99% of the videos I watch are in english while I'm brazilian, so it's quite weird to have brazilian portuguese as default audio track just because I like my UI to be in brazilian portuguese. It would be great for it to default to the original language and make people aware that there is an audio track for their language as an option if needed.
Correction in this specific video: The title in brazilian portuguese doesn't really make sense. It shows as "Novos Esquemas a serem Cuidados em 2023", and the correct way would be "Novos golpes para se atentar em 2023".
A good rule of thumb that I always use is to edit:NEVER ( was: even ) click an email link. If my bank charge card or whatever sends me an email saying I need to to log in and fix some problem, I will just log into that location using the normal means instead of using the email link. If it's a real message I'll be able to see it from their normal.
that's smart but just keep in mind that there is another way you may fall for the scam. there is still a risk that even if you don't use the link in the email, the email itself is malicious something like a drive-by-attack which cause your browser to secretly download and execute malware code on your machine and if the malware is a keylogger you may end up giving you bank information to the hacker even if you use the real website for your bank. the best thing to do is to verify that the email is from the Bank first before opening it

Drive by attack were common when most people were using Internet Explorer for internet and Outlook (or Outlook Express) for email. These days with the variety of web browsers and email web clients being used, it's a very difficult attack vector to exploit. And even if an exploit was discovered, most big email sites (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, etc.) will have probably already patched it (or at least sanitized messages) unless it's the newest 0-day.

I keep seeing on the news that a lot of elderly / women are getting scammed of their life savings through dating scamms, fake cryptocurrency, etc. Don't send money to anyone you don't know!
The kidnap scam happened to my family they called from a blocked number and thankfully we were able to make sure that the person they claimed to have kidnapped was actually safe, make sure to verify and don't accept calls from unknown numbers
For the virtual kidnapping one, the best thing is you can either ask them question about the family member whose answer you would know while the scammer would never know or you can just call the *real* family member to check if they are ok
Personally we have discussed this with wife and we have a passphrase that we will use in case of distress/under duress and another for ''proof of life'' scenarios. Sad to say that we have to plan for this sort of scenarios. But its the unfortunate reality we are currently living in.

Yeah most of these aren't actually clever at all. It's just people are becoming more gullible as "critical thinking skills" are pushed further and further down in priority for education systems.
I got scammed with those UA-cam comment scams a while back from watching a UA-cam video. They are so annoying those types of scams. I trust you ThioJoe. I really love the fact that you warn us with these things. It really helps. Your videos are amazing.

