I Auditioned for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater New York

  • What does it take to make it as a dancer in New York? I have no idea. I’ve never done ballet, I prefer jazz hands to leaps, and I’m more uncoordinated than most. Regardless, I decided to find out. So I auditioned for Alvin Ailey, one of the most prestigious dance companies in New York. It wasn’t pretty.

I’m just gonna let all of you worried people know that this was obviously staged. All these kids go to the Ailey School, the panel is all Ailey School instructors, which is different from the company. It’s also obvious because all the dancers are in standard dress code, and you don’t go into auditions wearing what everyone else is. The actual company audition would have been longer and cuts would have been made throughout the audition. Just to clarify for those of you who aren’t in the dance world all like that and are upset.

That does make me feel somewhat better. I'm more of a Russian ballet fan so I'm not really familiar with Ailey as a company.

Some auditions are strict about what you have to wear. But they wouldn’t have focused on her at all if it was a real audition.

simplystreeptacular it’s actually not a ballet school or company, it’s a modern and contemporary based school and company. It was found by a black American, and was the first originally all black company to receive the funding that they did. They’re extremely important to everyone in the Dance community even to the classic schools of ballet

I agree, this is disrespectful not just to the girls that were there but to the company and to the dance profession in general. They turned it into a joke. I guess this is advertising for Alvin Ailey, but even so idk why they would agree to this.

As a professional dancer who’s been in several ballet and modern companies across Canada and America, I don’t find this disrespectful at all. These girls aren’t even auditioning it was all staged, these girls are from the summer intensive. It doesn’t make a joke out of dancing, and i was actually happy to see that this company was even shown in mainstream media, as it is a modern based school and company.
Not everyone gets to make a career in dance and I’m very fortunate to be able to do that and I’ve worked very hard to have this opportunity. But to me, dance is for everyone and anyone, I think it’s amazing when people of all styles and training lengths get to participate in classes, or watch or ask questions, get to experience this beautiful thing that I do every day. It warms my heart

Feels like a copy of Lucy For Hire. But Lucy really tries and doesn't giggle and put herself down. Also, Lucy is self aware and reflective / positive about the experience.
Plus, it's disrespectful if this is an actual audition because many of these dancers have worked years to audition for Alvin Ailey, and it's distracting and un-motivating to have someone laughing in the back.
Would have been cool to see her take a class at Alvin Ailey, or meet with the dancers to learn what it's like, or go to a mock audition, or bonus part of the audition, or a kids audition... I dunno, a different version of this would be better.

This was not a real audition! It's clear that it was specifically pre-arranged as part of this woman's video series. I mean, there is obviously a cameraperson weaving among the dancers, and the panel is "in" on it! (The real dancers are, as well--you can see them smiling at her jokes.) Whether or not you like this sort of "fish-out-of-water" thing, please be assured that the real dancers were not compromised or "held back" in any way--let me repeat, this was not a real audition!

I see many on here can't tell the difference from real life to a satirical comedic presentation.
The purpose of the video is to show the hard work needed and years of training needed to even attempt auditioning. This IS NOT an audition for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, But rather a mock audition for The Ailey School. . Being that I am an Alumni of The Ailey School/ Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, I could tell the difference. The two Black Americans at the table are, Tracy Inman who is the Director of the school, and Freddie Moore who is an instructor and also director of the Certificate program.
This mock audition, was all in fun, but at the same time, was to show the difficulty in executing movement without having formal training. I thought it was cute and funny.
Have a sense of humor geesh, and stop being so hypersensitive. Especially when the majority commenting, have no direct ties to the Ailey establishment.

Research on dance etiquette, and about dance auditions in general, could have been done before hand if she really wanted to truly be prepared and to treat this as an actual audition. There are tons of audition videos out there in the internet to observe, but I suppose this was just an "experiment." Congrats to the ladies in the video though. I think they handled the experience and showed their technical abilities very well.

This was such a bad idea. I agree with other commenters. Simply disrespectful and shaming to ask the lady to even do this with no experience whatsoever. Dancers spend years of hard work just to get to the point to audition for a school like Alvin Ailey. I'd know because I'm a graduate of the school. This video documentary is a complete farce. Of course it would be hard for anyone to get a job when they are completely and utterly unqualified.

nataraja87 it’s not that serious, these girls are from the summer intensive. As a professional dancer in several modern companies it warms my hearts when schools and companies like this are featured in mainstream media. It’s already hard enough to make dance a respected art from, let alone when there’s people like you restricting people from participating.
Yes I’ve spent many years training to get to where I am but I think everyone is allowed to have the experience of dancing next to me an other company members, that’s why there’s things like outreach and open classes.
Keep in mind, you dislike this, but the company also agreed to it. And I’m sure you dont dislike it enough to pass up an opportunity to dance with them

