'T KNOW is that the "abuser" actually needs the "ABUSED" more than the ABUSED realizes. The abuser is extremely insecure and NEEDS someone to abuse which is why they "TARGET" certain types of women. The abuser usually has a "radar" detector for weakness and can usually "smell" a woman they can take advantage of a mile away...notice how ALL abused women have the same characteristics and they all fall for the charm for the abuser. These types of men are VERY insecure, but they are MASTERS at charm, manipulation, and they know how to reel a woman in.
Damn, her story sounds worse than the Tina Turner one. That fool Pedro was CRAZY. But I saw that coming when he just showed up out of the blue with all of his luggage. Funny how many parallels she had with Flo; in that they both got screwed by Motown and married abusive dudes who gave them bad career advice. SMH...

@@phillycheez6288 "... she was constantly suing them for royalties off early hits." Not true; after her money (the separation-agreement cash that she'd received from Motown, in '68, and after ABC records dropped her in '70) ran out, she sued Motown *once,* for alleged financial impropriety, in which she lost, in 1971. "... and whatever group was hot at the moment and making the money it carried the whole company." I don't know what you mean by that. "They're contracts @17 years old only gave them 3% combined which is 1% for each." Yes; acts that are fresh off of the streets, with no demonstrated track-record of revenue-generating hits, get the lowest-of-the-low royalty rate; at that, earliest point in their career, the record label is assuming almost 100% of the enormous financial risk necessary to launch a brand-new act, with absolutely no assurance that the label would even *recover* its initial outlay, much less *make* any money off of the act. And what does their *age* have to do with this ? The contract was a legal business agreement, and as such, it was up to the girls' parents/ guardians to ovesee/ safeguard the girls' financial well-being. It's important to remember that in 1961, Berry Gordy was a struggling, small business owner; Motown was *far* from becoming *MOTOWN,* the game-changing institution; and *no one* had any idea that these three giggly schoolgirls (the "No-Hit Supremes", they were called) were going to blow up into pop culture icons. Mary, Mary, my dearest Mary - in 1964, when the Supremes first went 'nuclear, was the year I turned 11 yrs old . My two younger sisters ( ages 9 and 5 ) first began emulating the group, practicing both your songs and dance routines . From the very first, I knew even as a child, that there was something I just detested about that broomstick with the rag mop head who never missed an opportunity to " buck out them eyes" . Every pre-teen I knew thought that somebody must have told her she was cute and she bought it ! As the years went by, we grew to love both you and the original 'Flo-Jo", while our hatred of the broomstick escalated ever higher . This was especially true she swooped her narrow ass into the church for Flo's funeral, putting on that 'show of loss and concern . I hope that you are not offended by this, but the pity I felt for both you and Flo, was o overwhelming; I felt that you both had been treated reprehensible and that the broomstick with eyes seemed to be the cause of it all . I truly think if I could have got down the aisle where that bitch was squeezing the life out of Flo's twins I would have tried to pop them damned eyes out of her head ! Know this, Mary my dear: here at home you will always be both valued and revered and most importantly, you will always be loved !
At 3:05:20 When Mary says "YES, DREAMS DO COME TRUE" she forgot to say...BUT YOU GOTTA WORK SUPER HARD AND MAKE UNBELIEVABLE SACRIFICES, I guess the tape ran out?

Excellent autobiography. @ 2:20 Mary was a source of empowerment and liberation from domestic abuse. Motown, ie Berry Gordy abused her too. IJS. May her spirit live and her soul RIP.
Such an interesting story, sad too. It just shows what you need to be aware of when you join a group and a label like Motown when your young and uninformed about the business side of the industry. Reality check but, who does that when your young & inexperienced. As much as I luv Diane, when she was part of the Supremes they were the catalyst kick start to her illustrious career. There are countless other Artists that have been treated this way but, I think today's Rappers for example have got a much better hold on the business side of the industry before signing away their rights. RIP Flo and Mary you women really were Supreme Stars no doubt about it 🤩🤩
I think many have learned from the mistakes of people in the past. Elvis was screwed over by his manager. I think it was Eddie Van Halen talking about when they first started they had gold records and they didn't have any money. All the money they made didn't come to them and there was that fat guy that managed Backstreet Boys and that other boy band. They were able to sue to get their money. They were not getting anything either. Yep, its a business

Diana probably thought the creator of this world was her rival! ...🤣

@@Dion_Mustard so true.
I have always Respected Mary Wilson, but after hearing this she is a real real Soul Survivor who I respect even more

It’s imperative to remember just how young the Supremes were & the challenging times in history that they were influencing & living through, when reading their books 📚
For example, they were all 20 years of age, on June 17, 1964, when “Where Did I Love Go” was released and went on to become their first #1 song out of 12.
- Florence Ballard [June 30, 1943-Feb 22, 1976] (32)
- Mary Wilson [Mar 6, 1944-Feb 8, 2021] (76)
- Diana Ross [Mar 26, 1944-Living] (76)
The Supremes had shared their formative years together, during segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, the JFK, Lyndon B. Johnson & the Richard Nixon presidencies, the war in Vietnam, etc Representing the African African experience in the music of Motown with class and sophistication, all while achieving & adjusting to their international fame & fortune across racial lines.
EXACTLY👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you very much, for those detailed facts.
I found it kind of chilling that Florence died in '76, Mary died at 76, and Diana is 76.
I love her voice

I was 15 years old. Sometime in1964 I saw the album cover " Meet The Supremes " I love you Mary.
That’s why she’s gone, she planning to get back out there, it was time for her rest. I hope your Supreme faith was in the LORD, sleep on queen.

"... she was constantly suing them for royalties off early hits."
Not true; after her money (the separation-agreement cash that she'd received from Motown, in '68, and after ABC records dropped her in '70) ran out, she sued Motown *once,* for alleged financial impropriety, in which she lost, in 1971.
"... and whatever group was hot at the moment and making the money it carried the whole company."
I don't know what you mean by that.
"They're contracts @17 years old only gave them 3% combined which is 1% for each."
Yes; acts that are fresh off of the streets, with no demonstrated track-record of revenue-generating hits, get the lowest-of-the-low royalty rate; at that, earliest point in their career, the record label is assuming almost 100% of the enormous financial risk necessary to launch a brand-new act, with absolutely no assurance that the label would even *recover* its initial outlay, much less *make* any money off of the act.
No one. In those long three years before they really hit, *who* do you think was footing *all* of the bills ?

I hope that you are not offended by this, but the pity I felt for both you and Flo, was o overwhelming; I felt that you both had been treated
reprehensible and that the broomstick with eyes seemed to be the cause of it all . I truly think if I could have got down the aisle where that bitch was squeezing the life out of Flo's twins I would have tried to pop them damned eyes out of her head !
Know this, Mary my dear: here at home you will always be both valued and revered and most importantly, you will always be loved !

Such an interesting story, sad too. It just shows what you need to be aware of when you
join a group and a label like Motown when your young and uninformed about the business
side of the industry. Reality check but, who does that when your young & inexperienced.
As much as I luv Diane, when she was part of the Supremes they were the catalyst kick start
to her illustrious career. There are countless other Artists that have been treated this way
but, I think today's Rappers for example have got a much better hold on the business side
of the industry before signing away their rights.