Scammers are F-ing relentless. I just say that one of the best ways to stay safe is not answer your phone at all. If it is important they will leave a message you can listen to. Then decide if you want to call them back. That includes family.
Thank you.sir..I was scam and just like you said a scammer ask me about code he said you got a code cane you give it to me..and sometimes. Facebook will see that some one is trying to access my Face book account. Then they would send me a code and tell me not to share it with any one.
I'm afraid of the time when computer security becomes a thing that everybody takes seriously, which means that hackers will be working way harder to attack people and users will have to work way harder to protect themselves. Also i'm really scared of zero click attacks
It's supposed to be that way but most people tend to be complacent in thinking whatever they buy or use will inherently take care all of those problems for you.
People have been complacent on cyber security since the dawn of the internet. Just look at Kevin Mitnick, a prolific hacker in the 80s and 90s, who widely used social engineering as an attack vector. Though security has gotten better, it's mainly because of technologies such as password managers and 2FA, not people being less complacent.
I got a phone call from a person saying they were from publishers clearing house. He gave me a code and the number to call which I did and I ended up talking to two different people telling me that I won $7000 a week and a new BMW. Since I’ve been scammed before, I listened and was not excited. At the end they told me I had to go to CVS or Walgreens and get a special card. That’s when I knew it was a scam.
I get Pig Butchering attemps so often i've pratically become numb to them. One time i played along, pretending to be the person they were looking for, and i actually got them to admit to the scam. other times, once i realize it's one of them, all i have to do is mention "Scam" to them, and they'll shut up.
Thank you for this video. I almost got scammed about two weeks ago but luckily, it didn't happen. What had happened was I had bought a basic printer online. I had trouble connecting the wireless printer to my laptop. So I googled the Canon website looking for some troubleshooting help so that I could figure out what went wrong. So I clicked on a link that looked like Canon's link but it wasn't. Then this window popped up and it said call tech support for installation help. So I call the number and this person who claimed to be a technician answers the phone offering to install the printer. So then he says to me that I would have to allow him to log into my computer remotely to fix the problem. So I was like 🤔 if I allow you into my computer you will have access to all of my private information. Uh...I don't feel comfortable doing that. Oh and by the way, is this going to cost me any money? He said yes there is an installation fee of $90.00. I said "oh hell no, I only paid $40.00 for this printer. No thank you, click and I hung up. I don't know if this guy was legitimate or an actual scammer. In any event, I was not allowing anyone to have remote access into my laptop and you shouldn't either!
I'm going to come back to this because I'm trying not to get distracted but I just wanted to say I got scammed last year and it cost me my livelihood and hugely impacted my trust issues (which were already pretty bad to begin with). There is a twist to the PayPal scam to watch out for. Don't call the phone number in the email for more information. The phone number is for the scammer, not PayPal and it will turn into a refund scam. How they sneak this into a legit PayPal email is that there is a "seller comment" section in the invoice. I called PayPal using a legit phone number, not the one in the email, and they confirmed it is a legit PayPal email but that any "seller" can issue an invoice to anyone.
Crazy how scammers just keep getting better at scamming and their scams continue to become more sophisticated. Now so many people are becoming more vulnerable to scams
India needs some Columbine with a side of Timothy McVeigh / Ramzi Yousef 'activities' across their country. Most of the scam call centers in India are in buildings that have poor build quality and few emergency exits. A truck b0mb with 750 - 1,000 lb of EPX-1 and TATP parked up against one of these scam call center buildings would be sufficient to topple the building. PS as a side note, NONE of these buildings are guarded by strong security measures.

Good way to tell if there's an transaction in progress at Walmart is the light on top of the self checkout. If it's green, that means that there's no transaction in progress. If it's off, that means that there's a transaction in progress.
i got a series of those "grandpa calls " - my grandson was about 3 years old -- a while back and I had a lot of fun giving them all sorts of fun answers. Like -"You deserve to be in jail", Call your sister as she is a millionaire and can pay (she is 1year old) . etc. LOL

Walmart and Krogers have already tackled this self checkout part. I can't say for sure every store but the ones in my area have screens that show up after every checkout saying that that register is open. Also, there is a time limit on transactions that only lasts like 30 seconds before it brings up a prompt asking if you want to continue
Somebody told me never to use to self checker because if they made a mistake you might end up going to court. They might accuse you of stealing but if the cashier check you out such a thing cannot happen.

