The kroot collector is my absolute favourite. Not only is it obviously painted marvelously, but I just love the story it tells! Such a unique and interesting concept!
@@AuroraDE95 thanks! it's probably my favourite mini to this day. Kroot offer so much fun opportunities - I still have two funny dioramas from back in the day that I should really finish...

this is one of my favourite painting related vids on youtube, to see the progression and style changes was really informative, a video diary of painting a golden demon would be amazing
I remember being super impressed with those beastmen back when I saw them. The paint job is great, but what really made me think "wow" was how great the sculpts were. I've mucked around with green stuff a fair bit and I can't imagine sculpting detailed anatomy like that 5 times over and having it look consistent across the entire squad.

Amazing video. Thanks so much. I get a huge amount of value from listening to an artist actually talking about what went into their work., Inspirations and what they think about it now. Your early style reminds me of the Italian painting technique sfumato that was used by the greatest painters!
I'd have to say your krieg piece is my favourite. I actually love both the horse color and the dust aswell, both was very important for drawing me in! Theoden is really nice aswell, the brightness on the top of his forehead and hair really make me feel the light🙂 Fantastic pieces!
I really really like the design of the Nurgle Marine. I saw your Nurgle Marine in a magazine back in 2005, still remember it today, what struck me at the time is the simplicity of the cold "steel" grey for nurgle, that was a great choice, also it was very pragmatic, not over the top, it feels very realistic. It's practical, not over the top nurgle, but negligent nurgle, slow decay, abandoned
the back fabric at 23:35 or so is amazing. prolly the best fabric paint ive seen because it no longer looks like a plastic model that was painted, it looks more akin to a screenshot from a videogame that has proper cloth and light simulation. it almost detracts from the rest of the model because its somehow photorealistic looking which makes it kinda contrast against the rest for being "too good".

Thanks for the great video it was awesome to hear you talk about what you where thinking at the time and to see how your style for competition changed over time. Would love to see for videos on your conversions and sculptures
The jump in quality of painting across all levels of the hobby thanks to UA-cam blows my mind. I consider myself an OK painter (after 20 years on and off 🤣) and whilst your work from the mid 2000's was exceptional at the time that's about the level I'm at now, like a lot of other people, whereas you are actual leagues ahead putting out some incredible work.
Not through the whole video yet but 1) love the idea of self-criticizing your work and 2) respect for the stuff you say around 05:40 and calling it valid, not everyone does that, love that I found your channel some days ago.
That Death Corps of Krieg rider is definitely the pinnacle of what you're showing in this video, love the comp, the figures and the base ! For a honorable mention I would pick the kroot riding the krootox ^^ I remember having seeing it in a White Dwarf mag ^^
While I was watching some other video I had the itch that I know your face and with this video it actually confirms it since I know most of those older models from being displayed in the GW! I remember you giving me some tips for my Youngbloods model I was painting at that time. Great that you are doing well, awesome paint-jobs.

