The Law: by Frederic Bastiat

- The Law, first published as a pamphlet in June, 1850, is already more than a hundred years old. And because its truths are eternal, it will still be read when another century has passed.
Frederic Bastiat (1801-1850) was a French economist, statesman, and author. He did most of his writing during the years just before- and immediately following - the Revolution of February 1848. This was the period when France was rapidly turning to complete socialism. As a Deputy to the Legislative Assembly, Mr. Bastiat was studying and explaining each socialist fallacy as it appeared. And he explained how socialism must inevitably degenerate into communism. But most of his countrymen chose to ignore his logic.
The Law is here presented again because the same situation exists in America today as in the France of 1848. The same socialist-communist ideas and plans that were then adopted in France are now sweeping America. The explanations and arguments then advanced against socialism by Mr. Bastiat are - word for word - equally valid today. His ideas deserve a serious hearing.
Walter Williams, an economics professor at George Mason University, states:
Many philosophers have made important contributions to the discourse on liberty, Bastiat among them. But Bastiat's greatest contribution is that he took the discourse out of the ivory tower and made ideas on liberty so clear that even the unlettered can understand them and statists cannot obfuscate them. Clarity is crucial to persuading our fellowman of the moral superiority of personal liberty.
I’ve been homeschooled my entire life and this is my “extra reading” this week for my high school U.S. history class taught by my amazing mom. Just a reminder that there are options out there, you don’t have to settle for typical curriculums.
I wish I'd learned this in school. Alas, I went to public school.
Women like you mom, are the Navy Seals of our day.
I hope your continuing your education in such a way. I wish this writing were given to me in high school
This should be required reading in all of our schools and universities. This man is way ahead of his time!!!
Bc govt schools will teach kids that govt school I a form of legal plunder.
It is required in my economics class currently reading 😌

He lived through three revolutions. The guy is basically warning all future kin. We are screwed....
Life liberty and the pursuit of happiness is what the forefathers fought for with their lives. It’s actually what many people have had to do because of tyrants all throughout this long battle each generation goes through. It’s up to us now to stand up for our life, liberty and property because that’s what tyrants are after. They are scum.

Abbie Werner. You're a blessing🙏
Wow thank you
Bastiat said: when plunder becomes a way of life for some group of men living together in a society, they create for themselves, in the course of time, a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it.

Wow, over 150 years old but EXACTLY on point in literal & fundamental meaning today
Wow, it is awesome to see almost 12,000 views on this. It makes me glad to know people are actively interested in some of the Classical Economists. Especially someone as brilliant and influential as Frederic Bastiat.
The question is how can society reverse the effects of free trade capitalism in what occurs as despotism without incorporating a more socialist government to bring about a balance to the economic bubble, obviously there has always been some pattern to what causes insurrections which have in the past led to civil unrest where the authorities of law "act in direct opposition to its own purpose" in a police state mentality or communism the very enemy to which wars in the past were meant to eradicate. (Vietnam) so it would seem that the definition to communism is misdiagnosed.. So what is liberty & freedom within the attitude to a sense of social unrest?
The moment Ive realized that all what we face today was the same 200 years ago simply kill any hope I had in humanity.
You are babbling Wayland. Keep reading Bastiat and all your questions will be answered
The Law is the Bible for how men can live well on earth. Most important writing I ever read.
Thank you for posting this video.
Bastiat's The Law is brilliant and powerful. He establishes and builds on sounds premises, exposing inconsistencies If Law was what it should be - absolutely protecting each person's rights, rather than being used as a weapon to gain power, privilege or property, then voters would have nothing to fear from each other.
"If Law was what it should be - absolutely protecting each person's rights, rather than being used as a weapon to gain power, privilege or property," -- dare i say there would be no need to vote.

Anarcho communist here. I respect my AnCap brother's.
Plus I dig hearing the opposition 👍
We need more people talking and cooperating - at least recognizing the legal plunder.
AnCap here - respect
Ancap here. I don't oppose ancom. I want self-ownerrship for all.
Let's do the An part together and let people self-organize into Com/Cap. We're not opposed.
That is an oxymoron.
1. Not owning things (property or product labor) is not freedom. Someone is saying what you can or cannot have. Therefore, you are owned by a group.
I like how this is like a game show
I thought it was like watching corporate instruction videos... Examining your rights the workplace lol
I'm probably the only one who likes the music lmao. Seems like a good introduction for each roast.
Abolish laws of legal plunder that benefit one person at the expense of another, doing what the citizen himself cannot do without commiting a crime...
Includes social security

@@Fabric_Hater Ok. Anyway, do you think it should be abolished?
Social security (S.S.) also the abbreviation of Schutzstaffel (German: “Protective Echelon”) the black-uniformed elite corps and self-described “political soldiers” of the Nazi Party.
@@arrrseeingeye I didn't know, and of course. I don't support social security

Because gov decides the curriculum
The part at 15:03 is incredibly relevant. Especially now.
This was an exciting listen!
This is great for my homeschooling group.
Here in December 2019. Founded the Mexicali Chapter of AIER´s Bastiat Society in September 2019. First chapter in Mexico.
Edit missed a re-take at 39:53, Narrator says "Would not a condition of justice be sufficient to cause the greatest efforts towards progress?" twice.
Same at 1:21:09, "This mass... by Robespierre" is spoken twice.
Simply an awesome piece of scholarship !
The game show music is VERY distracting... and that's all I got to say about that.

WHY IS THERE MUSIC????
Right?
Because most people intellectually are like little kids and get bored by just listening to lectures or spoken word without some kind of audio-visual stimulation
@@IslamophobiaWatch I think the music is just showing a transition to the next chapter or section...