I got scam on line. It's on line investment, now they are threatening that police will pick me up and take me to court because I owe them money unless I pay insurance fee and late fee.
As for one time password stealing, it's as simple as this: never give anyone a 2 factor authentication code that you receive (or one that shows up in an app you did set up) unless you yourself login somewhere where it is asking for one that is either send to you or shows up in an app you did set up
Don't think this won't happen to you! That first scam was attempted on me, except it was that my niece was arrested and needed money and didn't want her mother to know. They knew a few facts about her- her name and where she lived- so it was creepy AF. They didn't spoof her voice, so I was suspicious (after the initial "freak out"). Luckily, I figured it out, called my niece and realized it was a scam. Thanks for this video, will share!
The kidnap scam was actually extremely poular in asia around 2010's. It happened to almost everyone and because of that scam, a ton of civilians lost literally hundreds of thousands of dollars. The scam were targeted on the poor, and it happened to someone i was close to. She wasn't able to call her son while he was working to confirm that he was okay, but her son was working and wasn't able to pick up the phone, so she lost around $200 USD. It sucked but she was one of the lucky ones. Someone lost around $20K USD from that scam.
Virtual Kidnapping is quite common scam over here in Brazil. And that's without any spoofing, just by random call to pretende as a familiar is in despair call from random number and then the "kidnapper" takes in the call
My 92 year old mum got one of those,, text through whattap saying it was me, that i needed money as id lost my phone!!! She said she thought about it,, and worked out it could not be right..... yay,,, she's learning 😀
I just got scammed by someone claiming to be with my bank. They used the same number as my banks customer service line. I got played hard. I called the actual banks customer service and they said it should take 10 business days for it to resolve. They took all of my money (which thankfully wasn’t much)
Oh man, gotta call last year about my daughter in a car accident. ran out a store, jump in my car.. And the conversation was kind of BS as i asked . had me worked up, started questioning.. Then doubting as I headed home instead of the bank as he wanted me to... and loaded up. And told him I'd meet him, give him all the money he wanted in person.... That conversation situation petered out.. But I was so looking forward to meeting the 2 people on the phone. God Bless this Country, laws we have.. Most of the time if someone's internet security gets compromised, it's because of there own carelessness. It's good that someone is educating about this stuff, so that they can stay aware and careful
well you can't blame most people for falling for scams or hackers, since those scammers/ hackers are people that spent most of their life learning social engineering and perfecting their craft, while the victims are usually people that are busy doing jobs that aren't related to IT. it's only the fault of the victim if such a victim was someone who works in IT fields or a nerd who really knows a lot about IT
In a way yes. Part of it most consumer modems etc are made without security being a main factor if a factor at all. And most people are not tech savvy enough to do anything to protect themselves like an IT pro can. Just the basic changing your router default name and password goes a long way. But even that is beyond the reach of some people.
Hi ..I moved last year and in trying to get estimates I ran into alot of fake /scammers...tell you they don't need to see your property..just do truck size etc .and they want deposit up front to set up for the move...then take money and there not real..hear it's big..I was super picky and wouldn't deal with anyone who didn't come look and have a company I could look up and do reviews etc..and I didn't give up front money..
Just hang up the call without saying anything as if the connection were lost and, if they call back, don't answer. Use other communication methods to contact your "affected family member".
There is a scam out there where they ask you to download an authenticar application that requires your user ID and password. They use that to open an account for you on a video service website. They send you your user ID and password and tell you it is paid for. When you login They charge you $39.95. The lady on the customer service number sounded from India but they tell you they are in Florida.
Got a text from what seemed to be my Real Estate broker (I'm a Realtor) The text header showed my Broker's name. Broker: "Do you have a moment to chat?" I'm thinking, oh crap I must have really screwed up if my Broker is reaching out to me! Me: "Sure." Broker: "Will you urgently go to he store and pick me up some gift cards?" I blocked the number after that. The scammer had texted all 70 plus Realtors that we're under the brokers license!

Last year I fell for the one time password thing. Lost 3k for some stupid golden chain, but then after phoning the store, a convenience store (because they also tried getting gift cards) nearby AND the cops AAAAND filing a fraud report, I got my money back. The money was not lost. The chain was not purchased with my money. Got a call some days after from an angry man, he probably got caught red-handed :)
Good practice is whenever you get a call from a bank etc is to make the excuse there's someone at the door, can I call back? Then you call your actual bank to see if it was a legit call. Same goes for bank emails. Call your branch to see if legit before opening. Once you open on your phone, you're vulnerable.
I have gotten so many phone calls regarding the student loan forgiveness. I have told them either I don't believe in them and hang up or have told them I have already applied for the forgiveness process, and they hang up on me. I get these calls almost daily. Another comment is when I tell them I am 100% disabled, and they say that they can't help me. Dead tale sign they are scammers.