Kroot Jeansstealer! A lot of great points. It's a great idea to comment on your own works, especially from so long ago. Would be nice to see a similar video from other painters. I recently caught myself overusing VGC Dark Blue. Maybe because I paint my Space Wolves with it as a shadow color or maybe because my recent model was Wraithlord with Turquoise armor (and I thought it is a nice shadow color for it). I even did use it as a shadow for my orange colored shirt on Orlock ganger. I did an orange glaze over it, so it won't be as stark, but still... I might be trying to glaze too much. I need to pickup wetblending, but humidity in my room might be too low (paint dries really fast) and I'm terrified of using too much paint. Maybe oil painting would be better, but I lack a lot of colors (not even have a RGB/CMYK colors). Could you nudge Vince and make a video where you each comment on the other person's competition pieces from recent years? You might've done something like this already, but my memory is failing me.
Deathkorp was awesome and those armour parts on the beast were amazing but for me those beastmen were the best! You didnt even mention the metallics on the axes which are sick..! You re just awesome dude, thnx for the inspiration!
Top video as always man, really helpful to see how you progressed as an artist, it gives us all hope. I personally really liked the Theoden paint job :)
watching this video certainly was a humbling experience. It's really funny having a look at a model and only thinking "wauw this is amazing". And then afterwards finding out about all these things you didn't see or understand beforehand. When you critiqued Arwen's face I was shocked. But then hearing the arguments I understood what could be changed.
Amazing stuff. Although it's weird to see these models today again, remembering seeing and marveling at them on the pages of White Dwarf so many years ago. It's like travelling back in time to the age of 5th edition 50k.
The beastmen group reminds me of the feel you get from looking at the muscle definition you get on renaissance marble sculptures, the whole effect of the global light and stuff. I don’t know if it was intentional, cause I don’t know anything about professional painting but I really like the sort of focused, direct approach it has to the way the minis are standing. Thanks Trov! just like hearing you talk about the pieces - I don't feel the need for more criticism per se; just walking us through what you perceive in the piece is very interesting. It would be fun to finish with one of your "more creative" pieces in contrast, to show what would probably not be "golden demon material" but you are yet totally proud of and happy to talk about. I don't recall if you have commented other pieces previously - would you mind pointing me to existing videos if you have? Thanks again for the video and have a nice week-end! EDIT: Oh, and for my favorite piece, I'd probably have to go with your Theoden (in part because I can't really care for W40K lore in general), though the Beastmen I also like a lot.
I know you told ok a little flack on the Eavy Metal group when you were mentioning this video, but honestly I think it was fantastic. I watched the whole thing despite the length, and enjoyed the heck out of the retrospective thoughts you had about your work.
I still have the White Dwarf Copy where they highlighted the B'elakor Mini. Really blew my mind back then. Thanks YT Algorithm for bringing me here! Big Ups!
This video is super inspiring. I'll definitely look at my own minis more critically from now on. I'm keen to enter competitions but the bar is so high these days, guess I just have to practice more!
Awesome video. Even if you didn't critique as much, hearing you talk about it was great as it pointed out details I didn't even notice. My favorite is the Kroot with his sweet Knarloc friend. To your point about having trouble critiquing your own work, have you ever considered doing a video with some of your peers where your take a look at each other's older pieces? It would be fascinating to see what he has to say about these compared to what you said, and it would be cool to see you a similar format with his stuff.

Scan and print via 3d printer,?

I don't recall if you have commented other pieces previously - would you mind pointing me to existing videos if you have?
Thanks again for the video and have a nice week-end!
EDIT: Oh, and for my favorite piece, I'd probably have to go with your Theoden (in part because I can't really care for W40K lore in general), though the Beastmen I also like a lot.
You're a newbie still, I had a GD finalist in '93. My first and only ever entry 😂
93, i remember that year. It was sometime between 92 and 94 i believe. Long time go!
@@marahadjan indeed, feels like another lifetime.
dafuk dude. so critical of your old work. was still amazing.
The last one is so clean. I dont think its boring at all. It tells a story and its a lot more dynamic than just simple miniatures.
Oh boy, I love that Bretonnian knight!
I know you told ok a little flack on the Eavy Metal group when you were mentioning this video, but honestly I think it was fantastic. I watched the whole thing despite the length, and enjoyed the heck out of the retrospective thoughts you had about your work.
Haters gonna hate - honestly, the people that complained probably didn't even watch the video ;)
The Bretonnian Knight and Theodon are probably my two favorites of the bunch. The Krieg one up there for sure!
I still have the White Dwarf Copy where they highlighted the B'elakor Mini. Really blew my mind back then. Thanks YT Algorithm for bringing me here! Big Ups!
I love the Kroot Collector. Its so well done, glad it won gold.
Love to see you doing a series re-imagining your early works
This video is super inspiring. I'll definitely look at my own minis more critically from now on. I'm keen to enter competitions but the bar is so high these days, guess I just have to practice more!
Congrats on the past awards, even more for being able to call out your own flaws and the knowledge to fix it.
You forgot the brown on the Cadian Troopers shorts :P Amazing work man.
The Theoden is amazing, really beautiful!
For real! Just look at the color transition on the bottom scale male skirt. This shit is a whole nother level.
You talk down on your older stuff. Regardless, that was prime miniature painting for back then. Fantastic! I'm glad I watched this video.
Great work! Amazing sculpting and freehand. Great nmm. Love the Bret and the last one the most.
So many great models. So much talent!
I really appreciated seeing this collection. It's very interesting and cool to see.
14:23 The back of the Wings looks incredible
Fantastic video! Great to see your journey and lots of interesting and useful knowledge passed on! 👌🏼
Great quality video both in editing and video quality and information! Really like the videos focused on the theory of painting,
The Kroot was my favorite. Great job!
Amazing work. You deserved every single award. Outstanding stuff.
thanks!