    • @nataraja87

@@chloesandrelli7337 It IS that serious. Ask any dancer who's gone through the process how serious it is for them. Don't tell me and others who've gone through that process that it's not serious. I've gone through the summer intensive audition process many times. It's serious. I'm in no way restricting her from dancing. Where do I ever say that? I'm simply saying this process is an embarrassment to the artform and to the many dancers who find this process important for where they want to go. One would very much know that they'd need at least a couple years of training to get accepted to a program like this. One would not show up to a Juilliard music audition having never played a musical instrument and expect to get through. It's simply common sense, and courteous and considerate to the people judging you and to your fellow musicians and dancers auditioning along with you. The woman could have certainly taken those outreach and open classes you're talking about but I'm guessing she didn't since she didn't mention doing any of that before the audition. You talk about respect. Well it starts the moment you walk through those doors.

It takes people a life time, years, to learn that kind of thing. Even so, this totally isnt real. A real audition would move way to fast and be way to technical in terms of terminology for you to even know what's going on. You wouldn't talk during the combinations. True, I would have liked it better if she tried a beginner ballet class, but the good shown here was that you just can't come in off the street to try and audition for a professional dance company without proper basic training behind you.

The "audition" clip she did in a different segment for the musical Beautiful, while unrealistic, was at least amusing- and she can hold a note. This on the other hand was too painful to watch. Yes, I know it's supposed to be light-hearted, but it was just ridiculous & kinda not cool...the only positive is that--perhaps--it glaringly illustrates how intense, serious, and dedicated real dance students are.

  • @arrowchild
    @arrowchild 5 років тому

I understand that this might, (hopefully?), be staged, but why on earth not just have her take a class? Taking a professional dance class would have been lighthearted and equally 'comedic.' Having her participate in a group audition is just cringe worthy, not because she isn't a professional dancer, but because she is clearly distracting the dancers who are, (supposedly?), actually auditioning.

It generally takes 10 years of training to become a real dancer. Cute video, but you showed disrespect to Alvin Ailey and the art form. You had a nice retire’ & picked up on alignment and concepts quite well. I saw some raw potential!

For not having experience, her dancing wasn't that bad. But she ruined it by not taking it seriously.

  • @elenaland8015

Bad taste ! I get why it could be seen as funny but as someone that’s spent time sweating in a dance studio and getting contracts and doing shows 7 days a week ....we prep so much for auditions so to have someone who doesn’t take it seriously would be really annoying when you have limited time to learn a section of choreography
Saying that ,a part of me was laughing as that moment you find yourself totally mucking up when blocking a section with the choreographer is something any true dancer can relate to as after yrs of contracts as so attending auditions ,no dancer nails a routine every time !

  • @lilycoombs1385

Watching this I got annoyed. It was obvious that she wasn't actually trying. She talked through the whole things and that is extremely annoying as a dancer. As someone who loves ballet and isn't that good, I like concentration. If I were there it would've taken all of me not to yell at her.

The woman, particularly the Asian and sort of black woman and the white woman right next to the unqualified woman was probably terrified that the unqualified woman was going to bump into them and make them fall. If I was either of them she would've caught my hands after the audition....

Zecora of course I'm not a dancer! I'm a swimmer and there have been idiots that made me false start, but in the end life goes on. Dance career doesn't work out for you or you got distracted over an idiot then you obviously aren't trained enough to focus.

Dancers are actual athletes. This was meant to be silly. If this were real life, she would have gotten chopped immediately and had her feelings hurt. This was just like the Conan skit.

I don’t usually get mad, but this video has me really fuming. She was so disrespectful to the dancers and to the instructors. The woman talked when she shouldn’t have and kept laughing throughout the combinations. Before the audition she should have at least done some research, especially on ballet etiquette. She truly had no tact. Also at least put in the effort beforehand to put your hair in a bun and put on a leotard and tights. It was just sad and angering to watch.

This is so disrespectful to the company and the dancers. I agree that the series is a good concept and this woman is very brave but an Alvin Ailey audition!? Not the right place or the right time whatsoever. I’m sure this wasn’t the intention of the video but it just made a mockery of the whole experience and profession.

  • @gabriellemelendez4763

This is very disrespectful towards the girls auditioning and to the dance profession itself. Just think that you could’ve gotten in a girls way or distracted a girl while dancing and therefore they could’ve failed the audition. I truly do hope this was staged.

This vid was annoying but definitely very fake. There's no way the judges would've been so involved or accepting of her behavior/clothing at a real audition. SO i doubt other ballerinas were harmed in the making of this vid lol