Thanks to people like Joe who help inform the public of these scams. What is not good is that governments and police forces don't seem to be doing all that much to help. They may churn out some helpful information, but you don't see many reports of prosecutions of these criminals or the mass media just finds it boring, or something.
Africa doesnt allow any other country to interfere in their country or it could start a war and as africa has no oil or resources anyone wants they dont find the efforts worth their efforts. Also mind they still receive the taxes on money sent across seas so its a win for the US government as well.

I got a scam message this morning from one of my FB friends, saying "she" had been locked out of "her" account and needed my help to get back in. "She" said all I had to do was check my email for a code, and then give "her" the code. I did, but the email said it was a code to reset MY FB. "She" said yeah, but it was for "her" FB. I not only noped out, but blocked "her" on FB and deleted the email.

My favorite scam is the simple "hello text message". Scammers simply send a "hello" or "Is this John" or "Hey how was your day?" kind of message. They want you to read the message and respond so that they know you have a valid phone number to send you all kinds of spam.
Do not answer phone unless you know the number that is calling you. Delete emails that, like the phone, from sources you do not know. Do not chat with people online. Do not join groups online, do not date online. It is very difficult for someone to scam you without your help. Don't help them.

Other than the comment scams, UA-cam got some Elon Musk Tesla X ads, about Elon gifting some kind of currency or investing when it's just footage of Elon Musk with Marques Brownley dubbed in russian or the Livestreams in hijacked accounts or those Beast Promo ads you'd find in your recommended page. It's a huge mess

Have heard you of the one we're they find a person on reality UA-cam, put their picture up and tell people they won a prize. Hoping you think it is the people. So they want you to pay for the shipping and handling on the prize. This is through text the whole time. The whole time wanting you to buy cards and give them the numbers. They just keep asking for more and more shipping since you won an 8,000 dollars prize. I have no idea how much they can scam people out of since you will never get the prize. Be aware🤨👎

The kidnap scam sounds like a bit of an update on a very old scam. It's always best to never answer calls from unknown numbers, too.

I get Pig Butchering attemps so often i've pratically become numb to them. One time i played along, pretending to be the person they were looking for, and i actually got them to admit to the scam.
other times, once i realize it's one of them, all i have to do is mention "Scam" to them, and they'll shut up.

Thank you for this video. I almost got scammed about two weeks ago but luckily, it didn't happen. What had happened was I had bought a basic printer online. I had trouble connecting the wireless printer to my laptop. So I googled the Canon website looking for some troubleshooting help so that I could figure out what went wrong. So I clicked on a link that looked like Canon's link but it wasn't. Then this window popped up and it said call tech support for installation help. So I call the number and this person who claimed to be a technician answers the phone offering to install the printer. So then he says to me that I would have to allow him to log into my computer remotely to fix the problem. So I was like 🤔 if I allow you into my computer you will have access to all of my private information. Uh...I don't feel comfortable doing that. Oh and by the way, is this going to cost me any money? He said yes there is an installation fee of $90.00. I said "oh hell no, I only paid $40.00 for this printer. No thank you, click and I hung up.
I don't know if this guy was legitimate or an actual scammer. In any event, I was not allowing anyone to have remote access into my laptop and you shouldn't either!

I'm going to come back to this because I'm trying not to get distracted but I just wanted to say I got scammed last year and it cost me my livelihood and hugely impacted my trust issues (which were already pretty bad to begin with). There is a twist to the PayPal scam to watch out for. Don't call the phone number in the email for more information. The phone number is for the scammer, not PayPal and it will turn into a refund scam. How they sneak this into a legit PayPal email is that there is a "seller comment" section in the invoice.
I called PayPal using a legit phone number, not the one in the email, and they confirmed it is a legit PayPal email but that any "seller" can issue an invoice to anyone.
Crazy how scammers just keep getting better at scamming and their scams continue to become more sophisticated. Now so many people are becoming more vulnerable to scams

Most of the scam call centers in India are in buildings that have poor build quality and few emergency exits.
A truck b0mb with 750 - 1,000 lb of EPX-1 and TATP parked up against one of these scam call center buildings would be sufficient to topple the building.
PS as a side note, NONE of these buildings are guarded by strong security measures.
This is why IG and FB are bad. Openly exposing yourself for a few validation

