This is a great autobiography. Berry Gordy is a genius..Who else in the history of music has developed and discovered so many artist who would go on to be legends.

Having grown up in LA in the 60s 70s and 80s, there is no question about Motown’s contribution to the Black community, Black culture, and the world! Now, as I take a retrospective look at the inspiration behind the institution, I see The true Berry Gordy: His Genius, his guts, His grace and his greed.
I slightly disagree with you about color.
The only color that concerned Berry WAS GREEN!!!!

I loved just how he explained his relationship with Diana Ross a pure gentleman is to be admired and much respected. A private matter in your life is simply that. He's a man of few words. Alot of money was withheld from his artists even though they were taken out of poverty, they actually were robbed of their future earnings to last in their retirement years. Berry Gordy looked out for himself, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder got the best protection of future earnings, and the rest of Motown had broken wings. No one is exempt from their wrong doing. There's a price to pay for treating other's unfairly. Not saying he's a bad guy, but everyone is to be treated fairly.

Really tired of the *mega-* uninformed, overemotional, Berry Gordy/ Diana Ross hater-types.
All of the Supremes were rough, untrained, and just-off-of-the-street: *No* track record *at all;* so *of course,* they would've been signed to the lowest, rookie, royalty rate.
The label (Motown) was taking the lion's share of the initial financial risk. This is *standard* in the industry. Also standard to the industry was a one-year contract *with SIX one-year options,* to be exercised at the discretion *of the label;* and the label can drop you, *at any time.*
Standard.
"The girls", as they were known around Motown, signed with Motown in 1961; so, Flo was still under contract, when she was let go by the label in '67.
Is it Berry's fault that he came from a strong, close-knit, ambitious, and enteprenuerial family, and perhaps Flo didn't ? Mary alleges that the Gordy sisters told the young Supremes that they didn't need an attorney to review the Motown contract; perhaps, yet, again, is it Motown's fault that these young people didn't have a strong enough support system to advise them about this employment opportunity that they were about to undertake ?
I didn't know Flo personally, of course, yet, from what I hear, and read, she was one of those "keepin' it real" sorts, that seemed to have the most trouble making the transition from the 'hood to the upper strata of the entertainment business.
As I said, the Gordy family was staunchly middle-class, business owners, with high aspirations that fueled Berry's successful vision of reaching the absolute pinnacle of his chosen field. I sincerely think that Motown got tired of Flo's not being able to decide if she in fact, wanted, or was able, to continue moving in the rarefied circles of performing for presidents, and queens, or if she was more comfortable being the sassy, mercurial, "around the way girl".
The fact that Berry still alive in 2024 is incredible he’s a walking living breathing Library.. Crazy to think he was born the same year as Dr King reminds you the harsh Jim Crow era wasn’t really that long ago

I wish Flo Ballard would have been treated better, Flo should have been able to sing "Ain't That Good News" on the Sam Cooke medley, and a b side, fabulous song, then Flos two Christmas songs left off the Christmas album, then you wonder why Flo started acting out, Gordy killed the harmony in the group.
I read this book years ago when it first came out, but him telling the story himself made it even better!

I read the book years ago but this audio makes his story even better.
This is right on time! In light of the 60th Anniversary of the Temptations as well as The Supremes, I've been fascinated by all things Motown. Thank you for this upload.
I like that he fell back and just became transparent. This music is legendary. It's going to be long around after we are all gone. I mean it's like Bach and Beethoven Motown is timeless. Berry Gordy details his intuition and instinct didn't always fail him. He really believed in his vision and grew as he moved forward. People who wants to go in the business should listen to this. He clarifies that you have to put in the work . He even elaborated about the different correlations he developed. Like how he and Diana Ross was moving. That for me demonstrated his human side,of course it was beneficial for Ms. Ross's career. That's besides the point. He targeted in one person and proved it can work..ok the relationship was denounced later for business reasons but at least he shared what he wanted to now. What's clear is that he knew that everyone didn't like his curt decisions,but he understood that. Point is in the end like what Marvin Gaye said in his book. Berry made each and everyone of them a household name. For that he was thankful.

