  • In this video I describe why I wanted to make a new scroll saw table insert and then you see me make one. Hopefully, there is enough information provided so that you could make your own insert if you wanted.
There were a couple of reasons why I wanted to make a new insert:
    1) So that I could cut smaller pieces and not have them fall through the hole in the insert.
    2) I wanted to better support the piece I was cutting.
The new insert could be described as a near zero clearance insert meaning that the blade is very close to the side of the hole in the insert. This makes it possible to cut very small parts while not risking them falling through the hole in the insert. (This will make more sense as you watch the video.)
The other thing the new insert does it provide much better support for the wood (work piece) I am cutting. The new insert has a lot less flex in it (compared to the original insert that came with the saw) and also allows me to cut much closer to the edge of the work piece while still being supported.
I hope this video helps any of those new to scrolling. I consider myself still pretty new to scrolling so as I learn more, I intend to make more videos to share what I've learned.

You're welcome. Since making the zero clearance insert, I only use the saw when it is installed. Thanks for your comment and for watching.

Thanks for the informative video. Well done. The jazz music in the background makes it that much nicer as you are crafting out the insert.

So many of my projects have been finished with errors, and mostly it's because of the plastic insert. Going to try your method out.

Yes, once I made this wooden insert, I stopped using the plastic one. Thanks for your comment and for watching.

The table insert is recessed below the table out of the box. Is that standard for scroll saws? Ive seen no mention at all on the internet about it. Small pieces cut at an angle, seems like an issue. Maybe its just my saw tho. Good video

For low priced scroll saws, I would not be surprised if the insert sits a little lower than the surface of the table. Hopefully, my video shows you how you can make your own insert which of course, you can make level with your table. Thanks for your comment and for watching. Feel free to post here after you have made your own insert to let everyone know how it went.
