Honestly it is a good style for this build whereas most new mojang builds have this style of simplicity but shove in all the new blocks and it doesn't look right and all the older blocks are built in a way that just os weird. Wish they brought these books back they were great:)
I like the build, it's reminiscent of the early days of Minecraft where we're only offered by a decent amount of building blocks compared to what we have now. The structures outside the barracks in the yard were ornamental representations of straw training dummies traditionally used to practice technique in preparation for wartime, traditionally, there would be a circle where the sand would go for sparring, leaving cobbled granite rocks for the technique area. The variation in flooring was to lessen the blow for soldiers in training, if the lord they served was wealthy enough, though often this would just be substituted by packed mud, because it was cheaper.
I like that you try to showcase when you build, a lot of creators just cut to when they are done or just don’t show gameplay, as much anymore, maybe you can do even more of that?
I actually have used this book many times in my dad and I's mc world for our castle, obvi not these exact buildings but i skimmed through for inspiration since i don't really know what buildings were in a medieval town. this book slaps and i hope they remaster it at some point
At 4:30; those are NOT EMBRASURES. They are BATTLEMENTS or CRENELLATIONS which are comprised of the raised barriers called Merlons and the spaces between them called Crenels. Embrasures are an example of a hole in a solid wall for a soldier to shoot through. An arrowslit is a type of embrasure. To be even more clear, the definition even shown on-screen says specifically that an embrasure is a SMALL opening that is splayed on the inside. Battlements are not small nor splayed on the inside. There is one instance in which crenels were later called embrasures when used for cannon fire, but in the context of a medieval castle, this is not the case.

I love doing builds like these in survival. My goal never is getting better gear, going to the end, or having some mob farm. It's just building stuff like my villager prison camp where i conduct experiments. Like what would happen if i unleash a zombie in a room full of villagers or what happens if i make a villager ride a minecart into lava. I've learned a lot. Sadly that hardcore world came to an end after a zombie outbreak.
I think maybe the building times in the book are accounting for you creating these builds in survival, which involves limited resources and inventory space, having to do things like smelt stone to make stone bricks, craft stone brick stairs and fences and torches, farm trees for wood, on top of building these structures without flight or fall damage immunity. Just a guess, though.
Would love to see someone do these builds in a like.. modernization utilizing all the new blocks and materials cuz like 2016 was the same year 1.9 came out, and it's now almost been a decade since then now that we're more than halfway through 2024
You know I could actually see a way to improve these builds in terms of functionality and looks but other then that it holds up well in modern Minecraft
I love simpler builds like these. You can make so much more detailed and intricate stuff nowadays but it’s personally not as appealing to me as the simpler block palettes and shapes
A lot of people forget but like 1/5 or more of the structure is going to be underground both for stability and to prevent siegers from digging underneath...though Minecraft doesn't really have issues with that.
OK, since you mentioned build time on the turret, I think it was called, given the only way it could take Mojang a long time to a build the turrets, is cause they were counting survival mode and included all four turrets. (And excluding resource collection, maybe including time to reach a corner)
Can you make a complete tutorial of how to build the castle keep exactly like it is in the book? I have this book, but its super hard to read and copy into my world.
"It doesn't have inverted stairs for the roof, which is annoying" It looks better without the second layer of inverted stairs making it comically thick.
Honestly, their design is not bad. It feels grounded and real while also being detailed. It definitely encapsulates medieval architecture pretty well.

Castles like lighthouses benefit from less is more.
Towerhouses were the most common castle in Ireland due to how easy they are to build.