Good way to tell if there's an transaction in progress at Walmart is the light on top of the self checkout. If it's green, that means that there's no transaction in progress. If it's off, that means that there's a transaction in progress.
i got a series of those "grandpa calls " - my grandson was about 3 years old -- a while back and I had a lot of fun giving them all sorts of fun answers. Like -"You deserve to be in jail", Call your sister as she is a millionaire and can pay (she is 1year old) . etc. LOL

Walmart and Krogers have already tackled this self checkout part. I can't say for sure every store but the ones in my area have screens that show up after every checkout saying that that register is open. Also, there is a time limit on transactions that only lasts like 30 seconds before it brings up a prompt asking if you want to continue
The screen should revert to a blank screen with one message: START SCANNING. If the screen isn't blank, there is a problem.

Somebody told me never to use to self checker because if they made a mistake you might end up going to court. They might accuse you of stealing but if the cashier check you out such a thing cannot happen.
The kidnapping scam is very common in Mexico and has been for at least 15 years

I got scam on line. It's on line investment, now they are threatening that police will pick me up and take me to court because I owe them money unless I pay insurance fee and late fee.

As for one time password stealing, it's as simple as this: never give anyone a 2 factor authentication code that you receive (or one that shows up in an app you did set up) unless you yourself login somewhere where it is asking for one that is either send to you or shows up in an app you did set up

Scam #1 - haha, all my family is dead, good luck pretending someone in my family is kidnapped, that would be an interesting phone call.
Don't think this won't happen to you! That first scam was attempted on me, except it was that my niece was arrested and needed money and didn't want her mother to know. They knew a few facts about her- her name and where she lived- so it was creepy AF. They didn't spoof her voice, so I was suspicious (after the initial "freak out"). Luckily, I figured it out, called my niece and realized it was a scam. Thanks for this video, will share!
The kidnap scam was actually extremely poular in asia around 2010's. It happened to almost everyone and because of that scam, a ton of civilians lost literally hundreds of thousands of dollars. The scam were targeted on the poor, and it happened to someone i was close to. She wasn't able to call her son while he was working to confirm that he was okay, but her son was working and wasn't able to pick up the phone, so she lost around $200 USD. It sucked but she was one of the lucky ones. Someone lost around $20K USD from that scam.

Virtual Kidnapping is quite common scam over here in Brazil. And that's without any spoofing, just by random call to pretende as a familiar is in despair call from random number and then the "kidnapper" takes in the call

I just got scammed by someone claiming to be with my bank. They used the same number as my banks customer service line. I got played hard. I called the actual banks customer service and they said it should take 10 business days for it to resolve. They took all of my money (which thankfully wasn’t much)

Oh man, gotta call last year about my daughter in a car accident. ran out a store, jump in my car.. And the conversation was kind of BS as i asked . had me worked up, started questioning.. Then doubting as I headed home instead of the bank as he wanted me to... and loaded up. And told him I'd meet him, give him all the money he wanted in person.... Most of the time if someone's internet security gets compromised, it's because of there own carelessness.
It's good that someone is educating about this stuff, so that they can stay aware and careful
well you can't blame most people for falling for scams or hackers, since those scammers/ hackers are people that spent most of their life learning social engineering and perfecting their craft, while the victims are usually people that are busy doing jobs that aren't related to IT.
it's only the fault of the victim if such a victim was someone who works in IT fields or a nerd who really knows a lot about IT
In a way yes. Part of it most consumer modems etc are made without security being a main factor if a factor at all. And most people are not tech savvy enough to do anything to protect themselves like an IT pro can. Just the basic changing your router default name and password goes a long way. But even that is beyond the reach of some people.
Hi ..I moved last year and in trying to get estimates I ran into alot of fake /scammers...tell you they don't need to see your property..just do truck size etc .and they want deposit up front to set up for the move...then take money and there not real..hear it's big..I was super picky and wouldn't deal with anyone who didn't come look and have a company I could look up and do reviews etc..and I didn't give up front money..
Just hang up the call without saying anything as if the connection were lost and, if they call back, don't answer. Use other communication methods to contact your "affected family member".
There is a scam out there where they ask you to download an authenticar application that requires your user ID and password. They use that to open an account for you on a video service website. They send you your user ID and password and tell you it is paid for. When you login They charge you $39.95. The lady on the customer service number sounded from India but they tell you they are in Florida.

