  • ‘School of Thought’ is the IEA discussion series based on ‘101 Great Liberal Thinkers’ by Dr Eamonn Butler.
Each week, Syed will discuss classical liberalism’s role in bringing the modern world into existence, profiling the lives and ideas of some of the leading thinkers on individual liberty and examining their relevance today.
In this week’s episode, Syed sits down with Madeline Grant to discuss Frédéric Bastiat. Madeline is Assistant Comment Editor at The Telegraph and a Sunday Telegraph columnist.

Bastiat went to botanist school with a man named Lars Levi Lesteastadius. I am a Lutheran Christian. We read writings from Lars in our church every Sunday. These men understood so much it’s amazing.
The law, written by Bastiat is a good read

Syed and Madeline, thank you both for an interesting and focussed discussion - and for bring out so clearly the relevance of Bastiat's ideas to BREXIT and the Covid lockdown.

The reductio ad absurdum is brilliant. I think my appeal to him is his logical reasoning with the purpose of the law, I love all the essays but The Law is beautiful and brilliant. I believe if his principles were applied, "the answer is to restrict the law" were the foundation of society much of the injustice would be reduced and the world would be more peaceful.

I find it interesting that Bastiat is still accepted as 'liberal' by today's standards. Thanks for the discussion!

He’s a classical liberal. Not like the far left liberals today

"Liberal" in the "classical" sense. Free market, small government. Most certainly and absolutely NOT "progressive" as it is today understood.

Well yes, HS2 is another symptom of socialist Shithole UK; remember the MagLev proposal by a private company (UK Ultraspeed) in 2006, the train could go 720km/h in prototype tests and it was quiet as a car, as well as being on an elevated flyover Bridge track rather then on the ground there is no need to have crossovers on roads which stop traffic and make car drovers wait 30 minutes for a train to pass. That private plead for the right to construct a line from across all the major cities was voted out by Parliament in 2007, my argument is private companies should have the right to construct whatever on their own private land.
