Freshwater Softshell Turtle grows and breeds rapidly in tropical climates, making it the most productive and economically attractive species to farm there. These turtles are predominantly aquatic in habits and are rarely seen out of water. The Chinese softshell turtle generally lives in freshwater.
Shell turtles a small to medium-sized turtles. On average, the Chinese softshell turtle can reach a carapace length of around 1 feet and weigh up to 6 kg. The males are generally smaller in size than the females, and the females also have a slightly domed carapace.
Their natural diet comprises, a wide range of aquatic invertebrates, fishes, and vegetation. Captives of this species will eat, canned and fresh fish, canned dog food, raw beef, mice, frogs, and chicken.
These turtles reach sexual maturity sometime between 4 and 6 years of age. Breeding season for the Chinese soft-shelled turtle lasts from March to September.
They mate at the surface or underwater. A male will hold the female's carapace with its forelimbs and may bite at her head, neck, and limbs. Females may retain sperm for almost a year after copulation.
Each spawning pond has an egg-laying site, a 1.5 to 2.5 m2 rectangular platform containing 15 to 25cm deep sand. The females generally lay 8 to 30 eggs in a clutch, and they may lay from 2 to 5 clutches each year.
Eggs are kept in wooden boxes for 1 to 2 days before fertilized eggs are selected. Fertilized eggs are then transferred, to sand beds in the hatchery for incubation. Eggs are arranged in rows with the "white cap" facing upward, spaced at a distance of 1 to 2cm apart, and buried under a 5cm layer of sand.
The eggs generally hatch after an incubation period of about 60 days, which can be longer or shorter depending on temperature. The average hatchling carapace length is about 25 mm, and the width is also about 25 mm. Newly hatched turtles are removed daily from the basin in the incubation site and transferred to the nursery tank.
They choose spots with sandy or mud bottoms, that they can rest among. Rearing turtles is a very profitable industry. Starting to raise turtles can require low startup capital, and you only require a small size of land.