Got a text from what seemed to be my Real Estate broker (I'm a Realtor) The text header showed my Broker's name. Broker: "Do you have a moment to chat?" I'm thinking, oh crap I must have really screwed up if my Broker is reaching out to me! Me: "Sure." Broker: "Will you urgently go to he store and pick me up some gift cards?" I blocked the number after that. The scammer had texted all 70 plus Realtors that we're under the brokers license!
That's horrific scammers are getting more desperate to go this far
Don't forget about the threatening text message with suspicious website links from random and unknown phone number scam that have started recently.
And also the fake emails impersonating companies like Amazon.

Last year I fell for the one time password thing. Lost 3k for some stupid golden chain, but then after phoning the store, a convenience store (because they also tried getting gift cards) nearby AND the cops AAAAND filing a fraud report, I got my money back. The money was not lost. The chain was not purchased with my money. Got a call some days after from an angry man, he probably got caught red-handed :)
Good practice is whenever you get a call from a bank etc is to make the excuse there's someone at the door, can I call back? Then you call your actual bank to see if it was a legit call. Same goes for bank emails. Call your branch to see if legit before opening. Once you open on your phone, you're vulnerable.

I have gotten so many phone calls regarding the student loan forgiveness. I have told them either I don't believe in them and hang up or have told them I have already applied for the forgiveness process, and they hang up on me. I get these calls almost daily.
Another comment is when I tell them I am 100% disabled, and they say that they can't help me. Dead tale sign they are scammers.
The work he does is so vital the world needs more people like you I just love the podcast so you put up I love hearing these scammers squirm keep up the good work, it takes good hearted individuals the gutts to do this instead. There should be whole government department buildings filled with *ApexDeft* doing stuff like this to protect and serve its own scammed civilians . That would be tax money well spent.

Thanks to people like Joe who help inform the public of these scams. What is not good is that governments and police forces don't seem to be doing all that much to help. They may churn out some helpful information, but you don't see many reports of prosecutions of these criminals or the mass media just finds it boring, or something.
Africa doesnt allow any other country to interfere in their country or it could start a war and as africa has no oil or resources anyone wants they dont find the efforts worth their efforts. Also mind they still receive the taxes on money sent across seas so its a win for the US government as well.

I got a scam message this morning from one of my FB friends, saying "she" had been locked out of "her" account and needed my help to get back in. "She" said all I had to do was check my email for a code, and then give "her" the code. I did, but the email said it was a code to reset MY FB. "She" said yeah, but it was for "her" FB. I not only noped out, but blocked "her" on FB and deleted the email.

My favorite scam is the simple "hello text message". Scammers simply send a "hello" or "Is this John" or "Hey how was your day?" kind of message. They want you to read the message and respond so that they know you have a valid phone number to send you all kinds of spam.

Other than the comment scams, UA-cam got some Elon Musk Tesla X ads, about Elon gifting some kind of currency or investing when it's just footage of Elon Musk with Marques Brownley dubbed in russian or the Livestreams in hijacked accounts or those Beast Promo ads you'd find in your recommended page.

Have heard you of the one we're they find a person on reality UA-cam, put their picture up and tell people they won a prize. Hoping you think it is the people. So they want you to pay for the shipping and handling on the prize. This is through text the whole time. The whole time wanting you to buy cards and give them the numbers. They just keep asking for more and more shipping since you won an 8,000 dollars prize. I have no idea how much they can scam people out of since you will never get the prize. Be aware🤨👎