Soooo good. I've lost count how many times I have listened to it. So many take aways as a creative myself, as a die hard Motown fan, and as a a person with high goals and low money. It's so beautiful. And then I saw Motown the musical, and it meant that much more to see this biography come to life. He matched the musict to this book, so well.

I have read this book twice and listened to the audio version 3 times. I get a joy of "seeing" and hearing this man's words more each time.
Berry Gordy is one of the, if not THEE greatest business men that this world has ever seen. Black, white, red or yellow. He took absolutely nothing and did something that created EVERYTHING! He created THE MEASURING STICK in his respective field. Just like Henry Ford. However unlike Ford he did it against great odds.
There are very few men I hold in admiration. My father is at the top of that list, Berry Gordy is 2nd or 3rd. The list is only 5...
I've been fascinated by his life since I was about 10 years old.
This is a helluva man.
Although I married into a "Motown family", I have never met him.
I saw him at "Motown the Musical", but didn't get a chance to meet him.
Hopefully one day I'll shake the hand of this genius.

To hear about one of the power encounters he had with Marvin Gaye was intriguing. Marvin did mention in a Documentary about his life, that him and Berry had some power encounters.

Berry Gordy had a really great entrepreneur and so innovative, I really admire that. I can't believe that he wrote "To Be Loved", wow!!, one of my favorite songs (and singer) ever! Totally agree with Berry that Jackie Wilson never sang a "bad note".

Did gordy mention he didn't have the decency to tell The Funk Brothers, the musicians that made all the hits and made him his millions, that he was moving Motown to LA? The musicians who made Motown what it was, showed up for work to find a note on the door saying Motown had moved to LA. Legendary bass player, James Jamerson, died broke and broken at the age of 47. Gordy used people then disposed of them. No integrity or loyalty, except to the almighty dollar. Stomach turning.
We had went to see the premiere for #StandingintheShadowsofMotown... the #FunkBrothers, others... a real tear-jerker.
'Some in the audience decried that there was extorting entities back then, that maybe *he* didn't have the extra $$$ to pay his artist fairly. idk...wasn't born back then... however, many in the audience, wondered why he couldn't fiscally help them decades later? And technically, 'it' wouldn't exactly be 'help', it'll be monies they've rightfully earned, *it'll* be #Atonement.
It was concluded that either *he* didn't have a conscience, like most pale exec's are said to have none of...or the power pales behind-the-scenes forbade *him* to help, I mean, rightfully pay those talented musicians...? I know, all speculation. But *what's* not? What *they* said in that documentary/film... *They* were there! *They* did the work! #TheMotownSound
...like, can they at the very least, be afforded some quality dental and healthcare?

That’s very unfair to assume he is wrong because musicians who were not under contract but were work for hire weren’t sent to California when the company moved. It was not even an industry standard back then.

Only A handful of artists Motown wrote and produced their own music Stevie Wonder is not struggling, Smokey Robinson is not struggling, Marvin Gaye was not struggling until he stopped paying his taxes, The Jacksons did not have any issues with money, their issue was having created control, Otis Williams is not struggling, Lionel Richie is not struggling, Holland Dozier Holland never struggled, Mickey Stevens never struggled, Norman Whitfield never struggled, and these are all the people who created music at Motown. None of them never spoke out against Berry Gordy having the wherewithal to sell his company when it was facing a decline. That’s a part of business

Diana Ross as a young performer set out to do whatever it took to establish herself as a Superstar.
She got on her back with the snap of Barry Gordy's fingers and even bore his child.
No telling who else Diana had sex with in the sake of art and advancement.
Probably Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye.
A long list of liaisons throughout her career to include Gene Simmons, and Tom Jones .
I could keep naming names but I'd rather avoid getting carpal tunnel syndrome.
